hm...the first time I heard about Avatar was through commercials here and there, but I never really watched the show, because I thought it was kind of stupid and overdone. I mean, a bunch of kids saving the world, main guy gets main girl, etc.
Then, I remember this so clearly, it was Saturday night, and my little sister calls me up on my cell yelling and ranting "Did you see it?? Can you BELIEVE what he did? Poor Iroh! That little [insert word here] Azula! How could he! How could he!!"
So at first I thought she broke up with her boyfriend or something, cause I couldn't think of who else "he" might be, but when I asked her what exactly happened, she was like, "Wait, you didn't watch it? You didn't watch Crossroads of Destiny?"
"Noooo."
"Oh my gd! I can't believe you! Don't you watch Avatar?"
"Um...wait, isn't that a show about a bald kid who's got a crush on a girl and they control an element or something? Wait, why are you watching that? It's a KIDS show."
"Oh my gd! No it isn't! Avatar isn't a kids show! It's the most amazing show in existence! You have to watch it!" <--- that's almost verbatim.
So then she started telling me all about Zuko, and how he betrayed the only person to ever care about him his entire life, Iroh, and instead listened to his conniving, lying, deceiving little sister Azula.
Then she ordered me to go to turbonick.com and watch the episodes. Well, it already piqued my interest, even though I really didn't want to get caught up in another TV show since I was already into so many different fandoms.
The first episode I watched was "Crossroads of Destiny" which I have to say, made me fall in love with Azula's character. She was so different from any other villian. She relied more on strategy than on power, and she was so conniving and manipulative, especially the way she humiliated Long Feng...she seemed to have every single move planned out from the start. She also had that air of mystery surrounding her, like you couldn't get inside her head because she was so hard to read. I really wanted to know more about her, because she seemed like such an awesome character.
So naturally, I looked her up on Wikipedia, where somewhere Toph's name was linked. The first time I saw Toph, I thought something was up with her, because her eyes made her look like she was blind. But I thought to myself, she couldn't really be blind, because Avatar's a kids show, and it's about them saving the world, where do they have room for someone with a disability.
So then I watched "The Blind Bandit", and when it was confirmed in the show that she was blind, I thought she either had to be one of those weak tag-alongs that the group had pity on, or one incredible piece of work.
She turned out to be the latter.
And of course, because of "The Blind Bandit" or more specifically, cause of Taang, I actually started to really watch the show <33. Azula was an interesting character, but what clinched it for me was this special, special ship, because villians will come and go, but Taang, their interaction, the way Toph opened up to a complete stranger and the way he listened and seemed to understand, is there anything more I can say?
So for me, in essence, yes, I started watching the show consistently because of a SHIP, and that ship was Taang, and I am NOT ashamed to admit it! <333333
Now how many shippers can honestly make that kind of statement?
