Lion's head at Button’s Coffee House, London. This was installed by the "Guardian" a short-lived newspaper founded in 1713 by Richard Steele with Joseph Addison, Thomas Tickell, Alexander Pope, and Ambrose Philips. Lion's head designed by William Hogarth based on an imitation from Italy. The head is open wide to take in letters and papers from correspondents which would be digested for the use of the public and published. An emblem of knowledge and action. Under the lion's head was a motto - “Servantur magnis isti Cervicibus ungues: Non nisi delictâ pascitur !!! e ferâ.” see |
