Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection
At Ballotpedia, we believe that everyone deserves meaningful, reliable, trustworthy information about their candidates. We also know that good informationāespecially at the local levelāis hard to find. That's why Ballotpedia created Candidate Connection.
We ask all federal, state, and local candidates to complete the Candidate Connection questionnaire and share what motivates them on political and personal levels. Our questionnaire helps voters better understand how their candidates think about the world and how they intend to govern—information they need to feel confident in their choice.
Candidates are asked a standard set of questions about their race and candidacy, with the option to provide additional information such as a photo, endorsements, and campaign links. We also ask open-ended questions for candidates to provide thoughtful responses, such as "What are the three main points you want voters to remember about you and your candidacy?" and "What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?"
The Candidate Connection questionnaire helps voters form a complete picture of their candidates, taking candidates from unknown to understood.

"First key message: China is outpacing the U.S. in energy grid growth and reliability. As someone whoās worked in renewable energy, Iāve seen firsthand how outdated our grid has become. Big corporations and data centers get sweetheart deals from power producers, shifting costs to families while neglecting critical transmission upgrades. Iāll fight for modern infrastructure, fair pricing, and a resilient grid that serves the people who actually pay the bills. Not for the corporations that lobby for discounts Second key message: 42% of Utah is federally controlled. Ranchers, tribes, counties, and recreationists depend on that land, but decisions are made in DC. This creates red tape, lawsuits, and inefficiency while locals shoulder the costs. In 2014, the Utah legislature passed the "Transfer Of Public Lands Act", the federal government did not comply. Utahns deserve local control over our land. Federal management traps communities in lawsuits and bureaucracy while our counties pay the bills. We can protect access, preserve heritage, and still keep national parks federal. Whatās missing is a system where Utahns decide how to manage grazing, water, and energy responsibly. Third key message: Money constantly hides in the shadows of our legislation. Super PACs, shell companies, and ānonprofitsā let billionaires and foreign interests buy influence while voters are left in the dark. Iāll fight to require full donor disclosure for ALL political spending, ban foreign-linked entities from contributing through U.S. subsidiaries, and close the revolving-door pipeline between Congress and lobbying firms. No more secret money, no more special access. Every vote, every dollar, every deal should be visible to the public, where we can hold our elected officials accountable for their actions."

"First key message: Having passed 216 bills related to education, including 137 focusing on higher education, my top priorities will continue to include education in general, with a focus on early & higher education & ensuring it is accessible, accountable, affordable & excellent for all ages, in all areas & at all levels, without unfunded mandates. This requires increasing funding for public school teachersā salaries & retirement & for financial aid, work-study, mentoring, retention, programs for at-risk & first-generation students, graduation rates, facilities, technology, research, & institutional advancement; honoring academic freedom & tenure & diversity, equity & inclusion goals; & helping more universities meet AAU standards for research universities. Second key message: Having passed 258 bills related to health & human services, my top priorities will continue to include these issues in general, with a focus on the very young, the very old, the very poor, persons with physical, intellectual & emotional disabilities & veterans. This requires expanding Medicaid; ensuring access to health care, doctors & nurses in rural areas; lowering health, medical & insurance costs while prohibiting surprise medical & ambulance billing; & increasing funding for independent living while eventually eliminating waiting lists for critical services; guardianship fraud, abuse & exploitation deterrence; & prevention/intervention/treatment for victims of abuse & critical diseases/conditions such as Alzheimerās disease & cancer. Third key message: The highest priorities of SD 21 families evolve/change over time, but always are at the top of my agenda. Currently they include affordability & reducing/managing the cost of living in general and, more specifically, of housing, education, healthcare (including in rural areas), gasoline, groceries, insurance & housing; short- & long-range goals to provide a stronger workforce & protect our environment, more & better-paying jobs, & cost-of-living increases for active & retired teachers & state employees; lower property & sales taxes, homestead exemptions from property taxes; tax holidays for back-to-school items, college textbooks & veterans; border security; & bipartisan collaboration to meet constituentsā interests, not personal interests."

