Still Breathing

I just went through and changed several posts to private or friends only to separate my fan life and professional life. Surreal trip through memory lane, since I started this blog over 20 year ago. I'm still single. I left Okcupid for a while and have given it a second chance in the past year. It sucks now. I miss what it used to be. There's more screening, but the match system is terrible now. Too many barriers to just talk to people... and yeah, I complained about the weirdos but it used to be a good site to find friends and people to just hang out with. I miss that aspect.

Got to kind of be a "mom" by raising my nephew.

I fell out of fandom for a while. Broke up with Star Wars, drifted away from Harry Potter. I've gotten back into some Star Wars groups (Legends, not the new stuff). But I need to focus my writing energy on things I can monetize. So leaving this blog up cause, never say never. I do want to write my 6th year HP fic before I die. I think I may have even started it somewhere.

Okcupid Wall of Shame

Guys if you send a girl or message, and she's doesn't reply. Either A. she's busy, and you should be patient. B. she doesn't want to talk to you. Or C. You just wrote something so nonsensical or inappropriate, she's having trouble formulating a reply.

Keep in mind there are very specific reply criteria on my profile, because I am a busy person. This guys managed to hit all three reasons very quickly. Nothing like the holidays to bring out the drunk and lonely...

You look nice

Sent from the OkCupid app Dec 22, 2015

Hey

Sent from the OkCupid app Yesterday

What's up stop being so snobby and hit me back you look nice I'm just like you raising my niece and nephews from my sister just cause I've been multiplied before u won't even care

I'm at the point of adding "Do not mention my physical appearance at all" to my requirement list. If that's all you have to say, we don't have much to talk about. But the first two messages aren't necessarily the problem. It's number 3 that lands this guy on the block list.

By message 3, he's switched over to insult tactics. There is no attempt at punctuation. While he clearly demonstrates that he can spell "you", he gives up on attempting to do so by the second sentence. While I'm a little curious to know if he's been part of a cloning experiment, I doubt that's what he means by "multiplied".

Just so you know I'm not dead...

I'm not dead. I'm not. Just had little time for fandom loves. The first half of next year is looking really busy too. But with a little luck, the second half will ease up and give me a little window for fan projects.

I bring you a funny entry for the okcupid hall of shame. At the moment my profile announces that I'm on hiatus from dating. So the messages I'm getting now are primarily from people who haven't bothered to read my profile.

Personal details omitted for privacy reasons:

Hey U. How are U doing?? By the way...My Name is [First Name]. I am [number] Years Old Native Alaskan Indian that's Single and Looking for a Damn Good, Wonderful, and Great Woman to be in My Life and Have a Good, Wonderful, and Great Relationship with. I am Sick and Tired of being Single, Alone, and Lonely. I Just Want a Good, Wonderful, and Great Woman to be in My Life and Spend the Rest of My Life with. If U Wish to get to Know Me More and Interested in Trying to get into a Relationship with Me (then Feel Free to Call or Text Me.) My Name is [First Name] and My Cellphone Number is [Phone Number] Alright. I Hope to Hear from U Soon!! That's if U are Interested in getting to Know Me More Ok. Well...U take Care for now Alright!! Goodbye for now Ok!! Kisses N Hugs U!! (MWAH!!) Goodbye!!

Pity is he's cute. But any guy with a 666 in his screen name is probably not up my conservative Christian ally.
I've been waiting for someone to make a Harry Potter fanvid to this song:

<lj-embed id="6" />

As for me, been busy with pro stuff. It's been kind of a sad, sulky year for fandom. Aaron Allston died, and he's someone I really liked and was hoping to know better. Great writer, and a cool, funny, classy guy.

This year is dedicated to me wrapping up projects and maintaining some kind of marketing presence on the web. I hates marketing.

Of Monsters and Men - Epic Video

Haven't been doing much fandom stuff recently. Seems like everything is work or nephew. My new (as in discovered a few months ago) musical love is "Of Monsters and Men". I often find myself disappointed by music videos, but this one is just epic:

<lj-embed id="5" />

I miss my nerd friends...

<xml:namespace ns="livejournal" prefix="lj">Some days I get very frustrated by people who seem to go out of their way to misread what I've written. I don't mean stories. Readers can make their own interpretation of tales. That's half the fun. I mean very simple pieces of information in forums. Sometimes this is my failure to communicate clearly, and I accept responsibility for that. But I'm also hitting the "monkey of moderate intelligence" group on Linked In.

