COMSATBw 3 [Airbus DS]

SatComBw Level 3 is a German military satellite communications program comprising two main geostationary satellites, ComSatBw 1B and ComSatBw 2B, and an additional frequency-securing satellite named Sparrow. The system is designed to ensure secure, protected, and high-capacity communications for the German Armed Forces beyond 2029 as a replacement for ComSatBw 1 and 2.

The SatComBw Level 3 program addresses the increasing demand for secure and resilient satellite communications within the Bundeswehr. Compared to the previous SatComBw Stage 2, the third generation introduces significantly enhanced user capabilities and improved resistance to signal disruption. These advancements are achieved through expanded bandwidth, enhanced signal protection, and upgraded system resilience, ensuring robust communications for a range of military operations. The program includes a complete space and ground segment, supporting long-term communications requirements and operational independence.

Airbus Defence and Space (ADS) acts as the prime contractor for the program. The satellites are based on the Eurostar-Neo platform and involve a wide German value-added chain. Key components such as the guidance, payload integration, and solar arrays are provided by OHB System AG and various small and medium-sized enterprises across Germany. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) supports the program through ground infrastructure and flight operations.

The ComSatBw 1B and 2B satellites will each have a launch mass of approximately 6 metric tons and are designed for geostationary orbit operations. The Eurostar Neo platform features modern digital payload architecture and modular components, supporting evolving bandwidth demands and system flexibility. The satellites are equipped with advanced protective technologies to counter both passive and active threats to communication links. Each satellite has a planned operational lifetime of 15 years, with the possibility of extension to 20 years under contract options.

The SatComBw Level 3 space segment includes three satellites. The first, Sparrow, is a frequency protection satellite to be launched in mid-2027 to secure orbital slots and frequency rights during the transition phase from the previous generation. Sparrow will be built by OHB System AG and delivered in orbit. ComSatBw 1B and 2B are scheduled for launches in early and mid-2029, respectively, and will be handed over in orbit. The satellites are intended to ensure uninterrupted service until at least the end of 2044, with contract options extending to 2049. A contingency option for a third ComSatBw satellite exists in the event of launch failure or in-orbit performance issues.
