Clu still lays with some long after the boy falls asleep. He can’t make himself leave Sam’s side, afraid to loose him again. He sits up, watching as Sam breathes slowly, his hands folded next to his face as he lays on his side.
Clu gentle brushes the boys sun bleached hair, feeling its coarseness even through the thick gloves. He misses the dark brown it used to be. Like his own hair.
He sighs, mourning the time lost between them. What could have been had Sam been raised on the Grid? Clu would have raised him to be the perfection he sought. The Grid would be his to rule one day when Clu tired of it. And Flynn would have no say in it.
Clu takes his hand away from Sam’s hair to clench it into a hard fist. ‘Damn you, Kevin Flynn.’ he thought. Flynn had no idea what Clu had gone through after Sam was taken.
The admin program swore it wouldn’t affect him in the least. After all, it was only an experiment, like so many he and Flynn tried to build and improve the Grid. He had been miserable the entire time he carried Sam. He needed energy more often than before, his sleep cycles were erratic and often nonexistent, and his belly grew to accommodate the growing line of code inside him.
Removing Sam was an even worse experience.
Clu remembered trembling in pain, clutching to Tron as Flynn removed Sam line by line, bit by bit from his ID disc. Clu prayed for deresolution. That had to be better than this.
Above his own cries of pain, Clu heard something else. A loud, high screech that made something inside him lock up in worry.
“Clu… it’s a boy.” Tron had said.
Clu untangled himself from Tron’s arms, looking behind himself at Flynn and the tiny blue bundle he held in his arms. He reached for it, feeling the soft material of the blanket before the equally soft skin of the new born. Flynn angled the baby so Clu could better see him. He was tiny, pink and wrinkled. His eyes were shut and his fingers gripping and grasping for something. His cries had subsided only a little, but still echoed through the Grid.
Clu thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
“What are you gonna name him?” Flynn asked to the new mother.
Clu drew an absolute blank. The boy’s name could be ‘sequential access memory’ for all he knew.
That little light clicked on in Clu’s mind.
“Sam…” he said breathlessly, taking the baby in his arms gently.
“Sam.” Flynn rolled the name over on his tongue. “I like it. Sam Flynn. Got a nice ring to it.”
The three of them basked in the new life they had made together. Tron was made Sam’s official godfather on the Grid, Alan being the same for the User world.
Clu was confused beyond all reason. Despite all the misery and embarrassment he had gone through to give Sam life, looking at him now; Clu no longer felt like that. Something about this had changed him, and Clu was grateful for it.
At least he had been until Sam was taken to the User world.
Clu tried to convince himself that it was for the best. Sam belonged with his father in his world. After all, he was just an experiment.
None of that eased the pain of being without his greatest creation. After Sam’s visits stopped all together, Clu got desperate. He tried repeating the experiment. He acquired some of Tron’s code without his knowledge, fully intending to give life to another child.
Cycles passed and nothing came of it but pain and anguish. His own code kept trying to reject Tron’s, and over and over again did Clu reinforce it. One day he passed out on his bedroom floor, a sharp pain piercing his abdomen. He awoke in Tron’s arms some time later. Clu ran a self diagnostic. He had rebooted and purged Tron’s code from his system. There would be no child.
Clu wept the hardest he ever had or since. His room felt the rage of a mother denied, destroying everything therein. Tron came to check on Clu later that cycle, horrified by what he found.
Clu begged the security program not to tell Flynn. He couldn’t bear to be seen as imperfect in the Creators eyes.
Clu leans down to kiss his son gently on his face, finding the skin just as soft as he remembers. He slowly rises off the bed and leaves the throne room. So much to do, and finally, it could all be accomplished.
Kevin Flynn would pay for taking his baby from him.

Sam woke up not long after Clu had left, the spot where his mother lay still warm. He had needed that power nap to recharge his synapses. All of this still blew his mind a little. He was half program/half human. His mother was a program created in his father image to create the perfect system, and he was taken to live with his father not long after he was born.
His later memories began to feel like a dream. Jordan Canas wasn’t his real mother? But she treated him like she truly was. He mourned her when she died. Now he learned it was a lie.
Sam let his head hang slack from his shoulders, the weight of it all making his cranium a bit to heavy. He needed answers, and he was pretty sure Clu wasn’t going to give him any until he felt like it.
He was brought out of his thoughts by a soft, chirping sound. A doorbell, maybe?
“Uh, come in.” Sam called.
A tall, thin man with a large visor on his head came walking in, carrying a thin clip board like device in hand.
“Hello, sir.” he said, his voice having that slight computerized sound like the other programs he had met. “I’ve been instructed to attend to whatever needs you may have. So please, don’t hesitate to ask.”
Sam stands up and faces the program. He was slightly taller than Sam, pale and almost feminine in his bodily design. The program looked at Sam reverently, like he was in the presence of real royalty, or a deity.
