Recently Finished
The Clock House Murders
Most recently translated of the House Murders series. I didn't like this one as much as some of the others, but it was enjoyable. How many crazy houses did this one architect build anyway?

Welcome to Murder Week
Well, that will teach me to skim the summary of a book. I saw that this was about a woman who finds that her recently dead and semi-estranged mother had booked and fully paid for a trip to England to participate in a murder mystery game in a small village and when they won't refund her, decides to go alone. I assumed that during the mystery game there would be real murders! But there were not. Instead it was about finding out about her mother and also falling in love with a local guy. It was all right, but the mystery/romance balance was definitely heavy on the romance side.

At the Bottom of the Garden
Two sisters are taken in by their estranged aunt after their parents die, only to find her house haunted by ghosts of people she's killed. I liked this a lot, but it felt very unmoored from both place and time. The setting was...somewhere in an anglophone country that didn't feel like anywhere. The era was...sometime in the semi-recent past. I see the author is Norweigian. I wish she'd set it in Norway! But instead it's somewhere they say things like "bottom of the garden" and drink tea all the time, but is otherwise mostly vaguely American seeming. The technology seems maybe 1980s in some regards, but attitudes and clothing seem much earlier (everyone wears dresses and suits for the most part) but also sometimes more modern. I think with a little more leaning into the vagueness, it could have made it feel more like a fairytale or something, but instead it just felt, well, vague, in a distracting manner. The story was really good, though! And the audiobook was great, with separate narrators for the three main POV characters.

Masks
Cute middle grade graphic novel about three monster kids living in hiding in a town that has nearly eradicated monsters. When the abandoned building they're living in is set to be torn down, they decide to venture out into the human world on Halloween to hopefully find Haven, a safe place for monsters that an older monster kid had once told them about and then left to find, never to return.

Star Trek: Lower Decks vol. 3

Yuri Espoir vol. 1
A high school girl is told by her father that on her 18th birthday she'll have to marry a man who helped bail out his company. A closeted lesbian who has yet to ever date a girl, she feels this will be the equivalent of death, and decides that while she doesn't want to date anyone during her last years of freedom, knowing the relationship would be doomed, she'll console herself by creating a sketchbook of yuri relationships, and ropes her friend into helping her, totally unaware that her friend has a huge crush on her. This is cute. There's the framing story but also mini stories about each couple that she sketches (which are just her fantasies, since they're all total strangers).

Kindaichi Papa no Jikenbo vol. 5

Five Things Linwëlin Said

Posted by an

Every month or so the OTW will be doing a Q&A with one of its volunteers about their experiences in the organization. The posts express each volunteer’s personal views and do not necessarily reflect the views of the OTW or constitute OTW policy. Today’s post is with Linwëlin, who volunteers as a Tag Wrangler on the Tag Wrangling committee.

How does what you do as a volunteer fit into what the OTW does?

I wrangle tags for several smaller fandoms and I help with translating tags from Spanish to English so they can be wrangled. I mostly pick up fandoms to wrangle that have a majority of Spanish tags.

I think the most interesting part of translating tags is finding the different meanings of words in different regional dialects other than my own español rioplatense. It’s fascinating to me how within the same language a word can have a ton of different meanings, or the same concept can be named a ton of different ways. Look up all the ways you can say ‘popcorn’ in Spanish and you’ll see what I mean!

What is a typical week like for you as a volunteer?

It all depends on my energy and pain levels, but I usually break it up into smaller chunks of time (just an hour or two at a time) as often as possible because that’s what I can usually manage best.

Sometimes, though, I get in The Zone™ and I might only realise it’s been eight hours when my partner calls me for dinner!

What made you decide to volunteer?

I joined fandom later in life than most others I know, but I found the community just in time—it’s helped me through some of the roughest moments in my life. It’s provided an escape, a way to express my creativity when all my other hobbies were inaccessible to me.

