ジョージ・ハリスン／リヴィング・イン・ザ・マテリアル・ワールド　Blu-ray

昔々あるところにジョンという16歳のド天才少年ロッカーがおりました。そこへこれまたド天才の15歳の少年がやって来て仲間になりました。そしてその15歳の少年が「凄いやつがいる」と言って14歳の子供を連れてきました。彼の演奏を聴いてジョンも凄いと言ってみんな仲間になりました。

さて、この3人の中で一番凄いのは誰でしょう。

ジョージ・ハリスンは二人の天才によって才能が開花したという説をよく耳にするが「いやもう最初っからド天才」と主張したい。

二人のウルトラ天才に凄いと言わしめた14歳が同等の天才でない訳がない。彼は絶対音感と並外れた聴覚記憶の能力も持ち合わせていたはずだ。そうでなければ楽曲をレコード以外で繰り返し聴くことが出来ない時代にジョンやポール以上のクオリティで再現することなどできない。

往年のビートルズファン、ジョージファンの方はアンソロジーやその他多くの記録映像を観ているのでこの作品を何となくまだ観てない(私も)かも知れません。内容的には知っていることもありましたが映像面では初見のものが多かったので観て良かったと思っています。

　監督と製作は自他ともに認めるロック好き、ザ・バンドの『ラスト・ワルツ』等の実績もあるマーティン・スコセッシ。

　楽曲の完奏はないが、未発表音源も含め全篇へ年代順にまぶされているニュアンス。

　編集作業が半端じゃないし、ビートルズのファンでも、観たことがないような画像と映像が割と多いのではないか。

　言わずと知れたポール・マッカートニー、盟友エリック・クラプトン、ビートルズ・サウンドの陰の仕掛け人ジョージ・マーティンは勿論、大瀧詠一が師匠と崇める怪しさ満点フィル・スペクター、何とモンティ・パイソンのテリー・ギリアムまで、めくるめく多彩な人選のインタヴューも圧巻。

　インド哲学の理解の度合いにはいささか疑問がないではないが、技術的にクラシックを遙かに上回るインド音楽をも併せて垣間見た後だからこそ、それらを通過儀礼としてポップに回帰し、超名曲「While My Guitar Gently Weeps」、「Here Comes the Sun」、「Something」、「Isn't It a Pity」、「Bangla Desh」等が生まれたのだと再確認できる。

Get Back 観てからこちらをみて　あーそうだったんだという所もあり点が線につながった感じ。

ジョージにとってはBeatlesは長い人生の中にある通過点だったんだなと思います。しかしBeatlesファンの

私はBeatlesに関する話のときは前のめりで聞きいってました。この作品でジョージの性格みたいのが自分なりにわかった感じがしました。ジョンとの不仲説とかも違うなと思いました。

