(English follows)

For fulfilling life〜Comparison(2)
Escaping suffering
As mentioned earlier, having a rival or an ideal version of ourselves can sometimes work in a positive way.
At the same time, when we compare our current selves with a rival or with the person we wish to become, we may react defensively — feeling discouraged by the gap and pulling away. Or, in some cases, we may turn that gap inward and start blaming ourselves, thinking we are not good enough.
The first reaction is, in a sense, safer because it protects the self. But it can also narrow our network and limit the range of activities we engage in.
The second reaction, where we keep criticizing ourselves, can be more harmful and may even lead to a dangerous emotional state.
This tendency to interpret the gap negatively is like a thinking habit. And because it’s a habit, it can be adjusted — and perhaps it’s better for us if we do.
