Fan essay: Is Light a sociopath?

I know this question has been prodded to death, but a dull shift at work compelled me to write an essay on why Light doesn't have antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy). Among his many monikers, 'sociopath' is probably the one that fans use the most, but going through the criteria and evaluation the situational circumstances, I don't feel that this diagnosis applies.

On Light and the nature of his killing...

Hi, I'm new here and I totally support Kira and Light ;), as I think he's one of the most original characters I've ever read for his terrifying intelligence mixed to his angelic appearance and beauty, his originary good intentions and his mastodontic plan, for his contradictions and his sorrow... he's totally super-human, logically and psychologically, and this is only a summary to make clear that in my opinion he' s superior to L and many others (even if I love them all, expecially L for his behaviour and intelligence =) ).

Well, I've done some icons and banners, mostly on Light and his relationship with Misa-Misa xD.

Light and Religion

I'm curious about everyone's opinions concerning Light and religion (or at least, shall we say, spiritual beliefs).

Note: Though I think Death Note is really interesting to analyze in terms of how humans their beliefs are portrayed, we will have to grant that in their universe, Gods of Death exist. Whether or not these Shinigami are in fact, "Gods" by nature or if that's just the convenient title that the humans bestow upon these supernatural beings might be beside the point, or might not, but I'll hold off on them for the moment.

I see lots of fans immediately call Light an atheist, generally with the argument that there's no way he could believe in God while simultaneously proclaiming himself to be one. I'll say now that this reasoning is a little flawed, because Light is Japanese. In the West, I think a lot of us immediately think of Judeo-Christian/Abramahic religions, and though such things exist in Japan, Light has a very low chance of being involved with them. Light's family would probably be more involved with Buddhism or Shinto, more than likely both because from statistics I've seen, most Japanese people consider themselves believers of the pair of them.

Death Note does seem to distinctly make symbolism to Light being an Abrahamic type god, even a caricature of a Jesus figure considering official art of Light standing with his arms spread in front of a cross. Not to mention the multiple references to Light as a "Savior". But throwing what Light is interpreted to the public aside, what are Light's real thoughts?

He does make reference to "gods" in the series. I think in the anime it was merely translated as God, but the original line was something about "the gods must be favoring me." He certainly could just be saying that as an admiration of his own luck. But if Light is a Shintoist, I think we have to slightly alter our perceptions on what Light is for trying to achieve divinity.

Shintoism has hundreds of gods. But they aren't exactly gods, not in the Western sense. They are kami, which I think is better translated as a spirit in some senses. Kami exist in the natural world (rivers, mountains, the sky), in supernatural realms and, most interestingly to the issue of Light, can even refer to great humans, such as heroes and nobility (noble families and especially the emperor). Ancestral spirits of human families could be worshiped as kami. What I'm trying to point out is that the Japanese perception of kami (gods?) is not equivalent to the Western perception of God, or even quite the same as our most popular polytheistic mythologies.

Despite popular belief, Shinigami themselves aren't very traditional to the Shinto faith, from my understanding. The idea is a recently new development but I'm not a scholar - possibly the older kami gods associated with death were called such, but from what I've heard, a concept of Shinigami hasn't been revered throughout the years. Either way, I find it interesting, Light's initial reactions to the Death Note. Granted, it seems natural that people will immediately pull out folktales and superstitions if they happened to get a hold of something like the Death Note, but when Ryuk comes to visit Light for the first time, Light admits that he's been expecting a god of death to come for him. He assumes that Ryuk has come to take his soul and punish him for using a Shinigami's notebook - I'm not sure if Light's assumption of supernatural consequence is tied to Japanese folklore or mythology, or if it's more of a Western idea, but nonetheless. Light readily accepts that gods of death exist.

Though the concept of judging humans for their sins is probably more of a Western idea than an East-Asian (though I could be wrong), and there is a lot of (intentional or not, Ohba?!) Christian imagery in reference to Light/Kira, in my opinion if we look at it logically, Light's probably a non-practicing Shintoist. He doesn't exactly seem the type to follow a religion to me, but I will say that in my opinion, he seems more likely to believe in kami and follow traditions than a much more grounded character like L is. The fact that he wants to become a god doesn't proclaim his otherwise atheism, and though one could definitely make an argument that Light probably has no religious beliefs whatsoever, from a Shintoist viewpoint I don't think it can be justified from the fact that he wants to be a god.

Wanted to get this community started up with discussion and stuff, so I thought I'd ask a question. :D

At what point in the series did you really start to like Light (assuming that everyone here is in this community because they do)? I was drawn to him straight from his opening scene when I first read the manga, where he's looking out his classroom window with that weary expression, and then perks up when he sees the Death Note fall on the grass. I was also a 17 year old senior in high school at the time with a bad case of senioritis, so I strangely could relate to that. XD But I've met other people who don't like him until he shows he starts with his frighteningly brilliant plotting, or not until he forfeits his memories and transitions into the more "traditional" heroic protagonist.

So when did Light earn a special place in all of your hearts?

For everyone who's been awaiting it, the Light Yagami fan comm on LJ has been officially opened! Your friendly neighborhood ~~Kira~~ mod here, just to remind you of the rules (which have already been posted in the userinfo, but will be reiterated here):

1. You can post as much graphics, icons, fanfics, fanart, AMVs, discussion points, etc. as you like, but please keep them Light-related. Not that talking about other Death Note characters is forbidden, however keep in mind the main focus of this community. ;)

2. Please link or keep under an LJ-cut fanart and fanfiction.
2.5 And to extend that, also keep all pieces that are NSFW linked or under a cut as well, with a warning.

3. No spamming, please. There will be a designated intro post if you do feel like introducing yourself.
