What I Saw Beyond the Early Start – Part One
An early start is not always what matters.
This is something I realized only after my daughter grew a little older.
But as parents, we often want our children to have an early start. I was the same.
We compare children over small things, and feel proud if ours is a little faster.
I feel this happens most strongly in the baby years.

I, too, was desperate when I was a new mom.
I talked to her even before she was born, taught baby signs, tried diaper-free parenting with cloth diapers, and insisted on exclusive breastfeeding.
Looking back, my parenting was full of rigid ideas.

When my daughter was born, I was living in Kanto region, with no friends or family around.
My husband stayed in his office, and I barely saw him.
With no one to talk to, I even acted out lines for my two cats and my baby daughter who could not yet speak.
Maybe because of this, my daughter began speaking very early.
At daycare, the teachers praised her as “the best talker,” and I was so proud.
But before she entered elementary school, she suddenly developed a stutter.
People say it isn’t the parents’ fault, but I still can’t help blaming myself for pouring words on her like a shower when she was so small.