I don’t have disposable income to donate, but I do have spare time, and I wanted to give back somehow to this community that has given me (and many others) so much. When I saw the call for Spanish-speaking volunteers back then, I decided to give it a shot!

What has been your biggest challenge doing work for the OTW?

Managing my own time and energy without burning myself out is the hardest part. I’m disabled, and my chronic pain (along with the medication I take and the side effects of it all) means that I have to be very careful about pacing myself if I don’t want to crash and burn.

I would like to spend a lot more time wrangling than what I can feasibly (and sustainably) do on an average week, but my health has highs and lows. Sometimes I can sit down for eight hours and have a blast translating and shovelling a ton of tags, and sometimes I can only sit for half an hour and only manage to do one or two tags. Sometimes I’ll only be able to do the bare minimum for a couple of weeks, and then I’ll bounce back.

The biggest challenge is accepting that not every day will be a satisfying marathon of productivity and efficiency, give myself some grace, and try to work with my limitations, not against them. I end up achieving a lot more when I manage that.

I mention all this because I was a bit afraid when I applied that my disability would make it impossible to keep up with the commitment of volunteering, but I’ve found that not only can I, but I enjoy it immensely. I’ve found community and support within the OTW, and personally I’ve never felt alone or lacking in help and resources. I hope this gives a new perspective to someone reading this who might be on the fence about it!

What fannish things do you like to do?

I read a lot of fic, and fandom is my main creative outlet, especially on hard days. I love writing, and lately I’ve been listening to and learning how to record podfic as well. I like to participate in drabble writing events, sprints, and other mostly-small challenges.

I’m also trying to learn how to draw! I have a lot of scenes I’ve pictured in my mind and I hope to someday be able to bring them out into the real world.

Now that our volunteer’s said five things about what they do, it’s your turn to ask one more thing! Feel free to ask about their work in the comments. Or if you’d like, you can check out previous Five Things posts.

1. It's Friday!

2. We went to Disneyland this evening and it was so nice weather-wise. The sun was still up for most of the time, but it was going down, so I didn't need a hat or sunglasses, and it was nice and cool and not humid. We actually did get a tiny bit of rain but it was just when we were about to leave anyway, so it didn't cause any problems. The crowds weren't too bad, either.

My website seems to be having some issue so I can't upload pics, so hopefully that will be working tomorrow so I can make a proper post about the trip.

3. The reason we went tonight instead of Saturday is that we are going to see My Chemical Romance tomorrow!

4. Look at this handsome man!

1. When I wore my new glasses last night I was feeling a little funny like they might take some getting used to, even though the prescription is not that different, but I wore them all day today with no issue, so idk what that was.

2. There was some rain overnight, but it never really materialized today, so I was able to take all my walks and bike rides and not get wet. There was a tiny bit a little while ago, but it's stopped again, and while we might get some more overnight, that should be the end of it.

3. I finished up a puzzle this morning.

This was a 500 piece one, which is a little too easy for me now, but I had actually bought it last year after Halloween and saved it for this year. It was fun, though, and now I'll put it out in the little library for someone else to enjoy (there's still time before Halloween!).

4. Jasper was wilding out on my bag yesterday lol.

Yuletide 2026

Much of this letter is c&p'd from years past, because I'm a predictable person I guess.

Hello, I'm yasaman both here and on AO3! I am open to receiving treats!

Another year, another Yuletide! :D Thank you for signing up to write in one of my fandoms! I can't wait to see whatever you come up with, and with these fandoms, chances are I'll love whatever it is you choose to write. If my requests/prompts/details don't catch your interest, just remember that Optional Details Are Optional, and that I will be thrilled to get fic in any of these fandoms at all.

As far as my basic preferences go: I am okay with gen, het, slash, and femslash. If I've indicated a pairing preference in my request, don't feel pressured to write it! I'm a big gen lover, and I'll specifically note if there's a pairing I don't want to see with the characters I've requested. Also, a confession: I usually skim through sex scenes. I know, I know, what am I doing in fandom if I skim past the porn. But I am almost always way more interested in character interaction than in sexy times. Feel free to include sex scenes! I'd just really prefer that porn not be the whole point of the fic.

