Os Phocinae (focinos ou focas do norte) é unha subfamilia de focas que se distribúen nos mares do hemisferio norte que rodean o Holártico, e tamén inclúe unha especie confinada no lago Baikal (Pusa sibirica), que é o único pinnípede de auga doce.[1] O que as distingue dos outros fócidos da subfamilia Monachinae é a presenza e garras ben desenvolvidas na parte frontal das aletas traseiras.[2][3] Os Phocinae divídense en tres tribos existentes: Erignathini (representados só pola foca barbuda Erignathus barbatus), Cystophorini (tamén monotípica representada só pola foca de capelo Cystophora cristata) e Phocini (representada polo resto das especies superviventes da subfamilia). As especies de Erignathini e Cystophorini teñen 34 cromosomas, mentres que as da tribo Phocini teñen 32.[2]
