Kumu Ao [University of Hawaii]
Kumu Ao was an educational 1U CubeSat mission developed by students of the University of Hawaii, Honolulu (Ma-noa).
The purpose of the Kumu Ao project, which was begun in 2007, was to develop a standard Cubesat bus, to build, launch, and operate a Cubesat, to provide opportunity for Native Hawaiian engineering students, to accelerate next-generation mission development and to evaluate the Pumpkin Inc. CubeSatKit (CSK).
Although much work was done on this project over three years, toward a 2011 launch on the Super-Strypi launch vehicle, HSFL offered a workforce development opportunity to integrate existing work into an even larger project. This resulted in the cancellation of Kumu Ao in 2009 and the successful assimilation of project personnel and resources into the Hawai`i Space Flight Laboratory's Hawai`iSat-1 mission.
