Lawyer and legislator.

Son of Howard Putnam and Nancy Elizabeth Palmer Anderson.

Educated in Halifax County Public Sshools,attended National Business College,Roanoke,Virginia and received the B.A.degree in 1940 from the College of William and Mary,in 1948 he received the LL.B degree from T.C.Williams School of Law of the University of Richmond.A member of Sigma Pi and Delta Theta Phi.


On February 28,1941,he married Mildred Graham Webb of LaCrosse,Virginia.


After he graduated from the College of William and Mary ,he was with the advertising department of the Richmond News Leader;a salesman for the Southern Biscuit Company;a buyer for the Hercules Power Company.


After law school he was a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.


Military Record

Commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy Reserve in 1942 and served as Communications Officer in the Armed Guard in the Atlantic and Pacific,discharged in 1946 as Lieutenant (S.G.)


Entered politics as a member of the Halifax School Board,elected in 1958 to the House of Delegates and served seven terms,moving to the Senate in 1972,where he stayed for twenty years.

Howard Palmer Anderson, age 85, of 1071 Mountain Road, Halifax, died November 1 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Anderson was born in Halifax County on May 25, 1915, the son of Howard Putman Anderson and Elizabeth Palmer Anderson and was married to Mildred Graham Webb Anderson. He was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church and served in the House of Delegates and Senate. Survivors include three sons, Howard P. Anderson Jr., John W. Anderson and wife, Diane D. and Rev. Dr. David Traynham Anderson and wife, Mary, all of Richmond; eight grandchildren, Evan T. Anderson of Blacksburg, Elizabeth Breece Anderson and Nathan W. Anderson, both of Harrisonburg, Emily E.G. Anderson, Claire F.C. Anderson, Matthew T. Anderson, Meaghan B. Anderson and Alexa P. Anderson, all of Richmond; and one brother, John V. Anderson and wife, Alice of Halifax. A memorial service for Mr. Anderson will be held November 4 at 11 a.m. at Beth Car Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Stewart and Dr. David Anderson conducting the service. A private family burial will take place in Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church Cemetery at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening, November 3 from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home.
