North Lakhimpur (/ˌlækɪmˈpʊər/ LAK-im-POOR) is a city and a municipal board in Lakhimpur district in the Indian state of Assam, about 394 kilometres (245 mi) northeast of Guwahati. It is the district headquarters of Lakhimpur district. North Lakhimpur is also the name of the subdivision of Lakhimpur district where North Lakhimpur town is located.

Etymology

[edit]

The name Lakhimpur is derived from Lakshmipur, the former name of North Lakhimpur. According to the Assam District Gazetteers, the town was named after Lakshminarayana, a Chutia king who ruled in the early fifteenth century. A land-grant inscription dated 1401 CE records Lakshminarayana's donation of land to Brahmins on the western bank of the Subansiri River, near present-day North Lakhimpur.[4]

When Lakhimpur district was constituted by the East India Company in 1838, Lakhimpur was selected as its first headquarters. Sarbeswar Barua therefore argued that the district subsequently took its name from the town, citing an 1839 sanad issued from North Lakhimpur that bears the district seal and an English note of the Principal Assistant Commissioner referring to Lakhimpur district.[4]

There are other historical accounts which show that a king named Laksminarayan ruled over the area, now included in the eastern part of Lakhimpur district, who during the 14th–15th century A.D. made a land grant dated Saka 1323 (A.D. 1401). The land was donated in the village of Bakhana on the western bank of the Subansiri. His capital was at Sadhayapuri, to be identified with Sadiya, the capital of Chutiya kings. This king Laksminarayan is likely to have built a town in his kingdom and named it after him. Sri Sarbeswar Barua of North Lakhimpur strongly believes that the district took its name from the town of Lakhimpur (later known as North Lakhimpur), originally selected as its headquarters, when Lakhimpur district was first formed in 1838 by the East India Company. He points out that this is known from the original seal of the district, as found in a sanad (manuscript) dated 1839 granted to the late Maheswar Sarma Bapu Barua and the note written by the Principal Assistant Commissioner in English at the top of the sanad just below the seal, where the name of Lakhimpur district is found written. The sanad was issued from North Lakhimpur. From this, Sri Barua concludes that the name of the district was derived from its first headquarters, viz., Lakhimpur.
