Welcome to St. Marks
St. Marks, Florida, is one of the state’s oldest settlements, established as a Spanish fort in 1679 at the confluence of the Wakulla and St. Marks Rivers. It played a key role in trade and defense during Spanish rule and later became significant for the British and Americans.
In 1836, Florida’s first railroad connected St. Marks to Tallahassee, enhancing its role as a shipping port for a period of time. The town is now known for its historic San Marcos de Apalache site and the nearby St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, drawing history and nature enthusiasts alike.