No mistake, there are some brilliant, wonderful people on Linked In, who are great contacts. And then there are other people... The sad thing is this particular group is supposed to be writers. You would hope the reading comprehension in writers groups might be a bit higher, but slowly I'm realizing a majority of these people hang about this group because they have no clue what they're doing. Now the ones who just admit that and are there to learn don't bug me. The young people and newbies don't bug me. It's these older guys who haven't made this writing thing work yet and blame the critics, blame the system, blame everything but their own lackluster stories. It makes my head hurt.

/end gripe.

For your amusement... another entry on the okcupid wall of shame. What's worse than a form letter introduction? A really badly written form letter (personal details removed):

Hello. How are U doing?? I'm Fine. What's up with U?? Nothing much. By the way...........My Name is [Name]. I am [number] Years Old going on [Birthdate]. I am from [City & State]. I am Single and Looking for a Good, and Nice [state] Woman to Have a Good, and Nice Relationship with, and Have a Good Life with, and Spend the Rest of My Life with Also. I am not Looking for a Woman that's a Player, Cheater, Constant Liar, or a Woman that Plays Head, and Mind Games. Because I am not in to Those Childish Things. By the way...............................I am a Nice, Cool, Sweet, Charming, Kind, Kind Hearted, Loving, Caring, Down To Earth, Out Going, Honest, Truthful, Trusting, Trustworthy, Wonderful, and Great Guy that U Would Love to get to Know. If U are Interested in getting to Know Me More (then Feel Free to Give Me Ur Number then I'll Call U when I get the Chance.) We Will Talk, and Chat, and get to Know Each Other from There Ok. My Name is [Name]. If U Give Me Ur Number then I can Find a Way to Call U Ok. Sorry!! I don't Have a Cell Phone at this Time as it's Broke and Out Of Order Right now. I Will be getting a New Phone or a Replacement Phone Soon. Well.............I Hope to Hear from U Soon!! U take Care for now Alright. Kisses N Hugs U!! (MWAH!!) Goodbye!!

So he doesn't even have the typing on his cell excuse...</xml:namespace>

Les Miserables and Twilight

So after watching the epic awfulness of Breaking Dawn Part 2, my sis broke out her Les Mis DVD so we could regain some brain cells.

I had really hoped to catch Les Mis in the theatre, since I've been craving a film version of this musical for ages. But it never worked out, so this was my first viewing. Kind of glad I missed the theatre release now...

Samantha Barks was perfect as Eponine. The three kid actors were brilliant. Though I didn't like Gavroche's hair cut, his singing made that easy to overlook. The Bishop was good.

Unfortunately the rest of the casting was either awful or ill used. And the director seemed to have forgotten this was a musical and thus should have music as a central element...with actual singing. They talked their way through far too much, whispered things that should have been belted out in passionate tones. I could understand that some songs need to be truncated for time constraints, but they changed a lot of lines inside songs that were pointless or worse for the change, and kept a lot of weaker musical moments that should have been cut. The camera stood still when it should have moved and moved random places when it should have stayed still.

I got the feeling that the director and some of the actors had absolutely no clue what Les Mis is about. There were guns in the heavenly chorus for pity's sake!

I'm not saying the actors were bad, but the casting and direction were...the film couldn't find a consistent balance between realism and stylization. I would have been okay with either approach, (though I admit I'd have preferred a more realistic/historical take), but the bouncing between the two was off putting.

I need to read the novel... I would have found some changes more acceptable if I knew they were trying to bridge novel elements back in...

I finished the rewrite and put the story through a round of editing that lead to a little extra rewriting (added two or three paragraphs). Looking for beta testers now.

Think I need to devote December to updating Cafepress and making solid marketing plans as well as the normal year end junk.

I'm looking forward to Christmas, but not having as much fun with the gifting this year. Not that I mind spending a little money or doing a little shopping, just not doing well in the idea department...beyond socks...I'm honestly contemplating giving people socks... No time to make stuff this year. Least not unless, I knit every spare minute.
What I LOVE about GMX

It's local. The time of year is perfect. I really like having a 6pm Friday to 6pm Sunday con. It's a true weekend con. Bigger/longer isn't always better. Great venue. Free parking. Interesting guests...people who are making it in the industry and have great stories to tell. There was a really good variety to the panel topics and events.

What needs work...

GMX is a relatively new and growing con...so there's a learning curve. It was a little hard to figure out where the guest tables were. Might help to mark those more clearly.

I think the sex/alcohol could be toned down a bit. The GMX babes need to either go, or wear more clothes in the middle of the day. (Maybe scif/Fantasy themed outfits rather than just sparkly mini-skirts.) I have nothing against attractive women, but I think a geek con needs to be emphasizing it's geekiness not it's sex appeal. There are plenty of other venues for that.

