    Cliff Notes for 2026:

    • Starting at Dorrance (Port Byron, IL) (Arrive @ 6:30AM, Riders Meeting 6:50AM, Roll Out: 7:00AM)
    • Ending at Westbrook (DeWitt, IA)
    • Trails Included: Dorrance, Illiniwek, Sylvan Island, Sunderbruch, Scott Community College, Some trails around Lost Grove Lake, Scott County Park, & Westbrook Park.
    • Duro: rides all trails and all roads/bikepaths to get to those trails. ~100 mi
    • Dirto: rides all the trails skipping road/bikepath tranits. ~ 45mi
    • There will be one large SAG stop at the half-way point (@ Healthy Habits bike shop). Dirto riders and a few volunteers will be assisting with secondary SAG support at the trails but we can't garuantee this for everyone since riders get very spread out over the day. Plan to be mostly self-sufficient throughout the day. There are many convienient stores and water stops along the route.
    • Have an Exit plan. If you happen to have a mechanical or need to bail for other reasons get that sorted in advance. Our small SAG crew can't cover this much territory to give people rides back to their vehicles.
    • Entry fee. Why? With all the regional biking events on/around this date we think it will help boost participation by getting riders to commit to the event/date. And it helps us provide lunch/snacks/drinks to participants.
    • FORC membership is still required to participate (for insurance), but is wrapped into the $45 entry fee ($20 for Duro/Dirto + $25 FORC Membership). Current members only pay the Duro/Dirto entry fee ($20).
    • Parking/Shuttle Logistics: Shuttle vehicles can be left overnight (Fri. to Sat. only) at Westbrook Park in DeWitt at the trailhead parking lot. Vehicle can be parked at Dorrance the full day Saturday (until 10pm) .
    • AND, same as always, ultra rare & highly coveted DURO/DIRTO stickers will be presented to finishers at Westbrook!

  • Spring Trail Conditions

Spring is slowly creeping in but the trails aren't ready for traffic yet. Help keep them in good shape by staying off until they've firmed up. It will still be a few weeks... The exception being Sylvan Island which is usually rideable by early/mid March due to it's fast drying rocky soil.

Local dirt trails are extremely sensitive to rut damage during the spring thaw. Soils are saturated from snow melt and thawing frost resulting in trails with the consistency of pudding. Riding or even walking on trails in this condition can cause severe erosion & rutting issues and will keep them closed longer. Trails dry slower when rutted since they hold pools of water.

Be patient and let the trails thaw and dry out over the next few weeks. Use the improving weather to check out the local paved bike trails and build the fitness so you're ready to shred the trails when they do open. Our trail volunteers thank you in advance!

  • Winter Trail Grooming

For the 25/26 winter season FORC is trialing groomed winter trails for fatbiking and other silent snow sports. We hope to expand the amount of trails groomed in the future if they are well recieved and easy to maintain!

We ask that trail users wishing to enjoy groomed winter singletrack please do so by riding a Fatbike (>3.8" wide tires at 10 psi or lower), gliding on XC Skis, or floating on Snowshoes. Walking on groomed trails in normal footwear or riding them on a normal mountain bike ruins the smooth snow surface and makes the trail very difficult to fatbike/ski.

    Trail Grooming.

    Current Groomed Trail Status

Trails were groomed at 8-10am on 11/30. After checking conditions mid afternoon on 11/30 the groomed trails are still very soft (probably because of the direct sunlight). We're going to wait to open them until Monday morning expecting they will re-freeze overnight.

    Illiniwek

    • The Upper South Loop, South Climb, and South Descent have been groomed for Fatbikes, XC Skis, and Snowshoes. Around 2.5 miles
    • Please use trails in the indicated daily direction or standard direction for climb/descent.
    • The North Trails will not be groomed and are the recommened route for those wanting to get their winter hike on.
    • Use caution traversing the sledding hill at the bottom of the South Descent (i.e. don't get taken out by a sled).

    Scott County Park

    • South and North Green Loops have been groomed for fatbikes/skis/snowshoes. Around 5 miles
    • Other trails are open for hiking but please do not use groomed trails to access these trails.

  • Trail Etiquette Refresh

    Trail Ettiquite Refresher

With the explosion of new riders on the trails, it's probably a good idea for a refresher PSA on trail etiquette.

    • Only ride open trails. Trails close when muddy and sometimes for user safety issues or special events. Check the trail status app for the latest local trail conditions.
    • Leave no trace. Stay on the trail: don't shortcut features or switchbacks and don't modify features without permission. If you can't ride it, walk it. Land managers don't appreciate braided trails and closing them takes time away from other projects our trail builders want to accomplish. Pack out trash and pickup some more on the way out.
    • Stay in control. Ride within your ability and slow down for corners with low visibility (expect someone on the other side). Don't skid! Skidding tears up the trail and makes the trail builders sad. It also makes you look like a newb.
    • Yield appropriately. Be courteous to other trail users by letting them know your presence. Follow trail signs for travel direction if they exist. Follow existing traffic laws when on roads (yes they apply to bikes too).
    • Don't scare animals. Equestrians share some of the trails we ride and horses can be startled easily. Approach cautiously and ask the horse rider for guidance if planning to pass.
    • Be prepared & self sufficient. Give your gear a quick check before each ride and bring the necessary tools for common mechanical problems (tube, pump, multi-tool, zip ties, etc.) Don't forget a snack & water for longer rides. Be aware of the weather.

  • Winter Trail Conditions

    ❄
    Important Winter Trail Information
    ❄

Winter weather is here and local trails will be experiencing freeze thaw cycles. This means conditions will be unsuitable for riding (as well as foot traffic) until the ground freezes solid and daytime temperatures stay well below freezing. Click here to learn more.

  • Night Riding

When the days get shorter and weekday riding opportunities fade, some riders opt to strap on lights and hit the trails after dark. Below are the current policies of local parks regarding night riding and after dark trail closures.

    • Sunderbruch: Night riding is allowed at all hours. Park in the lot outside the main gates to avoid getting locked in!
    • Stephen's Park: Night riding is allowed. Park is open until 11pm.
    • Illiniwek: Night riding is allowed until 10pm. Be off the trails and out of the park by 10pm.
    • Dorrance: Night riding is allowed until 10pm. Be off the trails and out of the park by 10pm.
    • Scott County Park: For the month of October, SCP is allowing night riding. Riders must be off the trails and out of the park by 9:30pm.
    • Westbrook Park: Night riding is not allowed unless officially recognized by the park. Trails open dawn to dusk.
    • Sylvan Island: Night riding not allowed. Trails open from 6 am to sunset.
