The End of Summer Gently Slows the Pace of Our Steps

There is something curious about late August. The air in the morning already carries a faint trace of autumn, and yet the noon light still looks unmistakably like summer. The calendar says shosho, the season when the heat begins to soften, but the body and the heart take a little longer to follow. I find myself loving those few in-between days every year.

Autumn Arrives First in the Morning and Evening

The sound of a wind chime still belongs here, and yet if I listen carefully, I can sense another season beyond it. On the walk home under a fierce sun, only the occasional breeze feels kind. Late August is not a moment when summer suddenly ends. It is a time when the outline of summer slowly starts to loosen. That uncertainty feels more honest than any clear-cut change.

The Small Richness of Not Rushing

Recently, I came across the news that from next month, the legal speed limit on residential roads in Japan will be lowered to 30 kilometers per hour. I thought it was a way of choosing safe living over simple speed. Seasonal change feels a little like that too. Between summer and autumn, perhaps it is better not to switch too sharply, but to loosen our stride instead. Looking up at the sky while waiting for a light, noticing the smell of evening air—these are things we only catch at that gentler speed.

Instant Comfort and Quiet Space

Today is also Instant Ramen Day, apparently. I cannot count how many busy days have been helped by a bowl that only needed hot water. It is also the day said to mark the origin of senryu, those short, everyday poems that catch human truth in a few lines. Speed and brevity are not the same as carelessness. There are things that fill us quickly, and things that remain in us quietly. Both, in their own way, support an ordinary life with tenderness.

The Season Changes Without Making a Sound

Summer plans begin to end one by one, and the colors in shop windows and the height of the sky shift almost imperceptibly. We still reach for cold drinks, while already thinking about warm tea. In that ambiguity, I feel there is no need to hurry ourselves into the next season. Today, I want to go home just a little more slowly. Slowly enough to leave one short sentence in a notebook. At the end of summer, that may be exactly the right speed.
