History of Socially Engaged Science Fiction: Part 2 - Periodization in the History of Socially Engaged Science Fiction

■ Overview

The periodization of socially engaged science fiction is designed to trace when and toward what kinds of social questions the imagination surrounding science and technology has shifted.

This study establishes ten periods, from the Prehistory of Imagined Societies Period to the AI-Era Reconfiguration of Conceptions of the Human Period. It emphasizes not only the publication sequence of works, but also shifts in the focus of social criticism, the ethics of technology, freedom, justice, domination, and conceptions of the human.

■ 1. The Prehistory of Imagined Societies Period

The Prehistory of Imagined Societies Period covers the years before science fiction became established as an independent genre, when the form of criticizing existing society through the premise of an alternative society took shape. This category therefore includes works now classified as fantasy literature, utopian literature, satirical travel narratives, and proto-science fiction.

Thomas More’s "Utopia," Tommaso Campanella’s "The City of the Sun," Francis Bacon’s "New Atlantis," Margaret Cavendish’s "The Blazing World," and the Laputa episode of Jonathan Swift’s "Gulliver’s Travels," among others, placed existing society in perspective through ideal states, institutions of scientific research, other worlds, and satirical travel narratives.

What distinguishes this period is not modern science and technology themselves, but the establishment of a form based on the proposition that “if social conditions different from those of reality are posited, human society can be conceived otherwise.”

Where the later Industrial Scientific Romance Period addresses concrete anxieties about machines and the life sciences, this period takes the design of governance, religion, education, and communal life as its subject.

What matters here, therefore, is not the degree to which these works were fully realized as technological science fiction. Their significance lies in establishing the foundation of the science-fictional imagination that followed, as a prehistory of social criticism through imagined societies.

■ 2. The Industrial Scientific Romance Period

The Industrial Scientific Romance Period extends from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth century, when the Industrial Revolution, the steam engine, electricity, anatomy, chemistry, evolutionary theory, and urbanization entered the literary imagination.

Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein" uses artificial life to question the responsibility of creators and the boundaries of the human, while Samuel Butler’s "Erewhon" offered an early expression of anxiety that machines might evolve and come to dominate human beings.

H. G. Wells’s "The Island of Doctor Moreau" and "The Invisible Man," along with Jules Verne’s "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," also portray science and technology as sources both of wonder and of transgression.

Here, science and technology shift from abstract materials for designing social institutions to concrete devices that transform body, life, movement, responsibility, and violence.

Where the imagined societies of the preceding period emphasized the design of alternative societies, technology itself destabilizes conceptions of the human and social order in this period. During the subsequent Future-Society Critique Period, this technological imagination expands into social criticism of capitalism, labor, cities, and class.

■ 3. The Future-Society Critique Period

The Future-Society Critique Period extends from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, when visions of future societies were used to criticize capitalism, labor, class, cities, and gender roles.

Edward Bellamy’s "Looking Backward" turns distribution and state administration into a thought experiment, while William Morris’s "News from Nowhere" reimagines labor, nature, community, and handicraft in opposition to industrial capitalism.

In H. G. Wells’s "When the Sleeper Wakes," the future is not a setting for adventure, but a device for observing the consequences of class division and the concentration of capital.

Moving beyond stories of invention and scientific wonders, science fiction begins to function powerfully as a thought experiment in alternative arrangements of social institutions. During this period, the technological anxieties of the Industrial Scientific Romance Period become connected to labor alienation, social stratification, urban control, and gender order.

During the subsequent Emergence of Dystopia Period, this critique of future society converges on concrete fears of frameworks that deprive people of freedom.

■ 4. The Emergence of Dystopia Period

The Emergence of Dystopia Period covers the first half of the twentieth century, when totalitarianism, bureaucracy, mass propaganda, eugenics, surveillance, planned economies, and managed consumption became established as central concerns of science fiction.

Karel Čapek’s "R.U.R." depicts artificial life-forms created as robot laborers and the collapse of human society, while Fritz Lang’s "Metropolis" renders the machine city and class division visible through film.