"First key message: Water quality is a county wide concern. The Casper Aquifer is the primary drinking water source for Laramie and nearby rural residents, and once it is contaminated, there is no second chance. My position has remained consistent: decisions affecting the aquifer must follow established science, rely on enforceable standards, and take the long view. I do not treat water as a political issue; it is a fundamental responsibility to the people who live here. As commissioner, water quality and availability are top concerns for me. We must be responsible users, conserve where possible, and be good stewards of the land that protects our water. Water conditions across the county vary, and responsible management is essential everywhere. Second key message: Albany County has no oil, gas, or mineral extraction revenue, so responsible economic development is essential. Renewable energy projects and other modern industries can provide longāterm revenue and goodāpaying jobs when they are planned carefully and grounded in science and enforceable standards. This yearās cycle is shaped by housing shortages, workforce challenges, and strong opposition to many types of development. My position has been consistent: we need balanced, responsible growth that supports jobs, respects land and water, and reflects the realities of a county without traditional extraction income. Third key message: Albany County is largely rural, and I have long supported the hard work and dedication of the ag community that keeps this county running. Iāve always said that agriculture and tourism are two of the biggest drivers of our local economy. Supporting our ag community is something Iāve talked about in public meetings and committee work for years ā theyāre a major part of who we are as a county. Tourism and recreation are just as important. People come here to hunt, fish, hike, snowmobile, and enjoy the outdoors. Iāve consistently said that we need to maintain access, protect what makes this place special, and make sure our decisions donāt make life harder for the people who rely on these industries. These positions are part of my public record"

"First key message: According to the NC Department of Public Instruction, one in every two 5-year-olds is not kindergarten-ready when they start school in Henderson County. Kindergarten readiness is a strong predictor of school success and post-graduation success. Henderson County Public Schools (HCPS) should play a larger role in closing this crucial gap by expanding pre-K availability. Weāve seen our neighbors in Polk County successfully offer public pre-K for decades. Locally, the Henderson County Early Childhood Taskforce is bringing economic interests, nonprofits, and educators together, and if they recommend expanding pre-K, HCPS should strongly consider doing so. Second key message: Smartboards and laptops do have a place in modern classrooms. Nothing takes the place of hands-on learning, though. I applaud educators who use technology to supplement ā not supplant ā experiential learning. I support technological literacy, and we must ensure our students can think on their own, too! We need to set clear and thoughtful usage policies around AI. I have heard from parents recently who are concerned about not being able to opt their children out of AI features on their school-issued Chromebook. We need to examine AI-free options while ensuring students understand potential strengths and pitfalls of technologies including AI. Third key message: Many of our education professionals are facing a scarcity of workforce housing options. It is increasingly difficult to afford to live in Henderson County on a teacherās salary. Other school districts in North Carolina have partnered with local jurisdictions and credit unions to provide attainable housing options for teachers and first responders. I would like our school board to explore similar solutions."

Second key message: Real Education, Not Indoctrination. Our kids deserve schools that teach them how to think not what to think. I will prioritize education that builds skills, values, and real-world knowledge while keeping politics and outside agendas out of the classroom. Parents and teachers should be the foundation of our education system, not activist consultants. Third key message: Nevada-Owned Future.

Iāve been working since I was a teenager, starting in a lumber yard and later managing a gas station and auto shop. Those early experiences taught me the value of accuracy, consistency, and showing up ready to work ā lessons Iāve carried into every role since.
Beyond my shop, Iāve served on numerous boards, committees, and community organizations. That work has given me handsāon experience with budgets, governance, collaboration, and the dayātoāday realities of how county decisions affect peopleās lives. Itās taught me how to listen, how to work across differences, and how to keep things moving when the stakes are real.
My lifelong connection to this community, combined with years of business ownership and volunteer leadership, has prepared me to serve effectively as a County Commissioner. What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
"āWhere Is the Love?ā by the Black Eyed Peas. I keep wondering where is the music like that today? Songs that actually said something, challenged the world, and called for unity. That track hit different, and it still does. Itās a reminder of what weāve lost and what we need to fight to get back."

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
