I have been having some strange thoughts lately.

As you know, local governments in Japan each have their own rules regarding things like garbage bags. In some cities, residents are required to use designated paid garbage bags, while in others, there is no such requirement.

In my opinion, the former group tends to have higher environmental awareness.

When people have to pay for garbage bags, many start thinking about how to reduce their trash. They might question, "Do I really need this?" before buying something, because buying more things leads to disposing of more and using more paid bags. People may choose higher quality items that last longer, or prefer products in less bulky or recyclable packaging.

Many supermarkets collect food packaging for recycling.

When buying food, it is difficult to avoid using some kind of container. Although some shops allow customers to bring their own containers, this is not common.

In Japan, there is an astonishing amount of single-use packaging.

Some people wash and dry these containers after use and then bring them to supermarkets to place in recycling bins for packaging materials. The rate of participation in recycling is assumed to be higher in areas where customers pay for bags, but overall, the percentage of people who actually use these recycling options is not very high.

In addition, there is a limit on containers, and many types cannot be accepted, such as those used for natto, probably because it is difficult to remove the slipperiness and odor.

I have been thinking about how to improve the recycling rate lately. I thought if people could receive money or points, they would be more willing to participate in recycling.

I think if there were a machine set up at game centers, it could be fun. For example, people could deposit 100 yen along with their card, like a transportation card or something similar. Then, they could place their washed and dried containers into the machine and press a button. The machine would decide whether they win or lose.

If they win, they earn points and get their 100 yen back; if they lose, they lose their deposit. The machine would also explain why they lost and how they can win next time.

Many people enjoy trying to win stuffed toys at game centers, but I think it might be a good option for some people to enjoy earning points by participating in recycling.

I think this is an idea that many people might have.

ここまで書いた後で検索してみたら、知らなかったんですけど、リサイクルでポイントがもらえる試みは結構前からされているようですね。

個人的には、個人情報をいろんなところに書くのが好きではないのでポイントカードを作ることはあまり無いのだけど、持っている方は大いに活用できそうですね。