Yevgeny Zamyatin’s "We," Aldous Huxley’s "Brave New World," George Orwell’s "Nineteen Eighty-Four," and Ray Bradbury’s "Fahrenheit 451" reveal structures through which the state, language, pleasure, surveillance, memory manipulation, and comfortable indifference deprive people of freedom.

During this period, the future changes from a promise of bright progress into the possibility that freedom will be structurally taken away. Where the preceding period’s critique of future society included comparisons among institutional designs, the state, city, education, propaganda, language, and psychological manipulation become central devices of domination in this period.

During the subsequent Cold War Technology and Ethics Period, these questions of domination become connected to nuclear weapons, military bureaucracy, computers, and the responsibility of scientists.

■ 5. The Cold War Technology and Ethics Period

The Cold War Technology and Ethics Period extends from the end of the Second World War through the 1960s, when nuclear weapons, space development, computers, cybernetics, the military-industrial complex, and radiation became major themes in science fiction.

Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth’s "The Space Merchants" depicts the management of desire by advertising corporations and consumer society, while Kurt Vonnegut’s "Player Piano" addresses the hollowing out of labor through automation.

Walter M. Miller Jr.’s "A Canticle for Leibowitz" and Kurt Vonnegut’s "Cat’s Cradle" problematize the memory of technology, research ethics, and the recurrence of catastrophe.

Science and technology are understood not as inventions external to society, but as directly connected to human extinction, rationalized violence, regimented societies, and professional responsibility. Under the Cold War, the state-centered domination characteristic of the Emergence of Dystopia Period expands to encompass nuclear strategy, military bureaucracy, automated retaliation systems, advertising corporations, and consumer society.

During the subsequent Inward Turn Period, these questions of technology and structure move inward, toward consciousness, language, the body, sexuality, and perception.

■ 6. The Inward Turn Period

The Inward Turn Period encompasses the rise of New Wave science fiction, psychological science fiction, science fiction concerned with language and gender, critiques of psychiatry, and media criticism. It took shape during the 1960s and 1970s and continued to shape later works.

Anthony Burgess’s "A Clockwork Orange" questions the relationship between therapeutic technology and free will, while Philip K. Dick’s "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" destabilizes standards of humanness through empathy, memory, the body, and consumption.

Joanna Russ’s "The Female Man," Marge Piercy’s "Woman on the Edge of Time," "Neon Genesis Evangelion," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," and Satoshi Kon’s "Paprika" connect gender, psychiatric care, memory, dreams, trauma, and the boundaries between self and other.

The focus of science fiction shifts from outer space and large-scale technologies to consciousness, memory, sex, language, the body, perception, and social roles. Where the Cold War Technology and Ethics Period questioned social frameworks and technological systems running out of control, this period problematizes how the subject itself is constituted through norms and language.

During the subsequent Domination by Information Capital Period, these internalized questions are carried forward into forms of domination operating through networks, data, corporate power, and virtual spaces.

■ 7. The Domination by Information Capital Period

The Domination by Information Capital Period centers on the years from the 1980s through the 2000s and continues to resonate and expand into the early 2010s. Cyberpunk, corporate states, networks, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, body modification, urban underclasses, surveillance, and data domination become its central concerns.

William Gibson’s "Neuromancer" links cyberspace, corporate power, AI, and body modification, while Ridley Scott’s "Blade Runner" questions the boundary between human beings and commodified bodies through memory, lifespan, and emotion.

"Ghost in the Shell," "The Matrix," "Minority Report," "Den-noh Coil," and "Inception" take as their subject the point at which body, perception, augmented reality, and prediction become objects of control by information technology.

Alongside the state, corporations, media, and information networks appear as agents of domination, while freedom is treated as a question of data, body, access rights, and identity.

Where the Inward Turn Period questioned the constructed nature of consciousness and language, in this period that construction is externalized as the institutions of network capitalism.

During the subsequent Reconfiguration of Plural Conceptions of Justice Period, these questions about structures of domination expand into a question of justice: whose futures are told?

