『竹の えん（Take no En）』橋口博幸 Hiroyuki Hashiguchi（2021.3）

私は竹文化研究家・愛竹家と自称している竹好きの人間だ。具体的には、竹でオブジェや遊具をつくったり、竹炭を焼いたり、竹の民具について調べたり、竹の演出を手伝ったり、竹に関する人々を訪ねたりしている。2007年に「竹」に出会って以来、竹の縁に生かされてきた。

I call myself a bamboo culture researcher and aikochiku—a self-proclaimed bamboo enthusiast. In practice, I make bamboo sculptures and play structures, fire bamboo charcoal, study bamboo folk crafts, help with bamboo-themed productions, and seek out people whose lives are intertwined with bamboo. Ever since my encounter with bamboo in 2007, I have been sustained by the connections it has brought me.

本書では、これまでに出会った竹の縁の数々を短いエッセイで紹介していく。本書に登場する人や場所、会社などはそれぞれが関係し合っており、まさにフランスの哲学者ドゥールズとガタリが提唱した中心を持たないシステム「リゾーム」のよう。日本で一般的なモウソウチクやマダケは地下茎が縦横に張り巡らされ、自身のクローンを生成し増殖していくというが、竹にいただいたご縁もまた、複雑なネットワークを構築しているのだ。本書を通して竹の世界の多様性に触れられたら幸いだ。

In this book, I introduce, through a series of short essays, the many connections bamboo has brought into my life. The people, places, and organizations that appear in these pages are all interrelated—much like the "rhizome," the centerless, decentralized system proposed by French philosophers Deleuze and Guattari. Moso bamboo and Madake, the most common species in Japan, spread horizontally through underground rhizomes, generating their own clones and multiplying. The connections I have received through bamboo form a similarly complex network. I hope this book offers a glimpse into the rich diversity of the world of bamboo.

なお、本書は2021年3月6〜28日に開催された橋口博幸『竹のえん』展において展示販売したエッセイ集である。

This book is a collection of essays originally produced for and sold at the exhibition "Take no En" (Connections Through Bamboo) by Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, held from March 6 to 28, 2021.
