콜린 라킨(Colin Larkin, 1949년~)은 영국의 음악 작가이다. 그는 대중음악 백과사전을 창간하고 편집장을 역임했다.[1] 라킨은 10권으로 구성된 이 백과사전 외에도 《All Time Top 1000 Albums》라는 책을 집필했으며,[2] 《기네스 재즈 백과사전(Guinness Who's Who of Jazz)》,[3] 《기네스 블루스 백과사전(Guinness Who's Who of Blues)》,[4] 《버진 헤비 록 백과사전(Virgin Encyclopedia of Heavy Rock)》을 편집했다.[5] 그의 저서는 65만 부 이상 발행되었다.[6]

어린 시절

라킨은 영국 에식스주 대거넘에서 태어났다.[7] 그는 어린 시절 대부분을 아버지가 일하는 이동식 유원지에서 보냈다. 낮에는 시 의회 배관공으로 일하던 아버지는 생계를 잇기 위해 밤에는 유원지의 왈츠 기구에서 부업을 했다. 라킨은 유원지에서 태엽식 표준시간 음반 축음기로 재생되는 리틀 리처드의 음악을 들으며 대중음악 세계에 대한 열정을 키웠다.[8]

라킨은 사우스 이스트 에식스 카운티 기술 고등학교와 런던 인쇄 대학에서 수학했으며, 그곳에서 타이포그래피와 그래픽 디자인을 배웠다.[7]

예술 및 출판

라킨의 회사인 스콜피온 퍼블리싱(Scorpion Publishing)은 존 고먼의 노동당 역사 3부작인 《Banner Bright》,[9] 《To Build Jerusalem》, 《Images of Labour》를 출판했다.[10] 당시 출판된 음악 서적으로는 조니 로건의 《Timeless Flight: The Definitive Story of the Byrds》[11]와 《밥 딜런, His Unreleased Recordings》가 있다.[12][7]

대중음악 백과사전

1989년, 라킨은 다권본인 대중음악 백과사전을 제작하고 음악 관련 서적을 출판하기 위해 스퀘어 원 북스(Square One Books)를 설립했다. 그는 그레이엄 본드, R.E.M., 에릭 클랩튼, 버즈, 프랭크 자파 등에 관한 음악 전기물을 추가로 출판했다.[13]

인터넷이 보급되기 전이었기에 대중음악 백과사전을 만드는 작업은 매우 방대한 노력을 필요로 했다. 기고자 팀, 빠르게 성장하는 음악 잡지와 서적 도서관, 그리고 음악 그 자체의 도움을 받아, 최종적으로 3,000장의 비닐 싱글, 3,500장의 비닐 앨범, 4,500권의 음악 전기 및 38,000장의 CD를 수집한 라킨은 백과사전 편집을 시작했다.[14]

1992년, 대중음악 백과사전 제1판이 출간되었다.[15] 타임스는 이를 "거의 공포스러울 정도의 완벽함을 갖춘 저작"이라고 평했다. 음악가 줄스 홀랜드는 이를 "대중음악에 관하여 가장 유용한 참고 자료임이 의심할 여지가 없다"고 극찬했다.

스퀘어 원은 4th Dimension을 사용하여 자체적인 사내 소프트웨어를 개발했다.[16]

백과사전 데이터베이스 구축 이후 50개 이상의 개별 타이틀이 뒤따랐고, 1997년 라킨은 스퀘어 원 북스를 미국의 데이터 회사인 뮤즈에 매각했다.[16] 라킨은 상근 편집장으로 남아 10명 미만의 기고자 팀과 함께 가내수공업 형태로 백과사전을 운영했으며, 기고자들은 "매달 애거사 크리스티 소설 한 권 분량"의 원고를 생산해냈다.[14]

2008년 9월부터, 대중음악 백과사전이 독립적인 제품으로서 서비스를 종료하고 그가 해고됨에 따라 라킨은 뮤즈(Muze Inc.) 및 관련 회사와의 모든 관계를 정리했다. 2009년 4월 15일, 뮤즈의 대부분 자산이 매크로비전에 인수되었다는 발표가 있었다.[17]

2008년, 라킨은 《All Time Top 1000 Albums》에서 영감을 얻은 새로운 웹사이트인 1000Greatest.com을 개설했다. 이 사이트는 이후 멀티미디어 평가 사이트이자 아이폰 앱인 btoe.com(Best Things On Earth)으로 이름을 변경했다. 라킨은 2018년 8월 해당 사이트를 폐쇄하고 콘텐츠를 Musopedia.com으로 이전했다. 그는 Musopedia Ltd의 CEO이자 편집장을 역임했다. 해당 회사는 2020년에 해산되었다.[18]틀:Primary-inline

라킨은 롤링 스톤스의 큐레이션 프로젝트인 《Confessin' the Blues》의 라이너 노트를 작성했다.[19]

2020년 11월, 라킨은 최신 저서인 《Cover Me – The Vintage Art of Pan Books: 1950–1965》를 출간했다. 음악 외 분야에서 쓴 첫 책인 이 작품은 고전 팬 북스(Pan Books) 페이퍼백을 기념하는 내용으로, 300개가 넘는 원본 표지 아트워크의 풀컬러 복제품이 수록되었다.[20] 이 책은 2021년 H. R. F. 키팅 상 후보에 올라 최종 8인 명단(쇼트리스트)에 포함되었다.[21] 2022년 5월에는 페이퍼백 에디션이 출간되었다.[22]
