Plot: The Longest Day for Peter Hazel and Collie's Mill
The story begins in Camberwick Green at the ancient Collie's Mill. The Windy Miller is proud to be the latest in a long line of millers. His father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and many generations before him cared for the old windmill.
Collie's Mill is over 500 years old. Long ago, before it became a windmill, the site was an old barn. The mill has survived through the centuries and is still standing, with its sails turning in the breeze.
Peter Hazel, the postman, visits the mill and talks with the Windy Miller. He asks if the Windy Miller would ever sell the windmill. The Windy Miller is horrified and furious at the idea.
"Sell Collie's Mill? Never!" he says. The mill is his family's history and he promises to keep it running.
A pair of workmen arrive in a lorry and ask the Windy Miller again if he wants to sell. The Windy Miller becomes very angry and refuses. The workmen realise how much the mill means to him and drive away.
Peter says goodbye and tries to continue his postal round. He then visits Mrs Dingle at the post office. He learns that the building was once a dairy in Edwardian times, and that the new dairy is now owned by Mr Tripp the milkman.
Mrs Dingle shows Peter an old painting of the building when it was still a dairy. Then Mrs Honeyman arrives and begins arguing, as she often does.
Peter waits and waits while the two women talk. He becomes more and more annoyed because he has deliveries to finish. The argument lasts for hours, and Peter cannot get on with his work.
By the time Peter finally leaves, it is midnight. He is furious because he should have finished his round at 4 pm.
Peter looks at his watch and realises it is now 2 am. He rushes to finish his last deliveries.
At last, Peter reaches Dr Mopp's house and rings the doorbell. Dr Mopp answers wearing his pyjamas and dressing gown, surprised to see Peter delivering post in the middle of the night.
Peter explains that it has been a very long day. Dr Mopp smiles and tells him he should get some rest when he has finished.
The story ends with Peter completing his unusual delivery round, while Collie's Mill continues turning in the wind, still standing proudly after more than 500 years.
