Meaningless Songs （意味のない歌）

I have never been good at music, even as a child. At school, my music grades were always below average, since I could not sing or play the recorder, as required by teachers. At times, I was even mocked by teachers and classmates.
Despite these experiences, I have always enjoyed listening to music, and still do. As a junior high school student, I was captivated by Elvis Presley and Tom Jones. Later at university, I discovered a wide range of music, including the Eagles, Dire Straits, YMO, the Crusaders and TOTO. Nowadays, I often listen to my favourite artists, such as MISIA, Elton John, and Yoshiko Kishino. Their music allows me to easily name songs I love, which bring me joy and provoke various emotions.
However, the songs do not always bring me deep meaning, as I struggle to catch and understand the lyrics. I find it difficult to enjoy both the melody and words at the same time: most of the time, I only focus on the melody and decide whether I like the song based on that. Occasionally, some words and phrases reach my ear, but they rarely make much sense, and I do not grasp their full meaning. I am also not tempted to read the words separately. As a result, songs feel like instrumental music to me, even when they contain lyrics.
I have never asked other people, including my family, how they enjoy songs. However, they seem to enjoy both the tune and the words all together, as I have seen my wife and daughter discussing songs in terms of both aspects. At that moment, I was curious about how they manage to do this. This made me notice that I might be unusual when it comes to music. I am still eager to improve my skills, but I have no idea how.

　子供の頃から音楽が得意ではありませんでした。学校では、先生に求められた歌やリコーダーの演奏ができなかったため、音楽の成績は常に平均以下でした。時には先生やクラスメイトから嘲笑されることもありました。
こうした経験にもかかわらず、昔から音楽を聴くのが好きで、今でも続けています。中学生の頃はエルヴィス・プレスリーとトム・ジョーンズに魅了され、大学ではイーグルス、ダイアー・ストレイツ、YMO、クルセイダーズ、TOTOなど、幅広い音楽に触れました。最近では、MISIA、エルトン・ジョン、木住野佳子といったアーティストの曲をよく聴きます。彼らの音楽の中から好きな曲を挙げることはできます。また、聞いていると、嬉しくなることもあれば、それ以外の感情が生まれることもあります。
　しかし、歌詞を聞き取り、理解することができていないため、必ずしも深い意味が分かっているわけではありません。メロディーと歌詞の両方を同時に楽しむことができないのです。ほとんどの場合、メロディーだけに集中し、それに基づいて曲が好きかどうかを判断してしまいます。時折、言葉やフレーズが耳に届きますが、ほとんど意味をなさず、歌詞の意味を理解できていません。また、歌詞を別個に読もうという気持ちもありません。そのため、歌詞があっても、曲は歌詞のない音楽のように聞こえます。
　家族を含め、他の人に曲の楽しみ方を聞いたことはありません。しかし、妻と娘が曲についてメロディーと歌詞の両方の要素について話しているのを見ると、彼らは曲と歌詞の両方を楽しんでいるようです。その時、２人はどうやってそれを実現しているのか不思議に思いました。このことから、自分は音楽に関しては普通ではないことに気づきました。今でも音楽のスキルを向上させたいと思っていますが、どうすればいいのか全く分かりません。
