NOTES: Over on tumblr, liliofthevaley asked for Kate/Henry when I put out an open call for graphics/ficlets. The accompanying graphic is Here.

One of the things Henry had grown used to was that without fail people just tended to assume that Kate was Will’s girlfriend. It should have bothered him, and it kind of did at first, until he realized that when she told them ‘No’ she also made up some sort of excuse as to why she wasn’t his girlfriend.

I think his boyfriend might have a problem with that.

Dude, he’s married. What? Yes that matters!

He has a special relationship with animals. Think about it. No. There you go.

So really, it didn’t bother Henry at all when people asked her that. Sure, it bothered him that people always assumed that, but he was more than okay with letting Will be on the other end of that game of Kate’s. So when the girl at the bank started flirting with him, he really should have known that Kate was going to do something. Especially when she swung her arm over his shoulders in greeting and asked, “Who’s your friend, Hank?”

Immediately he closed his eyes and willed the girl not to ask what he knew she was going to ask.

“Is this your girlfriend?”

He opened his eyes long enough to see her wrinkle her nose and respond with the predictable: “No.”

And then he closed his eyes again as if that would prepare him for whatever very embarrassing thing was going to come out of Kate’s mouth.

“I’m his fiancée.”

His eyes flew open. What? Huh? What? That was… new.

Kate held out her hand to the girl, flashing a diamond ring that looked older than they were. Actually that ring looked really familiar. That looked like- “Kate…”

She batted her eyelashes at him, and adopted that sugary sweet innocent look that she only used when she was being anything but innocent. “Oh , Sweetpea.” And there was the higher pitched acting voice she used. Oh crap. “I know you didn’t want everyone knowing, but how could I resist?” And then before he could stop her, she grabbed him by the chin, and kissed him firmly on the mouth.

Dazed he stood there for a moment, collecting his bearings. He could have sworn that she wore sedating chapstick or something. Because every time she kissed him, it left his head reeling. And she always did it for a reason. Wait. What was the reason? Maybe it was just karma. This had to be karma for all the times he laughed when she did this to Will. Except- Crap. The reason! What was she talking to the girl about?

“We’re thinking a June wedding. Maybe on the beach. We’re not sure yet. He wanted to do the whole Vegas wedding thing, but that’s so cliché. No one does that anymore.”

That was it. She was having way too much fun with this. “Nice meeting you.” He forced out before grabbing Kate by the waist and dragging her away from the girl. He waited until they were outside of the bank until: “Dude. Not cool! Not cool at all. And, dude, Magnus is going to kill you when she realizes that you took her ring out of the safety deposit box.”

Kate rolled her eyes and pushed him off her. “Dude, what did you think we were doing here?”

“Well, it’s a bank. I kind of figured you were taking your own money out.”

Kate just laughed.

He rolled his eyes. “C’mon, Thelma.”

She stood there fiddling with the ring. “Hang on. I’m trying to get this thing off.”

Henry watched her for a moment. “Really? You had your fun. Can we go eat now?” He whined out, staring longingly at the pizza parlor on the other side of the strip mall.

“Dude. It won’t come off.”

Henry started laughing. “Karma.” Yeah. It was totally about karma. Still laughing, he grabbed her hand and started dragging her towards the holiness that was Benny’s Pizzeria. “This is your own fault and I’m hungry.”

“So you’re just gonna let everyone there think we’re engaged?”

He stopped for a second and pretended to think about it before continuing on towards Benny’s. “Yeah. Pretty much.” He shrugged. “It’s not like I plan on announcing to the entire place that you decided we were engaged. I’m starving.”

“I did not-” She sighed. “You know what? Fine. You’re paying.”

Henry laughed as he held the door open for her. “I had a choice?”

And when the cashier commented on her ring and he broke his original promise and announced to the entire bar that they were engaged? Totally worth the elbow to his ribs. However it wasn’t worth the hour long discussion with Magnus as to how pizza sauce managed to get caught in the claw of the engagement ring given to her by one of the Kennedys (he still wasn’t sure which one) not to mention the super glue.
