Shortcut Pierogis
Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 20 mins Total Time: 30 mins Servings: 4 Yield: 16 pierogis

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions
2 sweet onions
2 tablespoons avocado oil or canola oil

Pierogis
1 (16 ounce) package frozen cheese and potato pierogis
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon avocado oil or canola oil
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Toppings
1/3 cup sour cream
3 strips cooked, crisp bacon, crumbled
3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
chopped fresh parsley or chives
4 fresh lemon wedges

Directions

Trim the ends of the onions, cut in half lengthwise, and peel. Thinly slice the halves vertically from top to bottom.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions to skillet, tossing until well coated. Stir until they start to soften, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook until onions start to brown, 15 to 20 minutes, stirring frequently. If they start to stick to the skillet, add a little water.
Meanwhile, heat butter and oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, add pierogis in a single layer, and cook for about 16 minutes or according to package directions, flipping halfway through. Season with salt and pepper.
Transfer pierogis to a serving plate. Add a dollop of sour cream to each pierogi, top with caramelized onions and crumbled bacon. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and parsley, and serve with lemon wedges.

Cook’s Note
For softer pierogis, you can boil them. Place them in a large pot of boiling water, bring back to a boil, and cook for 3 minutes. Drain, then lightly brown in an oiled skillet for just a few minutes, add toppings, and serve.

I need to just start posting via mobile, even if it's going to be an awkward process at first...

I'm mostly through the stage of grief known as Paperwork and onto the next, which is Phonecalls. As someone who is phone-avoidant on my best executive function days, this is Not Great But I'm Doing It (Slowly). This weekend is Dad's actual burial, and the week after that Mom has her annual? specialist appointment in Cleveland and after that I think I am... mostly in the clear aside from some little details and the stage of grief known as Getting Rid of a Lot of Crap. (I suspect this will invite another round of the laying-on-the-floor-too-sad-to-do-anything grief, which I mostly keep at bay by being too busy. We shall see.)

Free time is still model kits, Gundam and otherwise. I really do mean to post pictures... I'll see what I can do. ^^;;

And between when I started this post a few days ago and now, some sort of plumbing/septic mess has developed which I'll need to investigate once it is daylight and I get a few other things taken care of. Truly, no breaks for me.

Friday Five - theatre

From [community profile] thefridayfive.

1. How often do you attend live theater performances?

Pretty much never, with rare exceptions. I did attend more often in the past (a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away), so I still can claim some theatre experience.

2. Local community theater or professional theater productions?

Professional. (There is such a thing like a local community theatre? Who would bother? I mean, staging plays and performing in them seems to be too much of a hard work to do as a hobby...)

3. Which do you prefer: dramas or musicals?

Eh, comedies? I hope it's ok to draw from my experience of dead filmed theatre performances. Musicals often feel too artificial, and dramas too boring, though I like occasional songs where they make sense. Currently my favourite play is Twelfth Night by London's National Theatre, as seen on YouTube and later, downloaded. There are several fantastic songs, but adding more would be overdoing it.

4. Have you ever participated in a theatrical production, whether acting, singing or tech?

Haha, no.

5. What was the last play or other staged production you attended?

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by Akasaka Theatre in Tokyo, when I was in Japan on vacation a few years ago. It was a lucky accident - I just passed through the neighbourhood and noticed a queue, and the doors were open, and... there were still tickets!! The play was in Japanese, but they gave me a smartphone with English subtitles, which worked very well (anyway I had read the script previously, and was familiar with the plot). Loved it to bits! But mostly for the whole exotic and immersive experience.

cooking vs eating out, Japan edition

Some say that in SE Asia, eating out is cheaper than cooking. I have not been there and cannot judge. Perhaps, if labor is so cheap as to cost more than ingredients, or if the people selling cooked food can get cheaper ingredients than you can?

Some say that it is cheaper in East Asian countries, and now I do have some experience there. My gut reaction is "skeptical, but it may be closer than elsewhere." Certainly it can be cheaper in exchange-rate terms to eat out in Japan, Seoul, or Taipei than in the current US, with calorically decent meals in the $4-5 range or even a bit less. And groceries often feel more expensive, implying a narrower gap.

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

[personal profile] malurette
Titre : La petite fille orageuse
Auteure : Pauline Delmais
Langue : français
Type : album jeunesse
Genre : poétique ?

1ère parution : 2026
Édition : Paulsen
Format :

Pretty picture book about a little girl waiting for a thunderstorm during an already too hot summer.

Our new challenge is our eighty-eighth:

AMNESTY

During amnesty challenges, you can post works for any of the challenges we've had to date: ( Complete list of prompts )

See the Community Report for a sortable list of prompts.
Both reports have a random "Any Challenge" button, and the Creator Report also has a random "Unfilled Challenge" button.

Of course, you're always welcome to post multiple works to any challenge if you finish them before the challenge closes, but that isn't always possible. So dust off those unfinished works and half-formed ideas -- now is the time!

In amnesty rounds, include the challenge you are posting for in the subject line of your post (eg, Pants: Heated Rivalry: Podfic: Pantsless).

Each work created for this challenge should be posted as a new entry to the comm. Posting starts now and continues up until the challenge ends at 4pm Pacific Time on Sunday, 1 November. No sign-up required.

Mods will tag your work for fandom. When you've posted entries to three consecutive challenges, you will earn a name tag, and we'll go back and tag all your previous entries with your name.

All kinds of fanworks in all fandoms are welcome. Please have a look at our guidelines before you play. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact a mod. And if you have any suggestions for future challenges, you can leave them in the comments of this post.

You can view stats for [community profile] fan_flashworks entries and search and filter them via the Community Report and Creator Report. See our FAQ post for more details. Please let us know if you have any trouble accessing the reports.

Also, keep an eye out for the next [community profile] ffw_social post, which will go up in the next couple of days. If you haven't joined the comm yet, it's never too late to come and check it out. (Remember, posts are locked, which means you have to join to see them.)
