I bought a book, and the author used to be my friend.

[English version below]

"What…?"
I’m not even sure whether it actually came out as a voice, but some kind of sound escaped me.

While I was back in Japan, I wanted to buy a book, any book at all, and there was a book with a title that caught my eye.
“Ah, I think I’m going to like this one,” I thought as I picked it up. After coming back to the Netherlands, I finally made steady progress through my growing stack of unread books, and at last it was this book’s turn.

I wondered who the author was. As I looked at the author's profile in the back, a familiar social media username caught my eye.

I was shocked and confused. Because this person had been a friend of mine in university. And more importantly, we are no longer friends.

It wasn’t that we had a dramatic falling-out. But in my second year of university, something this person did left me with a lingering heaviness in my heart. To me, it felt like a kind of betrayal. I had trusted this person. I believed we were friends. Those feelings kept circling in my mind, and I was the one who chose to distance myself.

After that, I never tried to confirm what had really happened. We simply stopped talking and went on different paths. And now, after all this time and by a strange turn of fate, their book has found its way into my hands.

I couldn’t feel happy about it. How mean am I?

We’re complete strangers now. This person probably doesn’t even remember what happened back then. They might not even remember me. I truly think it’s wonderful, even admirable, that they have the talent to publish a book and have found success. And yet, on the other hand, I still haven’t freed myself from the shock of what I felt was betrayal at the time.

Even though I was the one who chose to walk away, I haven’t grown at all. I haven’t been able to let it go or move forward.

And still, their writing is beautiful. The title of this book pierces deeply into my heart. I feel both happy and frustrated, well, something like that.

We will probably never meet again. And I don’t know whether I’ll ever be able to forget what happened back then.

Even so, the words you choose are beautiful.