そういう時もあったかもしれませんが、お互い兄弟喧嘩みたなかんじだったのかも知れませんね　

いろいろ考えさせられる作品です。まさに人生「All Things Must Pass 」感慨深くてジョージの芯の強さに魅かれます。

Beatlesファンならみる価値大ありです。

マーティン・スコセッシ監督によるドキュメンタリー。

子供のころ、セット・オン・ユーを聞いたぐらいですが、

おすすめ作品の中にあって、買ってみたものです。

ドイツでの活動といった、ビートルズ前夜の話から、

ビートルズの成功、その後が映し出されています。

詳しい方は、よくご存じな話も多いでしょうが、

特典映像の74年の北米ツアー、

ディスビュート&ヴァイオレンスを見ると、

面白い音楽をやっていたことがわかり、

インド音楽や楽器の良さはまだわかりやすいのですが、

後半、ジョージの人生の大事な部分になっていく、

インド哲学の話は難しいですが。

シタールの師からルーツを探せと言われて、

ハートブレイク・ホテルを思い出し、ロックの世界に戻ってきたり。

特典映像にサウンド分析が入っていますが、

インド帰りのジョージに7拍子のヒア・カムズ・ザ・サンを渡され

リンゴがこれは頭で考えたものじゃないと言いながら

自然に湧き上がってきたような曲、

フィーリング、感覚で作った、という意味なんでしょうか

普通に叩くと面白くないからと、リンゴがリズムの取り方を考えていたり。

興味深いエピソードがたくさんで。

いい曲をつくりたい。

ジョージがそう言っていましたが、

どのミュージシャンも結局はこの一言につきるかな。

よく知らなくて見ても、いいドキュメンタリーでしたが、

デビュー以前のことやエリック・クラプトンとの交友

バングラディシュ・コンサートなど

ある程度の予備知識があった方が、より楽しめるかもしれません。

廉価版扱いなのか、買ったときはブルーレイでも1500円程度で。

時間も3時間半と長いですが、内容が濃く見どころが多いので、

興味がある方は、家でじっくり見てみてください。

Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese's documentary on the late Beatle George Harrison, GEORGE HARRISON: LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD, named after the singer's 1973 album of the same name, was released in the U.K. last fall on DVD and Blu-ray, and aired in the U.S. on HBO. Finally, the U.S. DVD/Blu-ray is out, and it is well worth the wait.

The film airs in two parts: Part 1 covers George's life from his Liverpool childhood through the height of Beatlemania and beyond. Part 2 begins with the White Album-era tensions between The Beatles, and the group's eventual split, then focuses on George's solo career and his personal life. There is one significant gap: the documentary seems to skip from his 1974 U.S. tour (essential unseen footage here) to the Traveling Wilburys era, and leaves out his Dark Horse Records solo work from 1976-1992, including his 1987 comeback album Cloud Nine and his 1991 tour of Japan with Eric Clapton. The Dark Horse Years 1976 - 1992 box set does fill these gaps, as does a recently released iPad Multi-Touch e-book on iTunes. The film's most glaring omission is during the segment on John Lennon's murder and its effect on George, which unfortunately does not mention Harrison's wonderful tribute song, "All Those Years Ago," recorded with the other surviving Beatles, which was a #2 hit for George in 1981 (Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" was Number One).

The film does cover Harrison's career as a filmmaker with his company HandMade Films, including such hits as LIFE OF BRIAN and TIME BANDITS, with a brief mention of The Rutles thrown in for good measure, but wisely skips HandMade's Sean Penn/Madonna box office flop, SHANGHAI SURPRISE. It also candidly deals with George's near-fatal 1999 stabbing and his ultimately losing battle with cancer.

There's much archival footage of George throughout, much of it from The Beatles Anthology, including some outtakes, There are highlights of his musical career too, including the best-sounding versions of The Beatles' 1962 Hamburg Star-Club tapes that I have ever heard. Whoever did the remastering on those songs should be hired by Apple for a proper re-release of those tracks. There are interviews with Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, Sir George Martin, the late Neil Aspinall, George's lifelong friends Eric Clapton and Ravi Shankar, fellow Wilburys Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, his wife Olivia and son Dhani, race-car drivers Jackie Stewart and Gordon Murray (George loved Formula One racing, and even wrote a song about it ("Faster," from 1979's George Harrison album)), and others. Pattie Boyd Clapton, George's first wife, speaks candidly about their troubled marriage, and her affair with Eric Clapton, who she would subsequently marry and divorce. Even convicted murderer "Crazy Phil" Spector gets into the mix, discussing the production of All Things Must Pass [BOXED EDITION] and The Concert For Bangladesh (Limited Deluxe Edition) - the interview was probably done before his imprisonment.

Overall, the film is a fine, loving tribute to George, just as the late David L. Wolper's Imagine: John Lennon (Deluxe Edition) was for John.

The Deluxe Edition contains the film on two DVDs, and a single-disc Blu-ray. Both have eleven bonus features, including six (not specifically indicated on the packaging) that are not on the standard DVD or Blu-ray release.

The four musical features are: 1) George playing his ukelele to (it sounds like) the old standard "A Shine On Your Shoes" (uncredited); 2) a soundcheck of the B-side "Deep Blue" from The Concert For Bangladesh; 3) a segment from Abbey Road Studios where George Martin and son Giles "break down" the master of "Here Comes The Sun," much to the delight of Dhani Harrison; and 4) a Shankar Family and Friends instrumental called "Dispute And Violence," recorded live during the 1974 U.S. tour.

The seven interview segments include pieces on George's growing up in Liverpool, George describing the origins of the poem "The Inner Light," which became the basis for his first Beatles B-side, and interviews with Paul McCartney, Neil Aspinall, Jeff Lynne, and race car drivers Gordon Murray and Damon Hill.

