Youssouf Tata Cissé (4 March 1935 – 10 December 2013) was a Malian ethnologist and historian, a specialist in the oral literature of Mali and the author of numerous works on the subject. He was a researcher at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and taught at the Sorbonne.

Biography

In 1973, at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris, he defended a doctoral thesis supervised by Germaine Dieterlen, entitled Un récit initiatique de chasse Boli-Nyanan. He devoted much of his life to the discovery, study and preservation of knowledge transmitted through oral tradition in West Africa, working in cooperation with Wa Kamissoko, a Malian nwâra (a specialist in traditions) and djali (griot).
