For self-styled Gods, so far the Goa’uld weren’t proving as all-powerful as they claimed to be. They had superior weapons, sure, along with more advanced technology, bigger and better spaceships, and greater numbers, and yet…

Several times now, SG-1 and other SG teams had managed to evade them, despite their supposed advantages. Even now, as they prepared to launch an attack on earth from space, they weren’t having the success they’d obviously been expecting. Then again, they’d assumed their approach to the planet of the Tau’ri would be undetected, that no one would be aware of them until it was too late, and that might well have been the case if Daniel hadn’t managed to bumble his way into an alternate reality and acquire vital intel before finding his way home.

O’Neill was pretty sure no one else could have managed that; perhaps it was only because Daniel had an honest face and radiated sincerity that he’d been able to pull off that nifty trick. He’d kinda done the same with the rest of SG-1, which was why they were here, aboard one of the Goa’uld ships, plotting to destroy them both before they could launch their attack on a not quite unsuspecting earth…

SG-1 weren’t having everything their way though, and although it went against all of O’Neill’s instincts, they’d had to leave Danny boy behind on the other ship, covering their backs. He was badly injured, would have slowed them down, but Jack would have dragged him with them anyway, and maybe he should have, except he hadn’t thought any of them would be getting out of here alive. If it was the end of the line for the team, they should each at least go down fighting in whatever way would serve the others best, and if Daniel could buy them even a little more time with his rearguard action, it could mean the difference between success and failure.

But now… maybe there was a chance of survival, at least for the three of them and Bra’tac; a slim one, true, but it was better than none.

Winging towards earth, their home planet displayed before them in all its glory against the backdrop of space, safe from an attack that would have left civilisation shattered and the human race enslaved, was worth everything they’d been through. And then to see the space shuttle rising towards them… That had to be one of the finest moments in Jack O’Neill’s life, but it was tarnished by the knowledge that they’d left a man behind, one of their team, one of their friends. That was something he never would have done under other circumstances, and it hurt, but they would all make sure Daniel’s bravery and selflessness would not be forgotten.

Arriving back at the SGC to find that Daniel, alive and well, had somehow beaten them home, Jack could only laugh; it was the perfect ending to the whole mission. Honestly, he should have known their friend wouldn’t go down so easily. Daniel led a charmed life; no matter what happened to him, or where he ended up, he always found a way back home. The Goa’uld had done their worst, or tried to, but they’d been defeated by three humans and two Jaffa. Despite everything, earth was still free, and every member of SG-1 was still standing.

Yeah, that wasn’t a bad day’s work at all.