Things I love: happy endings, banter, subtle but meaningful declarations of love and/or trust, pining, characters finding home and family with each other, the smaller moments of domesticity or the calm before the storm, crossovers, detailed worldbuilding, lolz, feelings, women being complex and sometimes assholes, dudes being stoic yet simmering with repressed emotions, people being kind to each other in ways both obvious and not obvious, any number of forced intimacy situations (fake married! Undercover relationship! Surprise soul bond! Huddling for warmth! Oh no there’s only one bed! Sex pollen! I could go on, really), threesomes/sedoretu-style moresomes, and indulgent emotional hurt/comfort.

DNWs that apply in general: dark fic, character bashing, permanent character death of canon characters (this DNW does not apply to any canonical character deaths), non-con, infidelity, incest, alpha/beta/omegaverse fic, mpreg, harm to children beyond any such harm already referenced in the canon, being mean to robots, unhappy endings (that are not canonical, at least), issuefic (by which I mean dealing with racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia etc. or sexual orientation and/or identity being the focus of the fic), ageplay, infantilization, daddy/mommy kink, scat, watersports, extreme underage, humiliation or anything that would trigger secondhand embarrassment, gaslighting, mundane AUs, readerfic. I do not want any AI-generated or AI-assisted fic.

1. 17776: What Football Will Look Like in the Future - Any (Juice, Nine, Ten, Hubble, Worldbuilding)

Am I going to keep requesting this every year, no matter how many fics I get? Probably!

AO3 Tag Wranglers continue our processes for wrangling canonical additional tags (tags that appear in the auto-complete) which don’t belong to any particular fandom (also known as “No Fandom” tags). This post overviews some of these upcoming changes.

In this round of updates, we continued to adjust existing canonical “No Fandom” tags to add or remove new subtag and metatag relationships. We also continued to streamline creating new canonical tags, prioritizing more straightforward updates which would have less discussion compared to renaming current canonical tags or creating new canonical tags which touch on more complex topics. This method also reviews new tags on a regular basis, so check back on AO3 News for periodic “No Fandom” tag announcements.

None of these updates change the tags users have added to works. If a user-created tag is considered to have the same meaning as a new canonical, it will be made a synonym of one of these newly created canonical tags, and works with that user-created tag will appear when the canonical tag is selected.

In short, these changes only affect which tags appear in AO3’s auto-complete and filters. You can and should continue to tag your works however you prefer.

New Canonicals

The following concepts have been made new canonical tags:

Subtag/Metatag Revisions

Additionally, we continued to adjust existing canonical tags to add or remove new subtag and metatag relationships, which help users find related content and filter in/out content as they browse works on AO3.

In Conclusion

While some of these tags may be tags and concepts you’re intimately familiar with, others may be concepts you’ve never heard of before. Fortunately, our fellow OTW volunteers at Fanlore may be able to help! As you may have seen in the comments sections of previous posts, Fanlore is a fantastic resource for learning more about these common fandom concepts, and about the history and lore of fandom in general. For the curious, here’s a quick look at a few articles about concepts related to this month’s new canonical tags:

While we won’t be announcing every change we make to No Fandom canonical tags, you can expect similar updates in the future about tags we believe will most affect users. If you’re interested in the changes we’ll be making, you can continue to check AO3 News or follow us on Bluesky @wranglers.archiveofourown.org or Tumblr @ao3org for future announcements.

You can also read previous updates on “No Fandom” tags as well as other wrangling updates, linked below:

For more information about AO3’s tag system, check out our Tags FAQ.

In addition to providing technical help, AO3 Support also handles requests related to how tags are sorted and connected. If you have questions about specific tags, which were first used over a month ago and are unrelated to any of the new canonical tags listed above, please contact Support instead of leaving a comment on this post.

