The Frozen Puddle

The puddle has frozen over.
On the morning of the first snow, a flat, glassy ring of water appeared before my house. It is dusted with a delicate frost, etched with swirling, crystalline patterns.
When my small foot presses down, it shatters with a crisp snap.
Snap. Snap. Snap, snap, snap...
The delightful, brittle sensation travelling up through my sole is purely enchanting.
I started at the centre, crushed the ice from edge to edge, and then, suddenly overcome by a hollow, lingering emptiness, I slumped down onto the ground.
"Meow." The black cat we keep at home nuzzled against me.
"I'm not a bad girl, I tell you!"
I pulled the black cat into a fierce embrace.
I felt my face crumple instantly. The tears began to spill.
The cat’s tongue, raspy and warm, licked my face with a tender grace.

My little human has not returned.
The snow has only just fallen, and it is bitterly, piercingly cold today.
I am the black cat who lives in this house, and I have lost count of how many times I have lulled this crying infant to sleep. I am her sister, after all.
This morning, my little human was scolded by her father and mother.
Pouting, she bolted out of the house—and she hasn't returned for quite some time now...
Overcome with worry, I tried to step outside to find her, but the freezing air rushed in with a sharp, chilling whoosh.
Oh, it is freezing.
She was playing there, shattering the frozen puddle before the house.
Happily crunching the ice, yet her face looked as though she might break into tears at any moment.
With a determined heave, I stepped out.
The biting cold of the earth seeped into my paw pads, chilling me to the bone.
To me, the moralities of humans matter little.
But you see, my human looked so terribly sad.
As I expected, the moment she hugged me, she began to wail, waaaah, waaaah. Yes, yes, I know, it was so very sad, wasn't it?
Yes... but... It’s cold! It’s freezing!
Hurry, get back inside the warm house!
And then, cat treats! Bring me the cat treats at once!

[Afterword]
This piece was intended to be an homage to "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen.
First, I must offer an apology: I am told that on days cold enough to freeze a puddle, cats rarely choose to venture outside of their own accord. As for snowy days, it seems to depend on the cat.
Therefore, the black cat in this story is a creature of pure fantasy. I wrote this simply because I could not resist the imagery that blossomed in my mind.
Perhaps that is why I was soundly scolded by the "senior cat" in our household—the one who "stars" in this story—who struck me across the face with her tail in disapproval, compelling me to write from the perspective of the black cat as well.
"I was freezing, you know!" she scolded me.
I do hope that, once they returned to the warmth of the house, they enjoyed a delicious serving of cat treats.
Well, as you know, cats are quite sensitive to the cold.
In the snowy regions, it is almost a custom to check under one's car for cats before driving off in the winter.
There are various theories as to why—perhaps to avoid blizzards and strong winds, because the residual heat from the engine is warm, or because the ground is frozen and it’s slightly more comfortable beneath the chassis—but I feel like they are often there during the winter. Not that they aren't around in other seasons, of course.
Many people used to make a habit of peering under their cars or giving the hood a gentle tap to make a sound before starting the engine, but as the sight of stray cats has become rarer, this scene, too, may be fading away.
Furthermore, even in the same parking lot, I have the distinct impression that some cars are mysteriously favoured by cats, while others are simply ignored.
The feline criteria for a good car remain a total mystery, don't they?