Most costumes were cool and appropriate, but there were some female con goers walking around with their rears very exposed in the middle of the day. And a few that have very bloody/ scary costumes while there were still kids walking around. (I will say most zombies waited til nightfall, out of good courtesy and common sense...but it would be nice to make it official.)

Honestly, I don't think kids under age 13 ought to go to cons, but parents bring them anyway. And teenagers ought to have their youth respected. Not to mention, I don't like having my eyes assaulted by the naked rears of total strangers. Official guidelines would be nice.

What massively FAILED this year...

Scheduling was a mess. There were great events and panels going. They were just scheduled at weird times.

I was told registration started at 2pm, but there was nothing to do Friday night until 8pm. I truly believe panels should have started at 6pm. People were looking rather bored.

Instead of making use of these waking hours, day time panels were scheduled for the middle of the night. I had lots of people tell me how they really wanted to come to the Sherlock Holmes or Draco Malfoy panel, but the midnight and 1am time frame made it impossible.

This was the ONLY all ages Harry Potter panel at the con. A 10 and 12 year old stayed up and braved the zombies and alcohol just to come to my Draco panel at midnight.

I'd suggest All Ages panels run 9am to 9pm, and then they can start the adult panels at 9 or 10. Most cons do this, and there's good reason for it.

Also there were no printed schedules. I appreciate the attempt to go paperless, but not everyone has a smart phone. Nor does everyone want one. The schedule screens might have made up for it, if there had been a way to keep them still and stop them from rotating so quickly. They were hard to read. It made it very difficult to plan out your day, which is usually my first step. The only panel descriptions were available online...which was a bit of an issue too.

At the very least, there should have been a printer friendly version of the schedule on the website, and ideally a few printed copies available for those who don't have iphones/ipads. I tried printing out the schedule after I got home the first night....but couldn't figure out how to make it print properly short of doing screen caps and resizing it in photoshop.

The Avengers was kinda lame

So finally got to watch the Avengers last night. I have to admire Marvel for setting up this sort of web like film series that they have, feeding into a sort of central film series. It was brilliant marketing, and my friend kept telling me how true it was to the comics, so probably a nice translation.

But it was also rather mind numbingly boring and predictable. I felt like I was watching the Green Hornet, since the film was 1/3 Iron man being obnoxious, 1/3 the heroes fighting with each other, and 1/3 things getting blown up. I still love Captain America...and Thor was more likable than I thought he might be, may give the Thor movie a try now. But over all, I was just bored out my mind. Loki was such a cookie cutter villian...I'd had him hyped as interesting/quirky...nope.

Robert Downey Jr. may just need to go on my list of actors whose movies I avoid. He was absolutely grating, and I still haven't forgiven him for ruining Sherlock Holmes. Jude Law as Watson was such brilliant casting....and I couldn't enjoy it cause Downey was such a horrific Holmes.

Bill Bixby and Lou Ferringo have permantly spoiled me on the Incredible Hulk. The movie Hulk was way too inconsistent. No control, can't control himself, angst angst over lack of control, etc. etc....oh wait final battle, now suddenly the Hulk can control himself, take orders, and make snarky comments.

I enjoy fantastic movies, I just like them to work within their own logic.

Back to Cordance...

I once met a guy on the underground that said he didn't dare read Harry Potter cause it seemed to be like crack. This may be an apt comparison. Shifting out of HP mode to work on my original world is tricky.

I have this weird love/hate thing going with my original novel. I'll read it once and absolutely love it. Then I'll read it again and think it's truly awful. I've had this flip flop happen over months between readings but also over the course of a few days (like last week). Trying to organize my notes now like I did with my HP fanfic and get them all on the computer for easy reference.

To get back in the mode of the world and hopefully build a little fanbase, I'm writing a serial on fictionpress set in the same world that gives the backstory for one of the four/five main characters. I've already changed details from the character's account of her history in the novel. But none of the plot critical stuff just tiny details. Like I'd originally intended for her to be 30+, but the new math makes her 27-28...this annoys me for some reason. I think it also makes a bit more literary sense for other reasons...creates more connection between the characters.

Unlike Max Sunshine...which has been shelved for the time being... (though I'm actually happy with the progress made on developing characters), I'll actually be finishing this serial on fiction press....just got no idea how long it will be. Trying to update every Friday. Think I may need to shift my financial blog updates to Wednesday or Thursday, since trying to do both this last week didn't work.

