Belcourt's Northwest Corner
This was taken from the corner of Lakeview Ave. and Ledge Rd.

Belcourt's Western Face
Taken as I proceeded up Ledge Rd. from Lakeview Ave.

Belcourt's South Face
This is the ugliest side of Belcourt. You can see that there are roof tiles missing, broken fencing, and debris on the ground.

Note to cellrock: I know the south side is probably a disappointment, but Belcourt has been in various degrees of disrepair for ages. They don't have the same funding available as many of the other mansions, because they're privately owned. That was about as close as I could get without entering onto private property, which I'm not willing to do. By the way, where are you from? And why Belcourt?

The band moved to Seattle a few years ago because of the favorable climate for grunge rock, and they've been quite successful out there.

On Halloween night they were playing a private gig and during a break a fight broke out. Mr. Mike got stabbed. Yeah. He's ok, except a tendon in his wrist was severed and the doctors say he won't be able to play guitar for at least a year. I spoke to his father this morning, and the family is understandably quite upset, although they are very grateful it wasn't worse.

Mr. Mike's mom is a mail carrier in Newport and she's also my sister, making Mr. Mike my nephew. They tried to persuade him to come home to Newport, but he says he needs to stay out there and deal with this.

Mr. Mike is an awesomely rad dude, and would never hurt anyone. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Mussels

When I was a kid we used to harvest mussels at various places. Usually they'd be in rocky areas, stuck to the rocks in clumps. However, the best spot I've ever seen was in Jamestown. It was somewhere along the southeastern shore (the side facing Newport), to the left or south of the ferry landing. The mussels there were in thick beds, and were the largest I've ever seen. Some were easily four inches long.

You don't see mussels so much anymore. The Moorings serves them and theirs are the best around. You get a huge plate of them with the broth they were cooked in, and butter for dipping. They are on the menu as an appetizer (if I remember correctly), but they are a meal in themselves. Perfect with your favorite beer.

Quahogs

Quahogs - not quohogs or cohogs - is the correct spelling for the small clamlike mollusk with the blue/black and white shell Newporters are so fond of and Mark Potenkin loves to deride in his cartoons. Where can they be found? If I told you that, I'd have to kill you.

Oh ok. They can be found buried in the sand under waist-deep waters in such locations as Green Bridge, Price's Neck, Rose Island, Dutch Island, the wrong side of Mackerel Cove, and some of the beaches in Jamestown. How do you harvest them? With an iron clam rake. Are they legal? Yes if they aren't undersized. You used to be able to get a metal ring to tie to your clam rake. If the quahog could fit through the ring, it was too small and had to be thrown back.

Anyone else know any good places? How but some quahog stories?

The Ships in the Harbor

Wow! Did anyone see the cruise ship that was all lit up leaving the harbor tonight around 6:00? It was quite stunning, and I just happened to be coming over the Newport Bridge when it was leaving. That's the second night in a row that a cruise ship was leaving the harbor when I was going over the bridge at just about 6:00 p.m.

What's going on with Newport's fall foliage? We seem to be green. But as soon as you leave Aquidneck Island, the colors are beautiful. On my way to work, up route I-295, it was gorgeous. On the way back everything was ugly because I was stuck in traffic and looking at the world through mud-colored glasses.

Well it was an eventful day in more than one way. One good, one bad. I was on Route 4 North today around 3:00pm going to my job interview and suddenly traffic got all backed up. There was a fatal accident around Wickford. By the time I got there they didn't even have the dead guy off the median. There was a blanket over him, and his feet were sticking out.

I watched Channel 10 News at 6:00pm when I got home, and they had a very short piece about it. Someone had stopped to help someone else who was broken down, and got hit in the high speed lane. Ouch. It kind of gave me a somber outlook for the rest of the day.

Even so, I got hired at Parent Support Network in Johnston (I know, it's a bit of a hike), but it sounds like a great job, and the pay is good.

I hope others will joing up and post stuff in this community. I can hear my own voice echoing off the walls in here. If you're just joining, welcome!
