Sam can’t believe a word of it (he can).
None if it can be true (it is).
He was the result of a program expansion experiment to give Basics the ability to reproduce without User intervention. Though in this case, Flynn had to use his own digital DNA to give Sam life. He had gestated inside of Clu, inside his coding. Clu was holding his disc in front of him, hands gentling grasping.
“You came from here, Sam. I carried you inside of me before you were strong enough to emerge. I suppose its not all that different from how Users make children.” He smiled softly at the boy.
“Okay, lets just say that I believe you at all… mom.” Sam still can’t quite believe the radical story he was just told. “Why don’t I remember you?”
“You do, Sam. Its just buried to deep for you to get to it. Take out your disc and access your memories. Its in there. I’m there.” said the regal program matter of factly.
Sam humored Clu. He took his disc in hand and called forth the memory file. He rewound further and further, past the point of remembering off hand to things he was reminded of in an instant.
One memory, so far down the line that it played like an old, worn out VHS tape, was displayed before Sam’s eyes.
He was chasing his father. Or was it Clu? They were on a beach, a dark beach where the water almost glowed. His hands were stretched out in front of him, trying to catch Clu/father. Clu/father was running backwards, giving playful taunts as he jog/walked away from the boy.
“C’mon, Sam. You gotta catch me. You can’t catch me.” he was laughing, playing with him. It was a game.
“Mama!”
Sam gripped his disc tighter, trying with all his might not to let his emotions spill over.
In the memory, Clu allowed himself to fall backwards, enabling Sam to over take him and crawl all over him, tickling him. They were laughing together, cuddling and hugging like a mother and child should.
“Love you mommy!” said Sam. Clu went stiff for a second, the Clu in the memory and the Clu here and now.
“I love you too, Sam.”
The memory bled into the one after, one with Sam being held by some one else. Some one with a glowing symbol on his chest. He saw Clu and his dad arguing. The words are garbled, indiscernible. This other person takes Sam outside, holding him in his lap as he gnaws on a baton.
Sam swears that face looks familiar….
Uncle Alan?
The feed stops, receding back into the disc. Sam stands there for a little while, trying to ingest all he had just seen. He wants to think that Clu manipulated him some how. That at some point his disc was altered to include these memories. But logic throws those theories out the window.
Clu takes his own disc and rewinds his memories, replaying that same scene from his point of view. Sam sees himself, a wobbly legged toddler with shaggy dark blonde hair, laughing as he chased Clu along the dark beach.
He stops the feed before it can get to the argument afterwards. Clu stows his disc and takes Sam’s hands in his.
“I couldn’t lie to you if I wanted to, Sam. I am your mother. And I’m so happy you’ve come back to me.” At last Clu’s voice gives way to some of the joy and ache he feels.
Sam is once against stunned when the program takes him into his arms. He doesn’t know what to believe anymore. Was he a hybrid? Was he human? Suddenly none of that seemed to matter to him.
These arms that held him felt familiar now. Everything about Clu felt familiar, felt right. Sam was hugging him back now, grasping at the billowing coat like a blanket.
“Mama…” his voice breaks.
“Yes… I’m your mama…”
They just hold each other for some time, a reunion long since over due. Finally Clu releases his hold, looking at Sam with big, hopeful eyes.
“We have much to do, Sam. Now that I have you back, all my plans will finally come together. Everything is finally coming together.” he put an arm around Sam’s shoulders, guiding him to the throne room of his ship.
Sam watched as Clu showed off his perfect system to him. The pride in the dictators voice was evident. San was indeed impressed, but also worried. None of what he had seen indicated any of what Clu had achieved was done peacefully. He wanted to love his newly discovered mother, but Sam feared Clu was the digital equivalent to Adolf Hitler.
“This is all… so amazing, mom.” Sam said, meaning what he said. “But I’ve gotta know. All those programs in the disc wars? Are they really dead?”
Clu shock his head in that way a person does when someone says something obvious. Or stupid.