■ 8. The Reconfiguration of Plural Conceptions of Justice Period

The Reconfiguration of Plural Conceptions of Justice Period has precursors dating from the mid-1980s and became central from the 1990s through the 2010s, as gender, race, colonialism, disability, care, migration, the environment, memory, community, and non-Western visions of the future moved to the center of science fiction.

Margaret Atwood’s "The Handmaid’s Tale" depicts the management of women’s bodies and reproduction by the state, while Nancy Kress’s "Beggars in Spain" and Andrew Niccol’s "Gattaca" address differences in ability, genes, distribution, and opportunity.

Kazuo Ishiguro’s "Never Let Me Go" and Project Itoh’s "Harmony" reveal structures through which care, health, and bodily management oppress individuals in the name of justice and the common good.

Science fiction expands beyond a single history of technological progress into a form that asks whose futures are told, who is excluded, and who is recognized as human or as a citizen. Where the Domination by Information Capital Period emphasized corporate and data domination, the body, language, history, land, environment, and cultural recognition become matters of justice in this period.

During the subsequent Climate and Planetary Crisis Period, these questions of justice expand into the global environment, resource distribution, and intergenerational responsibility.

■ 9. The Climate and Planetary Crisis Period

The Climate and Planetary Crisis Period dates from the 2000s, when climate change, resource depletion, pandemics, food, water, urban disasters, refugees, and environmental collapse became important themes in science fiction.

Octavia E. Butler’s "Parable of the Sower" connects climate collapse to corporate cities, religious communities, and migration, while Margaret Atwood’s "Oryx and Crake" and Paolo Bacigalupi’s "The Windup Girl" address life, food, corporate domination, and environmental collapse.

N. K. Jemisin’s "The Fifth Season" and Kim Stanley Robinson’s "The Ministry for the Future" turn discrimination, finance, violence, and intergenerational responsibility in disaster-stricken societies into extended thought experiments.

The future changes from a site of technological expansion into one for asking who will survive, who will be sacrificed, and who will distribute resources within a devastated global environment.

The questions of justice raised during the Reconfiguration of Plural Conceptions of Justice Period take concrete form in this period as questions of water, food, housing, climate engineering, environmental risk, and responsibility toward future generations.

During the subsequent AI-Era Reconfiguration of Conceptions of the Human Period, the boundary between human and machine is itself redefined in parallel with environmental crisis.

■ 10. The AI-Era Reconfiguration of Conceptions of the Human Period

The AI-Era Reconfiguration of Conceptions of the Human Period dates from the 2010s, when generative AI, machine learning, robots, synthetic media, brain–machine interfaces, data-based personalities, and platform governance became central concerns of science fiction.

Ted Chiang’s “The Lifecycle of Software Objects” addresses raising artificial intelligences and recognizing their personhood, while "Psycho-Pass" depicts a society in which the quantification of psychological states and a governance system not easily reducible to simple machine AI become the basis of public security and judicial decisions.

Spike Jonze’s "Her," the "Black Mirror" episode “Be Right Back,” Kazuo Ishiguro’s "Klara and the Sun," and Kogonada’s "After Yang" reconfigure conceptions of the human through intimacy, data-based personalities, replaceability, memory, and forms of family life.

AI is no longer merely a tool or a rebellious machine, but a subject through which human societies ask what they recognize as human, which judgments they delegate to machines, and how they distribute personhood and responsibility.

Where the Climate and Planetary Crisis Period asks about the conditions of survival and environmental distribution, this period reexamines the boundaries of creativity, labor, emotion, memory, responsibility, and personal identity.

Here, the history of socially engaged science fiction enters a stage that most directly connects the ethics of technology with the ontology of the human.

■ Conclusion

The advantage of this periodization is that it does not confine science fiction to a chronological sequence of works, but allows it to be read as a history of changes in what societies have reexamined through technology.

Establishing a progression from imagined societies, industrial technology, future-society critique, dystopia, Cold War ethics, the inner world, information capital, plural conceptions of justice, climate crisis, and AI-driven conceptions of the human makes it easier to compare the position of each case.

This periodization also connects directly to the overview of each period and the readings of individual cases that follow. It is not a fixed chronological table, but a working unit for comparing the five perspectives within each period.