Please keep in mind that discussions about what tags to canonize and what format they should take are ongoing. As a result, not all related concepts will be canonized at the same time. This does not mean that related or similar concepts will not be canonized in the future or that we have chosen to canonize one specific concept in lieu of another, simply that we likely either haven’t gotten to that related concept yet or that it needs further discussion and will take a bit longer for us to canonize it as a result. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Lastly, we’re still working on implementing changes and connecting relevant user-created tags to these new canonicals, so it’ll be some time before these updates are complete. If you have questions about specific tags which should be connected to these new canonicals, please refrain from contacting Support about them until at least three months from now to give us adequate time to do so.

Dear Yuletide writer,

Thank you for writing for me! I'm a generally omnivorous reader and excited to read anything that you come up with – everything in this letter is optional. Have fun!

N.B. I've had a bit of a rubbish year, so if fandoms I haven't requested before have shorter sections than the others, please forgive the discrepancy – I love all my requests a lot, but haven't quite got the brains I normally do to write prompts.

AO3: karanguni
tl;dr: I happily opt into gen, porn, unusual media types, and crossovers with fandoms I have read/written/requested before; ignore or take as many parts of this wall of text as you want! My AO3 account has gifts enabled for treats.

1. I got a message from Apple today that my old phone was received and eligible for the full trade-in amount of $510, so that's good. (I won't be getting a refund or anything since I was charged the amount of the new phone minus the assumed trade-in amount, but it's good to know I won't have to pay extra because they didn't feel it met the requirements for good condition or whatever.)

2. I got my new glasses in the mail today and this pair has no scratch! I never did receive any instructions on returning the first pair, so I'm checking with Zenni now to see if I need to return them or not. I provided a photo showing the scratch when I requested the replacement, and they acknowledged it, so maybe that's enough and they don't need the original pair back.

3. We did get rain today but it mostly didn't interfere with my day. It wasn't raining at all this morning so I was able to do my morning walk and bike ride with no issue, and was even able to take an after lunch walk around noon, though it did start sprinkling on my way back, and I went to sit in my car for a bit afterwards and it started actually raining so when I went back in to work I did get a bit wet but not too bad. It really poured for a while in the afternoon but I was indoors the whole time, and by the time I left work it was only raining lightly and had completely stopped by the time I got home. It might rain some more overnight or tomorrow, but should be over by early Friday morning.

Books

71. Home Child, by Liz Berry, 2023, poetry, 5/5

A collection of narrative poetry about a fictionalised Home Child, one of the poor British children sent to Canada (amongst other colonies) between 1860-1960 as indentured servants, often without the permission of their families, from whom they were intentionally severed.
Berry is, as I've mentioned before, an excellent poet. Here, she's chosen to use many short poems, instead of one long narrative, to examine this complex history from multiple perspectives. The result is a multi-faceted gem. Berry's great aunt was one of the children abducted from the Black Country (and Birmingham conurbation) then expatriated to rural Nova Scotia, but everyone should empathise with the children and this situation will speak to anyone with a family or community history of indenture (or other forms of enslavement, mass child abduction, or forced expatriation). It's estimated 1 in 10 contemporary Canadians has a Home Child ancestor.
Warning for the obvious - Berry isn't trying to extract additional horror or shock from an inevitably traumatic narrative.

From Out West
Walk across the hills of Whycocomagh
when the light near blinds you
and you will see them in the furrows,
in the heartsore violets, the shivering pines.

From The Violets
Home's not a place, you must believe this,
but one who names you and means beloved.

