Early life and education
[edit]Mansour Abdulreda Hussain Almail was born in 1947 in the Sharq district of Kuwait City.[1] He studied at Al Siddiq School and obtained a diploma from the Teachers' Institute, beginning his career as a physical education teacher with the Ministry of Education during the 1960s.[1]
He competed internationally in gymnastics and later qualified as an international judge, eventually rising to head judge with the International Gymnastics Federation.[1]
Career
[edit]Business interests
[edit]Almail founded the Almail Group, which began trading in Kuwait in the early 1970s.[4] Its commercial activities included general trading, contracting, transport, consumer goods, and industrial services.[4] The business continued the commercial enterprise of his father, Abdulridha Almail, who had worked in transport and trade since the 1930s.[4]
Radio
[edit]In 1969, Almail joined the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information in the radio sector, where he established and headed the sports programming department at Radio Kuwait.[2] He served as controller of sports programming at the ministry from 1985 to 1994.[1] In 1994, he founded the Youth and Sports Radio station and served as its first director, before being appointed assistant undersecretary for radio affairs in 1996.[1]
Print journalism
[edit]Almail began working in sports journalism in the early 1970s and was a member of the Kuwait Journalists Association.[1] He contributed to and managed sports desks for several Kuwaiti publications, including Al Rai Al Aam, Al Qabas, Mirat al Umma, and Al Imtiyaz.[5][6] Regionally, he served as the first editor of the sports section for Al Taawun al Khaleeji and later launched Dunya al Shabab wal Riyada as its editor-in-chief.[1]
Coverage of sporting events
[edit]Almail led Kuwaiti sports media delegations covering domestic, Gulf, Arab, and international athletic competitions.[7] His commentary and reporting focused primarily on Kuwaiti football, including coverage of the Kuwait Premier League and the Kuwait national football team, alongside collaborative regional broadcasts across the Gulf.[7]
Teaching and academia
[edit]From 1994 to 1996, Almail served as a seconded assistant professor at the College of Basic Education in Kuwait.[1] During this period, he also acted as an external supervisor for master's and doctoral candidates in physical education.[1]
Recognition
[edit]Following his death, the Ministry of Information named a radio studio the "Mansour Almail Studio" in his honor.[1] The Kuwait Olympic Committee also included him on its official list of ten pioneering figures in the history of Kuwaiti sports media.[1]
Commemorative awards and tournaments
[edit]Ahead of the 16th Arabian Gulf Cup in 2003, the organizing committee established the "Late Mansour Almail Award for Best Journalist".[3] At the conclusion of the tournament in January 2004, the honor was awarded to Qatari journalist Abdullah Al Marri.[8]
In October 2005, the Ministry of Information and the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) organized the inaugural media Ramadan football tournament competing for the "Late Mansour Almail Cup", establishing an annual tradition.[9][10][11]