I've been spending a little too much time on Cafepress. Not wasted time by any means. The shop is doing better, and it's time to gear up for the Christmas season....but the more instant gratification of Cafepress has got me spending the lionshare of my working time there...when I should really only be putting in about an hour per day on that site. I need to be updating Zazzle regularly...I just loath the interface. Somewhere in there I need to work on my budgetting book again...eventually the temp will fall below 80 and "It's too hot" will no longer be a valid excuse not to work on it. >_>

My sis is at Dragoncon

And may be planning to stay an extra day for site seeing in Atlanta (not clear on this).

I'm sure at some point she asked my mom about watching my nephew for the weekend (probably...mom doesn't recall her asking, but after her stroke, her memory is not so hot)...the thing is when my mom is watching my nephew it's usually me doing the actual watching unless I physically leave the house or hole up in my room and shut this door. My sis never once asked if I minded watching him or if I had any interest in going. (I can't this year, but it is nice to be asked...)

My sis apparently can afford to go on trips by herself (I understand she's getting a very good break on sharing a hotel room...but still between admission, gas, food, and swag, she will drop a few hundred on this weekend.) and buy new clothes, jewelry, and shoes just for the trip. She can afford to eat out daily, have her eyebrows waxed regularly, and a cell phone with an unlimited data plan and can drop money on farm town (yeah, the facebook game) and an eHarmony subscription. But threw a giant hissy fit when I asked for gas money to drive her son to school. She doesn't pay rent, owes my parents money, called me a **tch for asking her not to take down a horribly unflattering picture of me from facebook, that I had also asked her not to take in the first place.

She got sick this week. I drove her to the doctor, drove her to get some fluids at the grocery and drop off her insurance check, took her home, made her soup and got her juice. She reported to the facebook community (going to the doctor/store/etc.), stating that the soup and fluids made her feel much better but excluded any reference to someone else fixing them or taking her anywhere, and didn't say please or thank you or mention that I got these for her or was the one who realized she was probably dehydrated and started her on fluids before we got to the doctors.

There are worse sisters out there, but the lack of respect really bugs me. She was getting better for a while, but it's been a big back slide recently. Her friends aren't helping. She's borderline broke, but they tell her "You CAN'T miss Dragoncon." ...that is a direct quote. I've tried to appeal to one of our mutual friends about her shoppaholic/overspending issues (She is a recovering shoppaholic, who has made a lot of progress but needs support), and all I get in response is "well it's her money". If she didn't have a son or debts or keep dumping on me, I'd be happy to agree. Unfortunately, she has a lot of childless, professional friends who make far more than she does and don't have the responsibilities that come with a child. So I realize they're not ill intentioned, but they're not doing much to encourage her to be responsible or understanding what's meant when she says "I'm not sure I can afford it". And when I try to encourage responsibility, I get villianized or feel like I'm getting villianized.

If it weren't for my nephew, I wouldn't care so much...but I'm sorry, when you have a kid, job number one is being a mom. You have to be finacially responsible for two.

My parents are enablers. They don't need the money right now (though they probably will later on), so they allow her to go rent free and only pay them back as the whim takes her. My mom always agrees to watch my nephew when she wants to go out.

Part of me would love to just play mom to my nephew...but I don't think that's healthy for either of us in the long term. I need to get my career moving forward, and he needs to bond with his actual mom. So I do end up leaving the house or holing up in my room in the evenings to force her to interact with him.

She is not a terrible mom. She does put him to bed most evenings, give him baths, and wash his clothes, etc. She takes him to school and picks him up on her days off. I'm glad for both their sakes that my parents, and I can support her. I'd just like some basic courtesy and not have to feel like I'm training a parent as well as raising a child.

This is the entirity of the conversation before I blocked this guy:

HIM: hey negativekay,
you seem a very arrogant girl, thats the only thing i could read from your profile.
i wanted to ask you to go out and see a movie and have fun, but i hate arrogant women.

ME: You're right. My profile is almost as arrogant as messaging someone just to rub in their face that you don't like their profile.

HIM: I was just joking Kay. is that you name btw? you mentioned lot of details about your dream man on your profile, but what about the physical appearance, do you have any preference?

ME: Hm...how on earth did I miss that being called arrogant and told that you hate people like me was a joke? Just a thought, but the next time you contact a woman you might try not insulting her.

I don't really have a single physical type. I prefer healthy and sure I find some guys more attractive than others, but I don't really have a features lists. Red hair is kind of a turn off for me, but that's probably because both my siblings are redheads.

HIM: thats how i made you reply back Kay. . you see, your not the smartest one out there. lol
you are cute and beautiful, but i have a question, why your name is negativekay?
i have black hair and i am healthier than a working horse. i can send you some pics of me if you want.

