THE OLD LADY WHO INVENTED GOITH – the debut novel from Mick Mercer

Having written about Goth since it began, with a past in fanzines (starting in 1976) and music journalism, I guess it isn’t surprising what lies at the heart of my first novel, THE OLD LADY WHO INVENTED GOTH, but this is not a typical book. For a start the first edition is illustrated in a new way for a novel, while the story is a prequel to what we know and understand. 100 years ago Hermione M. Lee wanted what we have now, but it simply didn’t exist. As she was just fourteen, and a surprisingly foul-mouthed child, with The Great War brewing quietly in the distance there wasn’t a great deal she could do about it, or anything. That never stopped her trying, from the moment she found creativity crackling beneath her fingernails and in a busy life Hermione was rarely inert for long. A champion of darkness, and yet a vanquisher of gloom, Hermione M. Lee is a Gothic blueprint in action, living a life steeped in sin and intrigue, but justifiably so.

What we take for granted was just a shapeless pipedream for her, but with due diligence, and a blatant disregard for decency, she set about her task of trying to light the pathway to darkness, to entice others in on her shadowy obsessions, to revel in the heady realms of atmospheric adventure.

Real life would rudely interrupt the theatrical costumier, as she became, and the Second World War most of all, but here was an impish provocateur, a writer, a schemer, a therapist, a liar, and a con artist, a flirt, a wit, a physical threat.

She flourishes in the twenties and thirties, performs valiant deeds through the forties, and cosies up to the youth cults which germinate in the fifties and spread through the sixties and seventies, mocking all and sundry, wielding a contemptuous vocal scythe through any who did not appreciate what she knew was intrinsically preferable.

HEX FILES: Resurrection update

I have deleted the earlier post because people have asked for more specific details of contents so behind the cut of this trimmer update you can see how many photos have been added, and of whom, which should prove easily enough why this is the biggest book ever published on Goth, with the American and UK sections now individually bigger than the original book was.
(*Someone that just ordered it tells me Lulu – the publisher - are offering free shipping within America through the Summer.)
To recap, HEX FILES: Resurrection is the new version of my Hex Files book originally published in 1996, when we were well into the fourth wave of Goth and this covered the International scene, which I’d wanted to do since my second book. There was a groundswell of interest in other elements, which is why Vampire, Pagan and Fetish content was also included, and this book had been out of print for well over a decade. The reason my Author’s Edition becomes the biggest book on Goth ever published is because what was once originally 192 pages, containing 231 photos is now a vast 664 pages, with 793 photos and 207 illustrations – doubtless including bands, business or people from your specific area. The only thing I have stuck to is the original 1997 price of £17.99, making this something of a bargain!

I have kept to the original text and not updated anyone already covered in my subsequent books (21st Century Goth, Music To Die For), but the original text has been certainly expanded (up from 81,000 to 98,000) as I have found extra information on bands, people and businesses who were only written about in this particular book. (I have also assumed many people buying this haven’t got my later books and provided urls where relevant as well double checking for business addresses.)

I have included as much of the material as it possible to do so that people originally sent for inclusion, which the publishers couldn’t cope with and people have requested photographic details, and here they are. Numbers in brackets indicate how many more than one photos exist of that artist.

A scene is obviously worth nothing if it cannot identify itself by identifying with others within it. Support is sometimes necessary, and possible. Phoenix Marie, herself a Goth, was a regular poster on my journal until she became ill, and when she began her fundraising effort I did an interview in my magazine to spread the word about her fundraising appeal, but felt a limited edition Goth book might be more helpful. She is responding to treatment, which is why it is vital she completes the course, which she must pay for herself - the alternative being the onset of advanced old age and crippling pain. With nothing better to do he packed his gear and headed to the mountains. Psyonic having no idea or knowledge of the psytrance culture and community was taken by surprise once he hit the dance floor. and like us all, he felt as though he had finally found his place and purpose. Now 6 almost 7 yrs later as the music has grown and progressed into a darker more harsh style.

Goth magazine THE MICK 50 and THE MICK 51 are both now up for free download. All free, containing interviews with inspiring artists, from yours truly, the longest-running Goth writer in the world. THE MICK 51 is a trim little Xmas Special with members of bands remembering the best and worst of Xmas and sharing the occasional spooky experience.

Understandably, the biggest aspect is the Appeal For Phoenix Marie which calls for some Goth Solidarity, with her remarkable and touching life story coming through a combination of interview and photos, which explains her unusual lift-threatening plight, as well as examples of the photos from her, Jody Elliott and myself that can be purchased towards paying her medical expenses, to prevent any acceleration of brain damage at a time when just one year of treatment could pull her back from the brink and lead to a pretty normal, active life again.
