Thinking about taking your game direct-to-consumer? 📲 In the latest GameMakers podcast, we break down our new IAP SDK and why web shop margins are only half the story. Tune in this hear how D2C strategies really work and how Unity will soon feed web shop data right back into Vector to optimize your growth. 🎧 Listen to the full episode: https://lnkd.in/eykRF33z

Unity just made direct-to-consumer payments free for every developer on its IAP SDK. No take rate. No fees. $0. When I spoke with Steve Ganem, VP of Product at Unity, my first question was the obvious one: why would a company that makes most of its money elsewhere give away the payment layer for free? His answer reframed what I believe Unity is actually doing... The potentially obv part: This isn't a payments story. It's a data story. Here's the more nuanced part: When developers sell directly to players (bypassing the App Store and Google Play), they generate first-party signals: who's buying, what they're buying, and how they behave. That signal is the fuel for Unity's "real" business: advertising and its AI platform, Unity Vector. And the incentive to opt in isn't just about monetization upside. It's about user acquisition loss. As Steve put it: if you go direct WITHOUT keeping that signal flowing back to Unity, "you'll actually be losing signals... you'll suffer from a user acquisition perspective." A few things I took away from the conversation: → "Free" is rational, not charity. Zero take rate is only believable because of what Unity kept — and it's buying something worth far more than a commission. → Margin is the wrong lens. As Steve said, "if you think margin equals opportunity, then you're really missing the big picture." The real prize is the direct relationship with your players. → D2C isn't for everyone, everywhere. His most practical line for developers: don't blindly redirect 100% of your users. Sometimes "the juice won't be worth the squeeze." The most interesting move in gaming right now isn't the one with a price tag. It's the one priced at zero. Design reviews shouldn't end in another slide deck 🫠 When feedback is scattered across screenshots, presentations, and long email threads, it's harder for teams to collaborate, iterate, and move projects forward. That's why we built Unity Studio, our web-based editor designed for industries like manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, architecture, and more! It helps teams turn existing 3D assets into interactive review experiences directly in the browser, making it easier to explore designs, share feedback, and align stakeholders. Want to see it in action? Check out how Nick DePalo transformed a static 3D model into an interactive design review in under an hour. 🔗 Try it out yourself with a free 30-day Unity Studio trial: https://lnkd.in/g2VA3_xk #UnityStudio #UnityIndustry #3DExperience
