セッション定番曲その267：My Way
（ジャズ）ボーカル・セッションの定番曲。カバーも多いです。歌の上手さを発揮出来る曲でもありますが、「説教オヤジ臭い曲」の代名詞のようになって敬遠されてもいます・・・
和訳したものはあちこちのWebサイトに掲載されているので、ここではポイントだけ説明します。
ポイント1：Frank Sinatra
1969年録音。ロック全盛期に向かう時代、その波に飲み込まれてすっかり「旧世代の遺物」のような扱いになってラスベガスのショーで裕福な金持ち相手に歌うヒトになっていたシナトラですが、1940年代デビュー時の「アイドル」的な立場から1950年代末には「ラットパック」と呼ばれる「悪ガキのまま大人になったイケオジ集団」にイメージを変えなら活躍していました。オリジナルの映画「Ocean's Eleven」は彼らの作品です。これを歌った頃は54歳で、現在の感覚からするとまだ「年寄り」扱いされるような年齢ではありませんが、当時のロック世代から見ると「化石」みたいに見えたのでしょうね。
The Whoの「My Generation」による「俺たちの世代」宣言に対する「My Way（こうやってオレたちは生きてきたんだ）」というオヤジの「My Generation」宣言のような曲と考えると面白いですね。
シナトラのようにねっとりと陶酔して歌うと「回顧録」の印象が強くなって、前向きな歌には聞こえず、それが「オヤジ臭い」「演歌かよ」と揶揄される要因にもなっていますが、歌い方によっては「ここまでの人生を一旦振り返って、自分の生き方が間違えていないことを確認して、ここからさらに力強く生きていく」宣言として表現することも可能だと思います。
ポイント2：元ネタ
Comme D'habitude by Claude Francois
印象に残るメロディの曲は実はヨーロッパ発祥のことが多いです。Paul Ankaがフランス滞在中にこの曲を耳にして、なんとか英語圏で作品化したいとして交渉して、英語の歌詞を書いて、それをFrank Sinatraに提供しました。Paul Anka自身もヒット曲が途切れていた時期だと思いますが、彼自身はまだ20代で、これを自分が歌うより上の世代の歌手に提供した方が良いと判断。
原曲はフランス語特有の粘っこい発音／発声もあってより演歌っぽく聞こえますね。歌詞の内容は「My Way」とは全然違っていて「日常生活（Comme D'habitude）の中での恋の終わりを感じる」場面を歌っています。
ポイント3：Elvis Presley
圧倒的な歌唱力と説得力。「ロックの王様」という称号は既に過去のもので、他人のヒット曲のカバーをラスベガスのステージで歌う「非ロック的な存在」になっていたエルヴィス。1973年にはまだ38歳でしたが、「これまでの人生を振り返る」曲が「ここからさらに」には聞こえないですね。それよりも得意としていた「ゴスペル」的な匂いを感じます。
ポイント4：Sid Vicious
1970年代後半にはThe Whoの「My Generation」すら「過去のもの」にしてしまう勢いのあったPunk Rock。音楽的才能が皆無だったSid Viciousが投げやりに歌うこのバージョンは当然「皮肉」のつもりだったはずですが、短い生涯に終わった彼がまさに「人生の終盤」に「俺はこれしか出来ないんだ」と遺言を歌ったものになりました。刹那的な精神性を吐き出すテーマソングとしての新たな位置付けも。

ポイント5：歌詞のポイント
And now, the end is near

この冒頭部がまさに「説教オヤジ臭い」原因。
「人生のステージの終幕が近づいている」と。
ここでの「My friend」は自分と同世代の人達に呼びかけている印象。

「あちこちを旅したけど、自分の生き方は間違えていなかったと言える」という自信たっぷりの宣言。ここがまだまだ迷いを抱えて生きている若い世代にウケないところ。「勝手に老いぼれていろ」と反発されてしまう。
Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption
「少しは後悔もあるけど、わざわざ言うほどのこともない」
「困難に直面しても逃げずに立ち向かったよ」
とここでも自信たっぷりです。
I planned each charted course

I did it my way
「堅実な人生設計」「自分なりの判断への自信」をここでも歌っています。
なんでこんなことをわざわざ大きな声で歌う必要があるのか、疑問しか感じません。自分の胸のうちにしまっておけばいいのに、と思ってしまいます。歌い終わったら、自信たっぷりに「若い世代」に対して説教を始めるんだろうなぁ・・・。いかにも「内面は未成熟なまま力を付けて世界を席巻した米国」的価値観を体現している気もします。実はシナトラ自身も当初は「こんな人生観はどうなんだ？」という疑問を持っていたようですが、ヒットした後は自分のステージの大事なレパートリーになっていました。
さて、これをどうやったら「説教臭くない」「今後の人生に向けた前向きな歌」として聴かせることが出来るのか・・・。やっぱり「陶酔しないこと」が大事だと思います。自信たっぷりに見せながら、実は心の弱さを裏に秘めていることをちゃんと表現する。表面的な歌詞の内容とは矛盾することを歌にこめる、と。難しいですね・・・
ポイント6：曲の構成
ゆったりとしたバラード。「2-5-1」や「2-5-4-1」「サブドミナントマイナー」などを意図的に組み込んだ構成になっています。
