A labyrinth has one path: it winds to the center and back out, with no branches and no way to take a wrong turn. A maze branches. It has junctions, dead ends, and usually a separate entrance and exit, and only one route actually connects them. That single difference, choice versus no choice, is what every other contrast on this page comes down to.

the short answer

The whole thing rides on two words: unicursal and multicursal.

A labyrinth is unicursal. One path. It can switchback for fifty yards and still never ask you to choose, so getting lost is physically impossible. A maze is the other thing, multicursal, which means it forks. It loops, it dead-ends, it bluffs. Most turns you take will be wrong, and that is the point of it. Strip the wrong turns out and you are not left with an easy maze, you are left with nothing to solve.

So: a labyrinth is something you walk. A maze is something you beat.

Wikipedia's Labyrinth entry puts it the same way: "maze refers to a complex branching multicursal puzzle with choices of path and direction, while a unicursal labyrinth has only a single path to the center." Garden designers and labyrinth facilitators keep that line. Everyday English ignores it, which is the knot we untangle below.

unicursal vs multicursal explained

These two words carry the whole argument, so they are worth a minute.

Unicursal means "one course." The path is a single continuous line. It can coil back on itself dozens of times and look intricate, but it never splits. The seven-circuit classical labyrinth crosses its seven rings again and again, yet there is only ever one route through it.

Multicursal means "many courses." The path branches, and most branches are traps: dead ends, loops that dump you back where you started, forks that look promising and quit. A maze is the textbook case.

Here is the counterintuitive part. A labyrinth can look busier than a maze and still be trivial, because all those coils contain zero decisions. The complexity is visual. A maze can look almost empty and still be brutal, because difficulty lives in the choices, not the line count.

You can see this in how we generate them. At the default setting, every maze we build is a perfect maze, which is a precise mathematical object: a spanning tree where exactly one path connects any two cells, with no loops anywhere. We verify that property automatically on every shape we ship. Turn up the braid setting and the generator starts knocking holes between corridors, removing dead ends and adding loops, which makes the maze easier to wander but harder to fully exhaust. Both versions branch, so both are multicursal. Neither is a labyrinth.

where the words come from

The two words started in completely different places, which is half the reason people mix them up.

Labyrinth is Greek, from labyrinthos. The "-inthos" ending is older than Greek itself, a pre-Greek fossil that points back to Minoan Crete, and the root may be labrys, the double-headed axe that was a sacred symbol at the palace of Knossos. So the literal sense sits closer to "House of the Double Axe" than to "puzzle." It named a place, and a loaded one.

Maze is blunter, and a lot younger. It comes from Middle English mased, meaning confused or stunned, the same root that gives us "amaze." The bewilderment is the word. Which is exactly what a branching puzzle does to whoever walks in.

Then they collapsed into each other. Merriam-Webster now defines "labyrinth" partly as "a maze," and Wikipedia's Maze entry calls the two generally synonymous while noting that "labyrinth" can still mean the single-path kind. A sacred name and a word for dizziness, drifting together over a few centuries until most people stopped telling them apart.

the history of the labyrinth

People have been redrawing the labyrinth for at least three thousand years. The classical seven-circuit figure surfaces on Cretan coins, in Scandinavian rock carvings, scratched into pottery, pressed into walls half a world apart, and it comes out nearly identical every time. Same handful of nested loops, over and over, across cultures that never met.

Then there is the Minotaur, and this is our favorite fact in the entire argument. In the myth, Daedalus builds the Labyrinth for King Minos to cage the Minotaur, and Theseus only gets out because Ariadne hands him a ball of thread to retrace his steps. Sit with that for a second. A trap you cannot escape without breadcrumbs is, by every modern definition, a maze. So the most famous "labyrinth" in history is technically a maze. The word has been arguing with itself since the Bronze Age.

The medieval church pulled the form back the other way. Around 1200, designers laid labyrinths into cathedral floors, and these were strictly unicursal. The masterpiece is at Chartres Cathedral: eleven circuits, roughly 42 feet across, walked by pilgrims as a stand-in for the journey to Jerusalem. No decisions, on purpose. The path does the navigating so the walker is free to pray or think.