“I’m okay right now, so don’t worry about it, um…”
“Jarvis, sir.”
“Jarvis. Okay. Where are we?”
“Over the Lightcycle Arena. We’re about to land and initiate a race in honor of your arrival. It was your mothers idea.” Jarvis beamed at that last part.
“Race, huh? Now that’s what I call a welcome home present.” Sam put his hands on his hips and swayed a little, more than excited for his gift.
“If you’ll follow me, sir. Your mother asked me to bring you to him if you were awake.”
“Sure thing. And hey, my names’ Sam. I’m not old enough to be a ‘sir’ just yet.”
Jarvis was a little taken aback by Sam’s casualness. It was something he certainly was not used to.
Sam followed Jarvis out of the throne room and into the commander center, spying Clu as he looked over some data pads handed to him by another program.
“Your Excellency. Our prince has awoken.” said Jarvis with a bit of theatrics.
Clu smiled and gave the pad back to the waiting program. He walked over to Sam and swept him into his arms.
“Sam, its good that you’re awake. I have a surprise for you.”
“You mean the lights cycle races? Jarvis told me all about it.”
Clu’s smile went dead cold in nothing flat. His eyes went to Jarvis, burning holes right into his ID disc.
“S-sir, forgive me. I was so anxious… I just-”
“Jarvis. Come here.”
The visored program trembled but obeyed the command. When he got close enough, Clu’s hand wrapped around Jarvis’ throat, thumb pressing down hard on his wind pipe (or the program equivalent).
“You ruined my surprise, Jarvis. I think you own my son an apology.”
Sam watched with terror in his belly once more. “Mom, its okay. Really. Please stop it. Its okay.”
“It isn’t, Sam. I wanted this to be a surprise, but Jarvis is a talkative program when you give him even the slightest leeway. Isn’t that right, Jarvis?” Clu’s voice stayed steady and cold the entire time, never getting at the rage his grip obviously gave away.
“Y-es, s-” he can’t finish with his energy being cut off like this. Jarvis’ eyes turn to Sam, begging silently.
“Mom, please stop!”
Clu lingered for a moment longer, then released Jarvis, letting the program drop to the floor on his knees, gasping to regain his composure.
“I believe he’s learned his lesson. Now then,” Clu clapped his hands in front of him. “, we’d best prepare fore the race.”
The luminary turned and left Jarvis on the floor, still coughing hard. Sam knelt down to help the program up, only to be flinched away like he had a disease. Sam pulled away from Jarvis, worried for him but unwilling to frighten him further.
“You ha- *cough* ad best go now.” Jarvis got up on his feet and exited the ship, followed by Sam and a group of other programs.
Sam was seriously starting to reconsider this entire situation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sam couldn’t do this. Not this. Killing programs for survival was one thing. For sport was something completely different and against everything he believed in.
He could hear the crowds shock and confusion when he was saved a blue program from one of his own team mates. The program thanked him by cutting off a red guard that tried to move in for the kill.
Sam did everything he would to help the Basics, but sadly the sentries were more experienced, more ruthless, than Sam could handle.
At last it was down to him and Clu.
“Sam! What do you think you’re doing?!” Clu shouted as he rode along side Sam.
“I’m not a murderer! I don’t know where you get off killing innocent programs for the fun of it, but I don’t!”
Clu revved his cycle, trying to get ahead of his son and over take him.
“Sam, listen to me! I warned you about what happens when you break the rules!” his eyes narrowed behind his dark helmet, silently pleading for Sam to see things his way.
“I know…”
Sam revved his bike hard, turning sharply to try and cut Clu off. But the admin program was fast, predicting Sam’s actions. He whipped out his light disc and a huge gash in the front tire, sending Sam careening out of control and landing on his face a good long distance away.
Clu turned his bike, light disc charged.
If Sam was going to listen to logic, the he would have to be disciplined. Strictly.
Sam got to his feet and took his own disc in hand, wanting to look ready and defiant despite how his mind told him this wasn’t going to do much good.
Both he and Clu were surprised as all hell when a large vehicle came roaring into the arena, its light ribbon causing Clu to crash and fly right over Sam’s head.
The masked driver pulled around and opened the cock pit. “Get in.”
Sam hesitated, not trusting much of anything on the Grid anymore.
“I’ll take you to your father, get in!”
Well, caution be damned.
As Sam and the masked driver sped off, Clu recovered enough to initiate the Rinzler Protocol. Deresolution with extreme prejudice.
The admin got off his knees and went back to his command ship, once again taking out his fury on his room and the unfortunate programs who served him. Once he has cooled off, he began to see how fortuitously good the circumstances had become. He knew full well who that driver was and who she was taking Sam to see.
“You’re move, Flynn, come on. Come on.”
