*So you think Smackdown is just a show? You think the superstars are not real athletes, and what they do is a joke? Well tell that to Eddie Guerrero's face--just make sure you avoid staring at the 16 stitches in his head that resulted from his match with John Bradshaw Layfeild at Judgement Day. It might be a little easier to say it to JBL, since the staples he had to have put in his scalp as a result of that match are a little more hidden. Yes, a big part of the WWE is entertainment. We wouldnt call it Sports-Entertainment if it wasnt. But dont ever forget the first half of that phrase. Because what these performers do to their bodies in that ring is very real. As Raw announcer Jim Ross has said on many occasions, you simply cant teach someone how to fall. If you dont belive that, then I suggest you never attempt to break into this buisness, because you'd be in for a very rude awakening. One of the common misconceptions of this industry is that the blood not real. That could not be further from the truth. Being backstage at Judgement Day as Guerrero and JBL came back through the curtain would have made converts out of the most die-hard doubters. As i stood a mere 3 feet from Eddie, watching blood pour from his forehead like a water faucet, there were no doubts in my mind, I can tell you that. As the officials helped carry him to a waiting ambulance, leaving a trail of blood puddles in their wake like a horror movie, there was no doubt. And by the looks of terror and concern on the faces of family and friends of both Eddie, and JBL, I could tell they were certainly convinced. You want to talk about reality? In any other sport, athletes would never be expected to push themselves this far. Any boxing match would've been stopped way before it got tis bad. But these two men toughed it out and fought to a conclusion--even if it was disqualification. That alone makes WWE more "real" than most sports. What you didnt see after the cameras went off at Judgement Day was Eddie Guerrero collapsing in the ring after the adrenalin rush wore off.The waiting ambulance carried him to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for excessive blood loss and not released until 1 a.m. Tell that man that what he does for a living is a sham. The Eddie Guerrero vs. John Bradshaw Layfeild match at Judgement day was one of the goriest encounters ever santioned in the ring. It was also one of the strongest testaments to the validy of what WWE superstars actually do. And by the time you read this, it will be a mere days after the Guerrero/Layfield match at the Great American Bash. At this point, I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to what that match holds in store for them. What I do know is that it is just another day at the office for the hardest-working performers in sports entertainment. In conclusion, I leave you with some true words of wisdom for the doubters, "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how strong the man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena , whose face is marred by the dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs , and comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who doesactually strive to do the deeds; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who mspends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of achievment, and who at the worst, if he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat" -Theodore Roosevelt*
