So I figured it was about damn time I updated here. Been here in Texas almost 5 months...LOL. I've moved 3 times, had 3 cell phones/numbers, 2 jobs, 1 girlfriend/now ex, and 1 truck. But honestly I'm doing well and for the most part reasonably enjoying life. I'm tired a lot, (two jobs will do that) I think I'm going to start using LJ more in the new year...I guess only time will tell.

For all the complaints about the Yankees' spending, many viewed their decline as inevitable.

"They had the biggest, richest house in the neighborhood," one executive says. "If the roof went bad, they went out and bought a new roof. If they needed a new driveway, they got it. They bought everything they needed. But at some point, the house still gets old."

The house is old, in disrepair and probably in need of demolition, but that's not going to happen. The Yankees' sweeping lineup changes last week represented their first attempt to salvage the season. Further moves are certain under the ever-patient George Steinbrenner. But as one club official says: "You don't need a Band-Aid. You need a transplant."

A little vision would help, starting with a five-part plan:

1. Don't panic. As bad as the Yankees looked during their 12-19 start, their run differential indicated that their record should have been closer to 15-16. What's more, opponents were batting a major league-high .343 on balls in play, reflecting not just questionable range but also poor luck. Once the Yankees get closer to .309 -- the American League average last season -- their pitching won't look so horrid.

Rather than act upon their usual expensive whims, the Yankees need to pursue rational solutions-for example, a trade for A's outfielder Eric Byrnes, not the Reds' Ken Griffey. Also, manager Joe Torre could make better use of his deadwood. The one thing Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams still can do is get on base. Platoon them at DH in the No. 2 spot, and make the best of it.

2. Hire a strong CEO. Steinbrenner prefers management by chaos, insulating himself from blame by pitting his Tampa executives against general manager Brian Cashman in New York. Like any GM, Cashman makes mistakes. But he doesn't call every shot. Amid all of the internal strife, the Yankees effectively waste their executive talent.

Contrast the Yankees with the Braves, whose GM, John Schuerholz, clearly is in control. Schuerholz's staff is full of sharp, opinionated baseball men who speak their minds without fear. Ownership interference is minimal, and Schuerholz is quick to credit his subordinates. Seems to work, doesn't it?

3. Re-commit to a farm system. Well, duh-but with the Yankees, a reminder is necessary. The Yankees haven't drafted and developed an impact position player since Derek Jeter, the sixth overall draft pick in 1992. They haven't drafted and developed a pitcher since Andy Pettitte, whom they selected in the 22nd round in 1990 and signed a year later.

Again, the Braves provide a telling contrast. Schuerholz prevents his club from getting too old by regularly mixing in young players; all four Braves starting infielders are home-grown, as is center fielder Andruw Jones. Schuerholz also is effective at using his farm system to acquire players in trades.

4. Don't trust anyone over 30. The Yankees already are drooling over the approximately $50 million coming off their payroll at the end of the season. They need to start acquiring players in their primes rather than investing in older names. Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran, 28, would have been ideal, but the Yankees were tapped out after they acquired lefthander Randy Johnson -- and signed him through age 44.

5. Stop overpaying relievers. It's foolish to invest heavily in relievers, whose performances fluctuate from year to year. The Yankees can't be faulted for giving $10.5 million to closer Mariano Rivera, but they began the season with five other relievers making $3 million or more. The Brewers are paying righthander Ricky Bottalico $800,000 and their other relievers $360,000 or less. Yet they began the week ranked third in the National League in bullpen ERA.

When will the Yankees learn? Money isn't everything.

ALL-CASTOFF TEAM

A team of former Yankees prospects holds more promise than George Steinbrenner's current $206 million collection.

First base: Nick Johnson, Nationals. Sent to the Expos in the Javier Vazquez trade.

Second base: Alfonso Soriano, Rangers. Traded for Alex Rodriguez.

Shortstop: Joaquin Arias, Rangers. The player to be named in the Rodriguez trade, he's a highly regarded prospect at Class AA.

Third base: Mike Lowell, Marlins. Traded to the Marlins for three career minor league pitchers.

Catcher: Dioner Navarro, Dodgers. Currently at Class AAA, he was sent to the Diamondbacks in the Randy Johnson trade then flipped to the Dodgers for Shawn Green.

Right field: Juan Rivera, Angels. Part of the Vazquez deal.

Center field: Wily Mo Pena, Reds. Traded for third baseman Drew Henson, who now is a quarterback with the NFL's Cowboys.

Left field: Ricky Ledee, Dodgers. Traded to the Indians along with pitchers Jake Westbrook and Zach Day for outfielder David Justice.

Righthanded starter: Westbrook. Part of the Justice deal.

Lefthanded starter: Ted Lilly, Blue Jays. Traded to the A's in a three-team deal in which the Yankees acquired Jeff Weaver and the Tigers wound up with Jeremy Bonderman.

Righthanded reliever: Yhency Brazoban, Dodgers. Included with Weaver in a trade for Kevin Brown.

Lefthanded reliever: Damaso Marte, White Sox. Traded to the Pirates for infielder Enrique Wilson.
