Scene: House and Paige
Characters: House and Paige
Date: June 6th, 2006
Setting: House's office
Summary: Paige needs House to sign off on something, but unfortunately for her, being hungover doesn't get you on the diagnostician's good side.
Paige was hurting. It was obvious by the way she was holding her head, generally complaining and looked like crap. She had her glasses on, her hair was messed up, and she was as pale as a ghost. Her head was pounding and she'd already been sick twice. She just wanted to be at home. But no, there she was at work.
Heading up the elevator towards Diagnostics her phone rang again and she looked to see who it was. Her mother. Calling to cuss her out again for last night. Fantastic. She let it ring and stepped out of the elevator and headed down towards Diagnostics slowly. Too bad she had the wrong form. But she wouldn't figure that out until she got there.
One tall doctor was also heading for the Diagnostics department. *His* department, actually. House was coming from who knows where, and just as he reached his door, he noticed the slightly paled female doctor coming his way. With one hand out to open the door, House gives the girl a look up and down, deciding that she was coming for him. Maybe she was some other patient's doctor, some patient he pissed off. Wait, that was a clipboard in her hand.
Uninterested, House entered his office and got to his chair, feeling like he wanted to pretend like he was doing something just so that this other doctor would know who she was talking to. The Head of Diagnostics. Oh yeah. He'd rather she leave before even asking him for whatever it was. House leans back in his chair as quick as he can without falling out, and he reaches out for the nearest magazine, flipping it open.
Paige spotted Dr House coming towards his own department and gave a little sigh. She half wanted to call out but figured that would hurt her head something fierce. And any kind of loud noise was just going to kill her. She kept heading down the hall, peering into the office to find Dr House sitting there reading a magazine. And she knew he had seen her. Bah.
She flung open the door, and took a deep breath and headed inside. "Dr House.. can you just... sign this?" she asked, holding out the clipboard towards him. She winced at the sound of her own voice.
Too bad for House that what he picked up wasn't a medical journal, or wasn't academic in the least. Unless there was suddenly a study of breast size. The men's magazine featured a young blonde actress on the cover, and it was obvious that House wasn't busy in the least. He furrowed his brow as he studied the centrefold, turning the magazine on its side to get a more accurate view.
House didn't have to look up to know that the young doctor had entered his domain. He didn't have to hear her speak to know she wanted something from him, and what she wanted, she wanted quickly so that she could get out of there. She was not meek, no, not just that.
"Okay, tell me. From *your* feminine point of view." House held up the magazine and showed her the woman kneeling provocatively on the page, a look of innocence on his face. "Are these real? It's too good to be true."
Paige winced again at the level of volume. Her eyes scrunched she wondered what the hell he was going on about. She peered at the page, rubbing her eyes. God couldn't he just sign the damn form? Christ. She peered at the breasts and gave a small shrug. "I don't think they are. I mean breasts aren't supposed to be at the same level of your shoulders right?" her nose wrinkled.
"Sadly they airbrush surgery lines away so you never know for sure. Even if her breasts are real, they probably made them up for the magazine." The coroner put the clipboard out towards him. "Just one little signature? Please?" Before she went and threw up on him or something.
House wouldn't have this. He was already annoyed, but if he *seemed* annoyed because the doctor wouldn't agree with him about the authenticity of the breasts, that would be shallow. Hah.
"Yeeeeeah, but look, she's, she's leaning back a little bit." House glanced at his magazine and tilted his shoulders at roughly the same angle so that he mimicked the model, then with his other hand, made a gesture to suggest a bosom. "You know what I'm talking about," he said gruffly, a little moreso than he intended. he was getting bored with his own game. The 'let's run circles around the doctors that don't know me' game.
When he saw that Paige wasn't playing anymore, House threw the magazine on his desk and nodded to the form. "What the hell is this? Or did you just want my autograph to sell on eBay?"
Paige eyed him holding his own breast and tried not to snigger. She shrugged a bit, "My boobs aren't exactly magazine material." she practically shuddered at the sound of a magazine hitting the desk. Just a magazine. She put a hand up to her forehead and sighed.
"It's signing off on the body they brought downstairs. Mrs Brown? She died. And you forgot to sign the form." except for when she looked at it and blinked. Fuck. That was the wrong form. "Oh goddamnit."
It wasn't House's favourite pasttime to be informed by a coroner. So this little event gets him a little more ruffled. Before she can explain what the form is for, House pops a Vicodin pill into his mouth and swallows it dry in one practised motion, blinking once and then opening his eyes wide when she started swearing.
"Sooo, I'm signing a form to" - House swipes the clipboard from Paige's hand, then looks back up at her - "for a dead lady to have open heart surgery. Classy, if not completely useless. Kind of like doctors who come into the hospital *hungover,* and have headaches too big for them to think straight. If you can think at all." Contrary to what he was saying, House's words are rather spoken rather smoothly, making it all the more patronizing. "Next time lay off the vodka and focus on getting your boyfriend's pants off a different way." The diagnostician throws the pen from the clipboard on his desk, but it bounces off with a loud cracking noise and falls to the floor.
Paige frowned deeply and then blinked. She was being yelled at by some guy who obviously didn't have a clue - Okay so maybe he was dead on though really she could get in her boyfriends pants without the vodka but that was besides the point. She reached down and grabbed the clipboard off the floor and blinked back tears, the sound making her shudder and wince harder then before. "It's not like I'm going to kill anyone. They're already dead." she snapped, but it was too late.
She was going to cry, and that was the last thing she wanted to do right here and right now. She was so frazzled and worn out and on edge and now - now she was going to cry. Fuck this. She didn't say anything, she just turned on her heels and marched out of the diagnostics office to go throw up. And cry. And after all that? Go home.
Ooh, so this one was a fighter, was she? She had things to say after House basically called her an idiot? Or maybe not. House wasn't the most perceptive, emotionally, but even he could tell that he struck a chord in Paige, and that she was on the verge of tears. House's expression softens, but he doesn't give any indication that he's going to let up, or apologize. In fact, he has a retort.
"The point is obviously that the pissy little surgeons are going to come up here and yell at me when they find out about the screw-up. I'll direct them to you," He avoids looking at her in the eyes when he says this last bit, feeling only a little bit awful about this all. But House knew he was right, it would have been a stupid mistake if he didn't actually read the form's headers. If Wilson was present, he would have him apologize straight away.
No need, Paige was on her way out. She looked like he couldn't get out of there fast enough. That was fine by House. If they really wanted something signed, the nurses would find him later.
