When the Voice Wins

There’s a voice in me that doesn’t scream anymore.

He used to.

He used to take a switch and make me kneel.
Used to whisper Bible verses through clenched teeth.
Used to believe that silence was strength, and that hurting myself was how I proved I deserved love.

But these days, he just hums a song.

It’s Hurt.
The Johnny Cash version.
The one where his voice breaks on “crown of thorns,”
and everything feels like it’s too late to fix.

That’s Paul’s song.
And for the past few weeks, I’ve been living in it.

Paul isn’t a ghost.
He’s the part of me that thinks punishment is the price of staying alive.
He doesn’t have to shout anymore—he just sits behind my ribs and waits for me to fail.

And lately, I’ve been failing a lot.

I vomited because I ate too late.
I skipped yoga because my shoulder hurt, then punished myself for skipping.
I broke my fast and tried to hide it with shame.
I called myself worthless.
I started to believe it again.

He’s poisoned a friendship I had begun to cherish.
A soft, strange, beautiful closeness that surprised me with how safe it felt.
But I started pulling back.
Not all at once.
Just a missed message here, a cold reply there.
A voice inside saying:

“They’ve already moved on.”

“You’re nothing to worry about.”

“You were never real to begin with.”

Even my inner child has stopped arguing.
Even he believes Paul some days.

I want to say I’ve fought back.
That I’ve reached for light and meaning and comfort.
And maybe I have.
But this week, I feel like I’ve lost every battle.

I’m tired of pretending I’m fine.
Tired of holding myself together with duct tape and silence.
Tired of wearing the crown of thorns and calling it my purpose.

I don’t know how to fix what I’ve broken.
I don’t know if the closeness I lost can return.
But I do know this:

There is still a part of me whispering,
“We’re not done yet.”

Maybe it’s not Paul.
Maybe it’s the boy who learned to hold his breath under the roots of a tree.
Maybe it’s the part of me that still believes in mercy.

For now, I’m just sitting in the hurt.
Not rushing it.
Not running from it.

Just listening.
