CANNOT CREATE OR EDIT Microsoft WORD with Office 2021

I have Microsoft Word for Mac

Purchased as part of "Microsoft Home & Business"

for 1PC/MAC 2021

The "About Word" states:

Version 16.114.1 (26102031)

Now, when I open a Word document, I cannot create or edit it.

Message at top of page:

"Activate Microsoft 365 to Create and Edit/ Your Office 2021 license is not supported with this version of the application./ Learn more/ Activate"

BUT ACCORDING to the page accessed from "Learn more" (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/system-requirements/end-of-support-for-office-2021)

I should be able to CONTINUE to use Office 2021 (but with security risks).

How do I use my perpetual license until I decide if I want Office 365?

There have been multiple reports starting Oct 22 2026 from Office for Mac users seeing perpetual-license activation problems since upgrading to version 16.114.1

Refresh the Office 2021 license in Word, because version 16.114.1 is part of the update stream applicable to Office 2021 and does not inherently require a Microsoft 365 subscription.^1^

    Refresh the existing license

    1. Open Word.
    2. Select Word > About Microsoft Word.
    3. Check the account shown beside Belongs to.
    4. Select More Info > Refresh License.
    5. Sign in with the Microsoft account originally associated with the Office Home & Business 2021 purchase.
    6. Quit Word completely with Command+Q, reopen it, and test editing.

This procedure resolved the same “Activate Microsoft 365 to Create and Edit” symptom for another Office Home & Business 2021 for Mac installation.^2^

Office 2021’s end of support on October 13, 2026 does not convert the perpetual license into a subscription. Microsoft says the applications may continue functioning, but they no longer receive security updates, fixes, or technical support.^3^

If Refresh License does not restore editing

    1. Confirm the purchase is attached to the account

Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard using the account that redeemed Office 2021. Under Office apps or purchased products, confirm Office Home & Business 2021 appears. Microsoft requires the account associated with the redeemed license when downloading or reinstalling Office 2021.^4^

If it is missing, try any other personal Microsoft account that might have been used when the product key was first redeemed. Do not purchase Microsoft 365 merely to clear this message.

    2. If Word came from the Mac App Store, replace it

This applies only if Word was downloaded through the Mac App Store. App Store versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint require Microsoft 365 for editing and cannot be activated with a perpetual Office license.^5^

    1. Quit all Office applications.
    2. Open Finder > Applications.
    3. Control-click Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, then select Move to Trash.
    4. Sign in to the Microsoft account containing Office 2021 and select Install, or download the documented Office 2021 for Mac Installer directly from Microsoft.
    5. Open the downloaded .pkg file and complete installation.
    6. Launch Word and activate it with the account associated with the Office 2021 purchase.

Removing the applications does not remove documents stored elsewhere on the Mac, but save any unsaved work first.

    3. Reset stale Mac licensing data

If the account shows the purchase and the Microsoft-installed copy still rejects it, use Microsoft’s Office License Removal Tool:

    1. Quit every Office application.
    2. Confirm that the Office 2021 account credentials are available.
    3. Download and run the License Removal Tool from Microsoft.
    4. Select Continue, complete the wizard, and enter the Mac administrator password when requested.
    5. Open Word and sign in with the account associated with Office Home & Business 2021.
    6. Restart the Mac after activation.^6^

The tool removes locally stored Office licenses, not the Office purchase. It should therefore be used only after confirming access to the purchasing account.

    macOS requirement

Office 2021 version 16.114.1 is newer than 16.78, so it requires at least macOS Monterey 12. Microsoft also lists macOS 12 and Office version 16.83 as the minimum versions for avoiding reduced-functionality mode introduced for older systems.^7^

If the Mac is running an older macOS release, update through:

Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update

If the Mac cannot run macOS 12 or later, this installation cannot meet the documented minimum requirement; Office 2021 would need to be used on a supported Mac or PC.