It is on its third life now. Over the past few decades labyrinths have come back into hospitals, churches, retreat centers, and ordinary backyards, almost always as walking-meditation tools. Thousands are catalogued in the Worldwide Labyrinth Locator.

the history of the maze

The get-lost-on-purpose maze is the younger sibling, and it grew up in gardens.

Renaissance nobility took the old labyrinth shape and broke it on purpose, in the best way: tall hedges, real forks, dead ends that lead nowhere. The survivor everyone knows is the Hampton Court Maze outside London, planted in the 1690s for William III by George London and Henry Wise. Half a mile of paths folded into a hedge trapezoid. It is usually called the oldest surviving hedge maze in the UK, and people have been getting cheerfully, hopelessly lost in it for three hundred years.

After hedges, the maze went anywhere a line could go. Puzzle books and kids' activity pages. Whole cornfields, recut every autumn. Games, from Pac-Man to half the dungeons ever coded. why people use the words interchangeably

If the line is so clean, why does everyone smudge it? A few honest reasons.

The dictionaries license it. Major ones list "maze" and "labyrinth" as synonyms and treat the unicursal/multicursal split as a convention rather than a rule. The myth licenses it too: the Cretan Labyrinth was a trap, so the very word "labyrinth" has been pulling toward "maze" for thousands of years. And history was loose with both terms. Reference works including Britannica note that the careful distinction is mostly an enthusiast-and-scholar habit, while older writers used the words freely. Classic labyrinth images from antiquity through the Renaissance were nearly all unicursal, and branching mazes only became common once hedge mazes caught on.

Both usages are defensible. Calling a hedge maze a "labyrinth" is normal conversational English. When you are designing, describing, or buying one, though, the technical word tells you what you are actually getting: a meditative single path, or a puzzle you can lose yourself in.

This is the use behind the modern revival, and it is the cleanest illustration of why unicursal design exists.

A labyrinth asks nothing of your attention. There is no route to work out, so the part of your brain that would normally be solving just goes quiet. People walk them to slow down, to pray, to chew on a problem, to actually be present with each step instead of three steps ahead. The single path becomes the metaphor it was always meant to be: in to the center, a pause, back out. Walkers describe a calm that a maze, nagging them for a decision every few feet, simply cannot give.

So you find labyrinths wherever calm is the goal. Cathedral floors, still carrying the pilgrimage tradition. Hospital courtyards. Retreat gardens. A path mown into a school lawn. The Labyrinth Society, the main group behind the practice, splits maze from labyrinth on this exact point: one is built to help you find your center, the other to make you lose your way.

how to tell them apart at a glance

Looking at a pattern and unsure which it is? Five quick checks settle it.

  • Trace the path from the entrance with your eyes. If it ever splits, it is a maze. If it stays one line, it is a labyrinth.
  • Look for dead ends. Labyrinths have none; mazes are full of them.
  • Count the openings. A classic labyrinth uses one opening for both entrance and exit. Many mazes have a separate start and finish.
  • Ask what it is for. Painted on a courtyard or church floor for walking is almost always a labyrinth. Grown from tall hedges or printed in a puzzle book is almost always a maze.
  • Run the "could I get lost?" test. If the honest answer is no, it is a labyrinth.

Both forms come in distinct families.

Labyrinths (single path):

  • Classical, or Cretan: the ancient seven-circuit design built around a central cross and four dots. The oldest and most widespread.
  • Medieval, or Chartres: the 11-circuit design with a six-petal rose at the center, the model for most modern walking labyrinths.
  • Roman: usually square and divided into quadrants, common in mosaics across the Roman world.
  • Contemporary and freeform: new unicursal patterns designed for parks, gardens, and therapy spaces.

Mazes (branching):

  • Hedge mazes, the garden puzzle grown from tall plants, like Hampton Court.
  • Block or wall mazes, where walls divide a grid into corridors. This is the type our generator builds.

  • Corn (maize) mazes, seasonal field mazes, often huge and themed.
  • Mirror mazes, built from mirrored panels and lights.
