5年ぶりの開催となる「葛尾三匹獅子舞」奉舞参加をきっかけに、文化人類学者の一柳智子氏による調査報告書を軸に、祭典についての調査、関係者へのインタビューを行い、休校中の中学校の一室を架空の美術準備室として、架空の先生が調べた、数多の情報に埋め尽くされる架空の部屋を制作しました。
葛尾村の獅子舞の記録や思い出、全国の獅子舞の広がり、その膨大な情報に触れる中で、真実の曖昧さに触れ、様々に語られ、現れる情報が繋がる点も見えるのに、あと一歩掴めない。きっとあの日見た舞が真実の全てで、その時代、その人それぞれに真実があります。ものをつくるということは、知り得たこと、見たこと、考えることを真実として具現化していく実験の過程なのだと感じています。
The first performance in five years of the Katsurao Sanbiki Shishimai lion dance inspired me to research the festival and interview the people involved, using the research of cultural anthropologist Tomoko Ichiyanagi as a basis. I then created a fictional art preparation room, filling a classroom at the now closed junior high school with a wealth of information amassed through the research of a fictional teacher.
The vast quantity of sources I encountered, from records and recollections of Katsurao's lion dance to sources on the spread of lion dances throughout Japan, brought me face to face with the ambiguity of truth. I could see but not quite grasp how the various pieces connected with one another. The dance that I saw was the whole truth, but there is a different truth for every person and every time. To me, "creating" is an experiment in which what one learns, sees, and thinks materializes as truth.
