New Glenn (2 stage) |
The New Glenn is a partially reusable heavy lift launch system developed by Blue Origin.
Stage 1 with a diameter of 7 m is powered by seven methane / LOX fueled BE-4 engines. The first stage is reusable 25 times by landing on a barge off the coast. The second stage, also 7 m in diameter, uses two liquid hydrogen / liquid oxygen fueled vacuum opitimzed BE-3U engines. The upper stage for the three-stage version uses a single liquid hydrogen / liquid oxygen fueled BE-3U engine.
The two-stage version stands 98 m tall. The two-stage version will be able to put 45 tons into a low earth orbit and 13 tons into a geostationary transfer orbit. The three stage version was later cancelled.
The standard 2 stage version was rebranded New Glenn 7x2 in late 2025.
An improved and lengthend version called New Glenn 9x4 with 9 enguines in stage 1 and 4 engines in stage 2 is under development. It features also alarger diameter payload fairing.
Blue Origin launches the rocket from Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral. Blue Origin planned the first orbital launch for the fourth quarter of 2022 from Cape Canaveral, but was delayed to January 2025.
On 28 May 2006, the 4th New Glenn 7x2 rocket without the payload exploded on ignition during a static fire test, damaging the launch pad and infrastucture severely.