The sort-of soundtrack CD, also available separately as Early Takes Volume 1: Music From The Martin Scorsese Picture Living In The Material World, consists of 10 Harrison demos and alternate takes, most, if not all, from the early-to-mid-1970s.

The four discs are housed in a deluxe gatefold book with a Hamburg-era photo of George on the front cover, and a Linda McCartney photo of George (probably late '60s or early '70s) on the back cover. There are also two stand-alone photos, one from Hamburg, and the other from the mid-'60s, with an easel included, as well as a soft-cover 96-page book, which is an abridged version of the hardback book George Harrison: Living In The Material World. Casual fans who already own the book and don't care about the DVD/Blu-ray extras may want to purchase the standard Blu-ray or DVD editions, and buy the EARLY TAKES CD separately. But for fans who want it all in one fell swoop, this Deluxe Edition is essential.

Happy 75th birthday, George, wherever you are (February 25, 2018). Olivia celebrated this milestone by reissuing THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE on vinyl and Blu-ray for the first time, as well as CD and DVD. The double CD and 4-LP vinyl box set are sold separately, but the two-disc DVD and Blu-ray reissues are available only as a combo pack with the double CD. There was also a limited-edition box set containing the LP, CD, DVD, and Blu-ray, along with a limited-edition super deluxe book, but it sold out very quickly.

Although the pre-order says it is not released until the 10th October, my copy arrived this morning (8th October). Not that I am complaining at all and everything was on hold until I had watched it all. What a wonderful film and how nice to see George as the centre of attention for once.

This really is a very long film - part 1 is 94 mins and the second disc (with part 2 and bonus features) is 122 mins. However, it is so well put together and so interesting that you really feel it could be even longer. The film starts with George's time in Liverpool, but it is not exhaustively in order. Although the interviews generally cover things in biographical sequence - Liverpool, Hamburg, touring, etc, it does cut backwards and forwards. So, there are clips of the Beatles signing papers to break up the band during interviews covering earlier times, for example. Some of the clips with George appear to be from the Anthology interviews and had previously appeared in the Anthology. There is also some footage from the Anthology featuring Paul, George and Ringo looking at old photographs, which is very funny. A vast array of people were interviewed, including, of course, Paul and George. Also those involved with Handmade films, from George's passion with cars and racing and members of the Wilbury's. Phil Spector looks very nervous and twitchy, Eric Clapton is very interesting and Yoko is extremely gracious and generous in her comments, as always.

As a Beatle fan I have to say that Ringo is constantly entertaining and always manages to make you smile. His story of an early tour, where Paul had the car keys and George, having hopped behind the wheel of the car, was insisting he would drive made me almost cry with laughter. Just the way Ringo looked so resigned about this argument which went on for an hour and a half... It makes you realise how very young they all were and how well they all dealt with the enormous fame that hit them - as Eric Clapton comments, being with George was like being bathed in sunshine. The fame was so huge and the aura that surrounded them, even when they were unknown was recognisable. Their charisma carried them through so much and marked them as being special. Ringo also speaks about the last time he saw George, which is extremely moving.

All in all, this is a must buy for Beatle fans. From rare interviews with George's brothers (telling of how the Beatles insisted at playing at one of their weddings and John - of course John - tipped a glass of water over a woman playing the piano) to rare clips and some of the most beautiful music ever created. This is a very special film about a very special man. Buy, watch and enjoy.

Le film est long (2 parties de quasiment 2h). Découvert sur Canal et vu par bribes sur plusieurs séances, j'avais envie de le regarder sans ce fractionnement, en un seul tenant. De la genèse à la dissolution des Beatles, de la jeunesse à la maturité des protagonistes, dans un kaléidoscope de flashbacks, d'extraits de concerts, de séances d'enregistrements et de créativité, d'interview divers et variés, j'ai savouré avec un plaisir fou cet ensemble d'images rythmé par ces chansons incontournables à jamais gravées dans ma mémoire. La cerise sur le gâteau est pour moi la découverte de l'homme profondément mystique qu'est George Harrison avec une présence spirituelle plus profonde que les clichés des reportages sur les Beatles en Inde me permettaient de l'imaginer. Très bon film (pour les amateurs du genre), une ouverture d'esprit intéressante à la fin des 4 heures. George Harrison : vous étiez un Monsieur, non au fait : Vous "êtes" un Monsieur, car si j'ai bien compris, la présence de l'âme est intemporelle.
