I just drove by an old desk in the trash. Someone had written "Korn" on one of the drawers. The "K" was backwards, of course.

The Constables [30 Sep 2003|02:18pm]
The doctor found himself in bed, under a large piece of rice paper. The room was dark and silent as it usually was at night. Night often coincided with the doctor's sleep. Soon enough, he turned his head to the horn on the night stand. He often used this for communication. As he looked at it, it rang. Because of this the doctor grimaced.

He eventually rose out of bed and but the phone to the side of his head. Minutes passed as the doctor sat in silence, hearing nothing, saying nothing. He grew more tired.

"This is inappropriate," he began. "I know your motives, and I've seen you around. Round about town."

The doctor heard a cough.

"Get that looked at. No. Scratch that. Choke on your bile, bottle-twister."

With that the doctor snipped the wires attaching the horn to his wall. He looked upon it all with the satisfaction that a terse conversation gives one. He descended the window and was soon about town. Main boulevards and side streets were for the most part clear (though a woman remained in front of a window watching the marches, her skin now green).

The doctor thought of his feral youth and how he would roam the plains, of machinery and pulmonary systems. He could sense that the constable with his chattering teeth and bull-whip was nearby. An owl hissed. The doctor walked on, knowing a new constable eyed him with every alley he passed and every canal he crossed.

A small sculpture park startled him, placed in the middle of an otherwise busy street as it was. The doctor frowned upon it.

"I have little to no time to waste on the likes of you," he asserted to a silent sculpture. "Your kind has nothing to offer me. Nothing but missed sleep and disenchantment." He thrashed it with a cobblestone. "Dirty, flimsy, liar," he cried along with other words.

A set of constables made themselves visible. Stepping halfway out of the shadows, one cracked a whip.

"Very well," said the doctor in resignation.

Soon the doctor was in his room. He dragged out the coffin and entered.

"Very well indeed," he stated as sleep closed his eyes.
