lots of firsts
So I was downtown anyway yesterday and stopped by the Portland Running Store on Morrison on the way home. And I must confess, there was a piece of me waiting for them to take one look at my nearly 300 lbs and laugh me out of the store. But they were quite nice, and I wound up with a pair of Asics. Then I got cheap and went to KMart to pick up some pants and socks and whatnot. ;)
So today was the first workout of the Couch to 5K. During the first jogging interval, my brain was all "omg who the hell am I kidding, I'll never be able to do this, I can't run, I'll never make 60 seconds... wait, it's already over???" The first couple of intervals were pretty good. These random guys passed me in their car during the third or fourth interval and one of them yelled "harder!" or something like that out the car window. I still can't figure out if they were a) being encouraging to the random fat chick who is clearly taking measures to be healthier, or b) mocking the random fat chick who has the audacity to pretend to be able to run. Therefore, I choose to believe a. ;) After the 5th, I had to pause the podcast and take a longer recovery, and from that time on my recovery walks were quite a bit slower than they had been. But still - after that 5th inverval, I really wasn't sure I'd even be able to complete the workout. The lengthened walking interval was only maybe twice as long as it should have been, and was the only pause I took from the program, and I did manage to run through each running interval, though there were a few where I was SURE I'd never make it to him saying it was time to walk again. I chose to run a loop that I've been known to walk from time to time - it's a good chunk longer, took about 4 more songs on my iPod to get home after the podcast was over, but a little extra cool-down walking never hurt anyone. ;) Plus, that means I can keep using this loop for a while even as I increase my distance, which is nice.
Of course, that's assuming I'll be ABLE to increase my distance. Part of me is now convinced that I'll never be able to do more than the current interval training. I keep pointing out that it was convinced I'd never be able to finish the intervals and then telling it I don't want to hear another word. It's not listening, but I'm used to that.
This workout KICKED MY ASS. I've already downed 2 emergen-cs since I got home (had a trainer who swore by them for muscle recovery, years back when I was in training to walk the Breast Cancer 3-Day) and a full quart of water. But here's the thing: I NEVER thought I could run. Ever. At all. And you know what?
I DID IT!!!!! That deserves some mention right there, I think.
