Blade (Inverted Frontier Book 4)

4.4 out of 5 stars (407)

The starship Dragon, accompanied by its fleet of outriders, is faring ever deeper into that region known as the Hallowed Vasties. Here, at the shattered heart of ancient human civilization, once-living worlds were ripped apart by the dimensional intrusions of a Blade. Yet despite the apocalyptic-scale destruction, the fleet’s telescopes have picked out signs of life among the ruins and the ship’s company is eager to go on—but should they?

From his post on
Dragon’s high bridge, Urban looks ahead to the smaller starship, Griffin, now far, far in front of the fleet. The mind that pilots that ship—a stern and colder version of his lover, Clemantine—has gone silent. The implication chills him. Like Dragon, Griffin was an alien warship, designed to destroy without mercy all living worlds, and it still has a mind of its own. The question that haunts Urban: Has that alien mind somehow reclaimed control of Griffin?

It’s a question he must answer, and soon. Every wonder that lies ahead—and every ambition hidden within his heart—is at risk while
Griffin’s true nature remains unknown.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...I can't recommend Blade and the whole series highly enough. This story in particular builds to a feverishly paced climax that makes Blade a high point of the series. Nagata has created a unique and powerful form of space adventure." —John Folk-Williams, SciFi Mind

"Linda Nagata describes the far future as though she lives there and is just back to report her findings. Inverted Frontier is top notch science fiction, and
Blade carries on its vivid tradition!" —Wil McCarthy, author of Rich Man's Sky and Hacking Matter

I look forward to the audiobook. I used the kendall apps, text voice reader and enjoy the book anyway, quite a bit!

If posthuman space opera with a hard-ish sci-fi flavor is your cup of tea, then you need to check this series out. This fourth novel continues Nagata's epic series of a group of characters returning to and exploring the ruins of the core systems of human civilization.

There are megastructures and their ruins, ancient dangers, and terrible temptations to contend with. There are also the travails of long lived characters and their unexpected evolution. Highly recommended!

A treasure house of geeky detail and copies of consciousness...

I love this whole series! The idea of "the Hallowed Vasties," the concept of alien warships governed by cells of awareness, the interior lives of humans who can copy their minds from avatar to avatar, even greater benign aliens, humans who attain godlike control over physics, and everything on a gobsmackingly "far out" level. Very crunchy and chewy for the reader's mind.

Linda Nagata's Inverted Frontier series is exceptional hard SF following a small fleet exploring the god-tech ruins of humanity's fallen interstellar civilisation. The series itself is a must-read. Blade, fourth book in the series, is the best yet--impossible to put down and over way too soon.

Linda’s *vast* (one of my favorite books of all time) imagination continues to unfurl this story of the far and alien future. It’s amazing how much complexity she manage for this epic series.

Loved the evolution of the main characters, the possibilities were endless yet you managed to create new eventualities and dashed them at the same time.

Great roller-coaster. I'm looking forward to the 5th in your series. Take your time, I can wait for a masterpiece!

I really have enjoyed this series. It’s been terrific right from the start. Some of the ideas were hard to get used to initially but I was soon up and running. I believe a new one is due this year. Whoo hooo! Can’t wait.