“They were rebels, deviants, strays. They have no place in our perfect system, Sam. They may as well have been useful and entertain the loyal masses.”
Sam flinched and the cold cruelty of those words.
“And just what makes the ‘loyal masses’ so loyal?”
“To put it simply, they follow the rules. Those who do not, well… the Games need all the combatants it can hold.”
“What if I broke a rule?” Sam swallowed, afraid of the answer.
Clu’s head turned sharply to Sam, eyes confused and hurt.
“Why would you go against me, Sam?” His hands found the young mans shoulders again, the grip a little to close to painful. “I’m your mother. Why would you disobey me?”
“I wouldn’t, mom. I promise.” Sam clenched his gut, trying to suppress the growing fear in him.
Clu smiled again, releasing Sam’s shoulders and clasping his hands in front of him. His eyes looked up and down the young Flynn’s body, finding something not to his liking.
“Those colors don’t suit you, Sam.” Clu reached out and touched the line of circuits on Sam’s chest. Instantly, the white began to change to the golden orange of his mother. The line on the left of his chest morphed into a few hollow bars.
“My little prince…” Clu said as he took his hand away, looking at his handy work.
Sam looked at his new appearance, feeling a bit strange but not protesting the change. That might be a rule Sam best not break. Sam felt two of Clu’s fingers under his chin, the program tilting his head up to look into his eyes. That warmth Sam had seen in them when Clu first confessed his maternity was back.
For a moment he felt safe.
Clu leaned forward and pressed his lips to Sam’s forehead, a loving kiss bestowed upon a child from his mother.
“We’d best get back to business, then. This reunion is missing an important member.”
Sam’s heart leapt in his chest. Dad?! How could he have forgotten the reason he wound up here in the first place?
“Do you know where he is?” Clu shook his head slowly.
“Sadly, no. We haven’t seen each other in… a long time.” Clu’s shoulders sank a little. “I was hoping my little message might bring someone here worth his attention. I was lucky it was you, Sam.”
“Why aren’t you guys talking?” Sam can’t help but wonder why, in all the years his dad’s been here, that they’ve been avoiding each other?
“That’s a long story, Sam. One best saved for another time. For now, lets rest. We have much to do.”
“But, mom-”
“That’s enough, Sam.”
The harsh cold Clu spoke with stopped Sam’s word dead. Clu’s faced hardened into barely suppressed rage before changing back to warm and gentle.
“I’ll tell you in good time, son. For now, you should rest.” Clu tapped on the arm rest of his throne and the seat folded down into a large bed. “You may use my chambers for as long as you need. I’ll see to it that no one disturbs you. I’m sorry, but my ship was built with company in mind.”
“That’s okay. I’ll be fine here.” Sam settled down on the black bed, surprised by how comfortable it felt despite the outfit he wore.
“Sam?”
“Yeah, mom?”
“Please don’t think me informal for asking, but… may I hold you? Until you fall asleep?”
Sam did think that strange for all of 2 seconds. How could that be any stranger than finding out your mother is a computer program?
“Sure, mom.”
The smile on Clu’s face could light the Grid like the sun. Slowly, almost reverently, he climbed into bed next to his son, wrapping an arm around Sam’s torso and nuzzling into his neck again.
Any part of Sam’s mind that would be screaming at how wrong this felt never spoke up.
Sam was soothed to sleep by his mothers breathing. He didn’t think a program would need to breath. Or have something comparable to a heart beat.
His dreams was flooded with old memories long forgotten. He was in Clu’s arms, perhaps as a infant or toddler. He could hear Clu’s voice singing to him, sweet and low.
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are gray.
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you.
Please don’t take my Sammy away.”
Sam giggled lightly at the use of his name in the old song. Clu kissed him on the cheek before releasing his hold on him. Sam can’t make himself sit up and beg his mother to stay, not form the words.
Sam wakes up some unknown time later, finding himself alone in the throne room. He can’t stop a few tears from slipping through his eyes, that song still fresh in his minds ear.
