Criticism of Sanae Takaichi and Escalating Confrontation

A man reportedly appeared at a demonstration in Shibuya on July 19 saying things like:

“I’m going around punching people who criticize Sanae Takaichi. Is it okay if I punch you?”

and

“I’ve been beating up people who say ‘Takaichi should resign.’ Is it okay if I punch you?”

(Sanae Takaichi is a Japanese politician.)

Who was this man?

Was he a supporter of Sanae Takaichi?
Was he actually against her?
Or was he simply someone looking for an excuse to vent his own anger, regardless of politics?

No matter which is true, his behavior is unacceptable.

Asking someone’s permission does not make it acceptable to hit them.

This is how people provoke one another, stir up anger, deepen divisions, and conflicts begin.

In fact, you could argue that conflict has already begun. Perhaps what is changing is that it is becoming more visible.

If we react exactly as provocateurs want us to, we are playing into their hands.

That is why it is important to stay calm.

Why should we have to spend our energy thinking about how to respond?

It is unfair, but we should not let ourselves be manipulated.

Do not take the bait.

Even if you feel angry, please stay calm.

I also saw reports of a man deliberately bumping into people participating in a demonstration in Osaka.

I fear we may see more incidents involving people acting recklessly or aggressively like this.

If you encounter someone behaving this way, it may help to preserve evidence, such as photos or videos.

Sometimes, having evidence can make a difference.

Even if you feel angry, please remain calm.

Stay safe.
