William C. Sturtevant

William Curtis Sturtevant (* 26. Juli 1926 in Morristown/New Jersey; † 2. März 2007 in Rockville/Maryland) war ein US-amerikanischer Ethnologe und Hochschullehrer.

Leben und Wirken

William C. Sturtevant, ein Sohn des amerikanischen Genetikers Alfred Sturtevant, studierte Ethnologie an der University of California, Berkeley und legte dort 1949 die Bachelorprüfung ab. Er setzte dann sein Studium an der Yale University fort und promovierte im Jahre 1955 zum Ph.D. Seit 1950 führte er zahlreiche ethnologische Feldforschungen bei dem Indianervolk der Seminolen durch, ab 1952 auch bei den Irokesen. Außerdem hielt er sich zu Forschungen in Myanmar (1955 und 1963/64) auf. Nach kürzerer Tätigkeit als Assistent an der Yale University und am Yale Peabody Museum war er von 1955 bis 1965 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Bureau of American Ethnology (Smithsonian Institution). Im Jahre 1965 wechselte er als Kurator an das National Museum of Natural History, wo er bis zu seinem Eintritt in den Ruhestand tätig war. Außerdem lehrte er (im Nebenamt) von 1974 bis 1989 an der Johns Hopkins University. Gastprofessuren hatte er 1967/68 und 1986/87 an der University of Oxford inne. Sturtevant arbeitete in den Vorständen bzw. als Präsident mehrerer wissenschaftlicher Fachgesellschaften. Im Jahre 1996 wurde er von der Brown University mit der Ehrendoktorwürde ausgezeichnet. Besonders bekannt wurde William C. Sturtevant durch die Herausgabe des umfangreichen "Handbook of North American Indians".
