Subject: NSF FY 2006 Funding
Representatives Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) and Rush Holt (D-NJ) are sponsoring a "Dear Colleague" letter to Representative Frank Wolf (R-VA), Chair of the House Appropriations Science, State, Justice, and Commerce Subcommittee, recommending an increased funding level of $6.1 billion for the National Science Foundation (NSF) in FY 2006. The Administration's budget requests a 2.4 percent increase for NSF in FY 2006 for a total of $5.6 billion; however, because of a 3.3 percent reduction in funding for FY 2005, the proposed FY 2006 increase actually represents a funding level of 1 percent less than the FY 2004 funding level.
The ASM has submitted recommendations to Congress for increased funding for NSF. The ASM statement is available at http://www.asm.org/Policy/index.asp?bid=34335. Please contact your Representative and request that they sign on to Representative Ehlers' and Representative Holt's letter to Chairman Wolf supporting a funding level of $6.1 billion for NSF in FY 2006.
You can contact your Representative electronically through ASM's Legislative Communications page at http://capwiz.com/asmusa/home/, where you can access the "Dear Colleague" letter and where a sample letter is provided, or you may write your own letter.
If you have any questions, contact Whitney Tull in the Office of Public Affairs at wtull@asmusa.org.