73. A Mermaid's Rescue (Mermaid series book 2), by Chris Riddell, 2026, children's illustrated novel, 4/5

With Riddell's fabulous illustrations for his fantastical story of a mermaid who has to save her friends and neighbours from a James-Bond-style villain polluting the ocean (and the discourse). Riddell has previously kept separate his parallel careers as a children's book author and a vicious political satirist but his rage at the state of the world breaks through in this second volume of his Mermaid series. We're presented with a villain named Nylon Dusk and his lap-duck called... you're probably ahead of me here... Donald. One aspect of the book didn't quite work for me, but Riddell clearly understood this and did it anyway, which is his knowing choice as an experienced and beloved creator. I'm not sure this will stand the test of time as well as most of Riddell's work but like the author I too am currently feeling petty enough to want the cheap laugh now more than I want yet another children's classic for the future.

Translated AO3 Notification Emails

Oct. 21st, 2026 12:00 pm
[syndicated profile] otw_news_feed

Posted by therealmorticia

For many years, our coders and translation volunteers have been working to internationalize AO3. Today, we are excited to announce that registered users will now be able to receive notification emails from us in another language! If you are logged in to your AO3 account, you can go to your Preferences page and choose the locale that we will use when sending you emails, such as kudos or subscription notifications.

The dropdown for 'Your locale' on the Preferences page, listing English and Simplified Chinese (中文(简体)) as possible options.

We are starting off by enabling the option to receive notification emails in Simplified Chinese (中文(简体)). After we are sure that the new preference is working correctly and the translated emails are going out smoothly, other languages will be enabled – hopefully very soon!

Note that we are not translating user-created content, such as fanworks or comments. For example, in a translated kudos email, the subject “You’ve got kudos!” and the number of guests who left kudos will be translated. However, the list of usernames and the titles of your works will remain in their original languages.

A kudos email in which the main text is localized in Simplified Chinese (中文(简体)) for a work titled in French. The email reads "OTW_Translation和1名访客给您的作品Bon Appétit点了赞。"

When will my language be available?

Simplified Chinese (中文(简体)) is currently the only available language, because we wanted to focus on enabling the locale preference. More languages will be made available once we’ve confirmed that the new preference is working correctly. This staggered rollout allows us to get the completed translations to you as soon as possible, instead of delaying them until everything is fully coded, tested, and translated.

Why are some emails still in English after I select a locale?

AO3 has over 30 different types of emails, but not all of them are translated yet. Instead, we are focusing on the most common emails, as well as some emails that are needed for technical or security reasons. As translations for more emails become available over time, we will start sending out the translated versions based on the locale you’ve chosen instead of the default, English text. This means that some emails may remain in English for some time, or be partially in English, even after you select a different locale in your preferences. Enabling a language as soon as the most used emails are translated helps get translations to you faster.

Additionally, we can’t send translated emails to guests, such as notifications for replies to comments you left without logging in.

Can I volunteer to translate emails in my language?

Yes! The Translation committee accepts translator applications year-round, and would love to hear from you, whether you’d like to join an existing language team, or pioneer a team for a language we don’t cover yet! Please note that our translators work on a variety of content, including AO3 email localization, FAQs, news posts, and other documents, and if you pass our selection process, you’ll receive several different types of tasks to work on. If you enjoy working in a team and would like to help make even more content available in your language, please get in touch with Translation!

Why isn’t the rest of the site translated?

We chose to translate notification emails first, because they are relatively self-contained and thus simpler to translate and technically implement compared to the full website interface. This has allowed us to use the emails to develop coding standards and translation processes which we can now utilize for the interface. We’re already making progress on this, but we can’t promise anything yet.

If you have experience with web application development, especially in Ruby on Rails and internationalization, you can become a code contributor to help us further this and other initiatives.

I spotted an incorrect translation, how can I tell you about it?

Please contact Translation with the following information, and they will review your suggestion.

  • the subject line of the email notification
  • a full quote of the text that you believe is incorrect
  • and an explanation of what you think it should be changed to and why

We’re excited to move forward with this important work to make AO3 more accessible to our international user base, and we look forward to adding more languages, as well as internationalizing the main website interface, in the future!