ME: Thank you for reminding me why I have a no replying to jerks policy.

The scariest part of this is that he seemed to think he still had a snowballs chance in hell with me. No, the scariest part is that there are guys who think they can gloss over abusive language as long as they remember to call you pretty.

Farewell Snape

I finished the last chapter of Severus Snape and the Last Year yesterday (technically really early this morning). Took a day off to update Cafepress. Will probably do a final read through and post tomorrow. Made a new Dexter design I'm happy with.

I effectively have written a 100,000+ word novel in less than 4 months. This pleases me. Part of the reason I let the Snape muse run amuck was to get back into good word flow.

I'm going back to original stuff for a while. I have two original projects vying for priority. My original fantasy novel has literally been sitting on my computer for over a decade, and it needs to be done and out. I have a massive comic collaboration that also needs to be done and out. I want to work on the collab cause others are waiting on it...but the original novel may help provide funding. Which means my artists could get paid upfront...which is probably the only way the collab will ever get done.

Eventually I will get back to writing fanfic again. Victoria will beat me up if I don't. And I'd like to take a stab at a Persephone free 6th year. And of course, I eventually have to get to that Auror training trilogy...maybe another 10 years before I can get that one out.

My nephew is in a regular Mon-Fri school now, and I think this is going to help me create an actual routine and really be productive. Trying to catch up on stuff I've been neglecting, like filing and cleaning my room. Otherwise my immediate goal is to get my PoD stuff to the point where it's earning me a monthly check (starting to get there...it's a small check, but it helps!) , while still carving out a minimum of 4 hours per day for writing.

I do adore young Snape...he's such a geeky nerd, and so less demanding than grown Snape. He lets me use contractions! I think I left him in a happy place. He's not whining about the story ending.

Another Entry in the Okcupid Wall of Shame...

Generally I ignore people like this, but the temptation to snark back is sometimes too strong.

Names removed to protect the ignorant:

Him: A 31 year old virgin?! No way. Those exist?!

I really hope you find what you are looking for but wow...I can't imagine there are many virgins out there.

Me: We're like wizards in Harry Potter. We have our own secret school and everything.

Him: Interesting. Is it the same school they teach you about magical sky fairies and to believe everything you read in a book written by ignorant desert tribesmen 3,000 years ago

Me: You know about the magical sky fairies? Who told?!? @_@

............................

Note that this was a first contact message and the entirity of the conversation. If he is wise, he will now laugh and walk away. If not...he goes on my block list. I really don't get the compulsion to message people with practically zero compatibility with you just to heckle them...then again, that's probably part of why this guy has almost zero compatibility with me.

Severus Snape and the Last Year

So now Snape has hijacked my brain. I both loath and love him. He's the most difficult muse I've ever written for. His actions and dialogue aren't so hard, but I've never had one be so demanding about the prose. He picks on my sentences, ridicules my verb choice, and forces me to reach for a Thesaurus, which I almost never need to do. It's like having my own personal English professor. To top it off he's moody...well, Snape right.

I've had the plans to write Severus Snape and the Last Years for almost a decade now, so it's good to finally get it off my to do pile. But ugh. I wish my brain would behave.

Anyway, he has given me some beautiful sentences, and I really enjoy the young Snape scenes...as an 8 to 13 year old he's so adorkable. I have the first three Chapters up here on Fanfiction.net.

I'm having trouble getting into a good routine...hoping that'll change once my nephew is in school with a regular M-F schedule in August. Need to get stuff done before August. >_>

Good news for the day is that Imbeni will be employed again once the background check goes through. YAY!

FATHER

Imbeni and I played with the idea of "What if Lucius had adopted Harry Potter?" and ran the scenario through all seven years. It was good enough to write down.

I recently showed him the Jim Henson's Storyteller series. So I borrowed it's style so I could write the story quickly rather than more traditional prose format. The style was tricky to get used to at first, but I'm rather in love with it now. Anyway here's the story: http://hogwarts-grads.livejournal.com/842307.html It's fairly PG/PG-13 at most. Gets a little dark at the end, but no worse than the books were. Creepier but less violent.

And yeah, there's Draco/Hermione, but they're not the main thrust of it. Lucius's growing relationship with Harry is kind of sweet in a twisted way...

Not Going to Vanderbilt

Ok, I think I said something on here about applying to Vanderbilt's graduate program. I knew it was a long shot and got back a rejection letter. I spent about 5 minutes feeling disappointed, but then I was kind of glad. It was going to eat up a lot of time.
